It is a 1996 British film directed by Anthony Minghella. It is based on the novel by Michael Ondaatje and set during the interwar period. It starred Ralph Fiennes and Kristin Scott Thomas with Juliette Binoche, Willem Dafoe and Colin Firth in supporting roles.

A man, with severe burns all over his body, is traveling in a medical convoy on a road in Italy. However, he is so badly injured that he is unable to continue his journey. One of the nurses decides to stay with him in a partially destroyed monastery until he recovers or dies. The man has long conversations with Hana, the nurse, about his life; a life that hides a tragic love history during the years before the beginning of the war. A very special connection then arises between patient and nurse. Both will relate their pasts and their sufferings.

El hombre mantiene largas conversaciones con Hana, la enfermera, sobre su vida; una vida que esconde una trágica historia de amor durante los años previos al comienzo de la guerra. Entre paciente y enfermera surge entonces una conexión muy especial. Ambos relatarán sus pasados y sus sufrimientos.
This film is one of those that are hard to forget. Suffering and love are intertwined in such a way that it is difficult not to be moved. The plot is loaded with sentimentality. The history is set in two different times: in Tuscany during World War II and in Egypt between the wars. It presents two love histories (characterized by tragedy), that of "the English patient", who ends up being a Hungarian cartographer and member of an archaeological expedition, Count László Almásy, who was mapping the Sahara desert and whose romance with a married woman, Katharine Clifton, determines his destiny. And that of the nurse, Hana, who recounts her affair with Kip, an Indian sapper of Sikh origin in the British army. Due to events in her past, in which her boyfriend and a friend were killed in a short period of time, Hana believes that anyone who gets close to her is destined to die, and Kip's position as a bomb disposal man makes their romance fraught with tension.
Esta película es una de esas que son difíciles de olvidar. El sufrimiento y el amor se entrelazan de manera que resulta difícil no emocionarse. La trama está cargada de sentimentalismos. La historia se encuentra ambientada a la vez en dos distintos momentos: en la Toscana durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial y en el Egipto de entreguerras. En esta se presentan dos historias de amor (caracterizadas por la tragedia), la de “el paciente inglés”, que termina siendo un cartógrafo húngaro miembro de una expedición arqueológica, el conde László Almásy, que estaba realizando un mapa del desierto del Sáhara y cuyo romance con una mujer casada, Katharine Clifton, determina su destino. Y la de la enfermera, Hana, que relata su romance con Kip, un zapador indio de origen sij en el ejército británico. Debido a acontecimientos de su pasado, en los que murieron en un corto periodo de tiempo su novio y una amiga, Hana cree que cualquiera que se acerca a ella está destinado a morir, y la posición de Kip como desactivador de bombas, hace que su romance esté lleno de tensión.
The performances were phenomenal and the war environment very well done. I loved it and have seen it, I confess, several times. It has become a classic film that should not be missed.
La actuaciones fueron fenomenales y el ambiente de guerra muy bien realizado. A mi me encantó y la he visto, confieso, varias veces. Ha pasado a ser un clásico del cine que no deben perderse.
