Cranberry cotoneaster winter berries

It was not the first time it happened to me that I found a cool looking plant, and I thought it was not the most common one. I shot it from every angle because, you know... it's unusual; probably nobody knows it (🙄) and it will be a great addition to the pile of other plant photos.

Then I googled it, found the name, and saw more photos...
and like with a magic wand, I started to see it everywhere! Does that happen to you too?
The things we know are easier to spot, I guess :p

Cranberry cotoneaster

(Cotoneaster apiculatus)

The one I shot is a small plant, and I think it struggles a bit in the spot it is planted in. But every year, it has lots of tiny, vivid red berries to show. In spring, it blooms with tiny white flowers, which I think I shot at some point too but now can't find.

Besides berries, the plant has a very interesting shape. The leaves are small, round, and glossy. The dark green and very dark brown stems only make the berries (and flowers) pop.

It is a low-growing plant and tends to stay flat, close to the ground. It would make a nice bonsai if someone was into it :)

Since I did not know the plant, I never heard of anyone saying that it was edible. Google tells me it's not poisonous, but not really nice either. Birds like it, though, so it's another good plant to have in a garden and have something for them to eat in the winter.

avatar

avatar

avatar

The time will come that the right cat will find you in the right time :)

Thank you very much for showing us this beautiful plant.
Have a beautiful afternoon dear friend @ewkaw

avatar

Maybe it doesn't grow in your country... I have seen it in Poland and in Portugal, but could something more common in Europe.

It has also happens to me, when I discover something "new" I start to see it everywhere, I guess because I didn't have it in record or my radar, that plant must grow wild, if the birds eat it probably not be poisonous, although I wouldn't risk it, better that it stays as an ornament in the garden 😅

avatar

I guess because I didn't have it in record or my radar

That's probably it! It is just another thing w dont know until we know it :D

avatar

This is a pretty good image capture of the plant that my friend showed you. How are you today, friend, and I hope you are always healthy and fine.

avatar

Thank you!
Yes, I am fine, hope you are too.

avatar

Good. I'm glad to hear you're doing well. I am also fine and hopefully we are all always in good and healthy condition.

avatar

Close-up, great shots! The eleventh one looks like an alien spaceship or maybe a drone.

Little dark furry says:

Hey you! Come here, please a photo of my best angle! 😄

avatar

Thank you!

The little furry probably thought I will have some food... feel bad for disappointing him.

avatar

Now this shots are really incredible my friend, from afar they look like little tomatoes🥰🥰

So right now no one’s gonna eat it yeah?

Good job!

avatar

Hahah super tiny tomatoes.
Some birds might eat them. If they find them..

Thank you!

I have never seen this cranberry plant after reading on google it turns out to be toxic to humans.

avatar

They will not kill you, but not advisable to eat them :p

avatar

Why do I feel like having a taste 👅? Nice shots btw.

avatar

Cause they looks so juicy and tasty (thought they are apparently not) :D
Thank you!

I totally get the idea! Recently i captured some photos from the arbutus berry (Arbutus unedo), and after I identified it, I'm always seeing everywhere :)
Loved so much the set of photos that you got from Cranberry cotoneaster 😍

I simply loved the little dark furry shadow that was watching you! 😻

avatar

Phew... not just me then :p

The shadows was great. There are actually two black shadows like that. Both very cute :)

avatar

I particularly find out the shadow variant hairy creatures adorable!

avatar

I like how reds really show up from a distance in the woods.

The berries remind me of the fruit of the crab apple tree we used to have at my childhood home.

avatar

I know crab apple :) I used to eat them as a kid. Yea they are similar, but even smaller.

avatar

I have seen the plant before when I was climb to a mountain. But, I thought it was poisoned, so I didn't eat them. Someone told me that a wild plant with bright color is not good to eat. Then, I believe it until now.

avatar

One rule: Never eat a plant you dont know. No matter the colour.

avatar

Nice colors and details. ❤👌 beautiful work, i love it!!

avatar

I don’t know exactly where you reside, but here in southern New Jersey, I often see this plant being sold either at the local big box store, or at the nursery. I really love the berries that’s probably the best part of this plant overall. You got some nice photographs of it! I like taking Close-up, photos of berries and flowers as well so I can’t fault you for taking so many. Lol.

avatar

This was show in Poland, but I also see them planted in Portugal. They seem to be quite popular and easy to grow.

Haha yea.. just one more.. and from this side.. and one more :p
