Very surprised with the new film by Yorgos Lanthimos; the young director who recently gave us The Lobster and The Favourite; films that showed us that he is capable of capturing ideas and thoughts with quite elastic limits.

Poor Things, his new film, deserves to be seen for the amount of social and personal issues it touches on, which make us reflect, because they are seen from an adult with the mind of a child.

The story of Bella Baxter and all the characters around her, highlighting the female character and the perspective of life that she unveils to the viewers, leads us through a surreal world to reflect and redefine our conceptions of reality.

I just want to comment on certain impressions I had about this work, and why, from my point of view as a doctor, film fanatic and behavioral worker, it is a film that everyone should see.

Neither Burton, nor Almodovar, nor Fellini

Lover of Burton's and Almodovar's films, for their ability to capture themes that are difficult to digest for the viewer, as free-thinkers, highlighting personal and social issues or situations that need to be reconsidered; Lanthimos I feel has surpassed them in exposing several important issues without any cultural remorse.

I hope I am not offending anyone...

A Nietzschean man, unattached to social schemas, who directly embodies without remorse what he sees?

No one can create a surreal environment, very carefully, with such bizarre characters, without being fully aware and careful with what he does.

Here are exposed problems or realities about social control, machismo and the deformity of the feminine role that this misapplied social masculinity produces.

The social control that evidences the confinement that can live a subdued and watched creature, as the modern man; and also, the injustices and social disparities that exist in the world.

The character is focused on his confinement in black and white, with circular gazes that give claustrophobia, focusing his emotions and diluting the environment; as he did in La Favorita.

It also shows how difficult it is for us to accept the behaviors we manifest when faced with the basic needs of a human being, and to confront them when there is no control.

A surreal environment

On the other hand, we know that life is beautiful; and if we look at it from the environmental point of view, we see that we are immersed in a beautiful planet, where man has built wonderful buildings and there is a great progress from the scientific point of view.

This story is captured in a beautiful environment with a conjunction of different artistic styles; even at the level of architecture, we can even see buildings with a tendency of the great Gaudí -in my opinion-.

However, they are characters living tragedies or very absurd and complex situations in the middle of such a beautiful environment; and it is as if these incredible but possible stories were captured in the middle of a dream.

Moreover, many of those who have analyzed the film think that it is a kind of nightmare.

To me, it seemed to be a dream beautifully posed, highlighting the suffering, the evil, the innocence, the absurdity, the joy, the surprise, and all the human qualities that each of the characters transmit in their expressions.

Why do I say you have to see it?

First, because this director is being anarchic and unpretentious, as one critic said; and he simply expresses what he believes; and, as I said, he does it as if he were a follower of Nietzsche, absolved of social rules, with ethical autonomy.

But still, it is fun and because we will have a nice time; while the play sows a lot of questions about how man moves in modern society.

It is provocative; and it is exposed in this way to discomfort the human being who observes the play, before the profane situations exposed, as Richard Lawson of Vanity Fair said.

As for the performances: Outstanding. It is an exuberant, feminist, creative, wild work, in terms of human nature and wonderfully captured with thousands of cinematographic resources.

As a doctor I recommend it because we have to face the weaknesses and strengths of the human being, the behavior and what is behind what we do; to know about control and imposed conceptions.

And finally, because it is a journey that we all deserve to treat ourselves to about life, emotions and the intricate world of thought.

Pobres Criaturas: La nueva película de Lanthimos y por qué deberías verla -Reflexiones personales-

Muy sorprendido con la nueva película de Yorgos Lanthimos; el joven director que nos regaló La Langosta y La Favorita, hace poco; películas, que nos mostraron que es capaz de plasmar ideas y pensamientos con límites bastante elásticos.

Pobres Criaturas, su nueva película, amerita ser vista por la cantidad de temas sociales y personales que toca, que nos ponen a reflexionar, porque son vistos desde un adulto con la mente de un niño.

La historia de Bella Baxter y de todos los personajes a su alrededor, que resaltan al personaje femenino y la perspectiva de vida que va descubriéndonos a los espectadores, nos lleva a través de un mundo surrealista a reflexionar y a redefinir nuestras concepciones de la realidad.

Solo quiero comentar ciertas impresiones que tuve sobre esta obra, y por qué, desde mi punto de vista médico, fanático del cine y trabajador de la conducta, es una película que todos deberíamos ver.

Ni Burton, ni Almodóvar ni Fellini

Amante de las películas de Burton y de Almodóvar, por la capacidad que tienen de plasmar temas de difícil digestión para el espectador, como libre-pensadores, que ponen de relieve problemáticas o situaciones personales y sociales que deben ser reconsideradas; Lanthimos siento que les ha sobrepasado en exponer varios temas importantes sin ningún tipo de remordimientos culturales.

Espero no ofender a nadie...

¿Un hombre nietzscheano, libre de ataduras a esquemas sociales, que plasma directamente sin remordimientos lo que ve?

Nadie puede crear un ambiente surreal, muy cuidado, con personajes tan bizarros, sin tener plena consciencia y cuidado con lo que hace.

Aquí se exponen problemáticas o realidades sobre el control social, el machismo y la deformidad del rol femenino que, esta, mal aplicada masculinidad social, produce.

El control social que evidencia el encierro que puede vivir una criatura sometida y vigilada, como el hombre moderno; y también, las injusticias y disparidades sociales que existen en el mundo.

El personaje es enfocado en su encierro en blanco y negro, con miradas circulares que dan claustrofobia, centrando sus emociones y diluyendo el entorno; como hizo en La Favorita.

Además, pone en evidencia lo difícil que nos es aceptar las conductas que manifestamos ante las necesidades básicas de un ser humano, y afrontarlas cuando no hay control.

Un ambiente surrealista

Por otro lado, sabemos que la vida es bella; y si se mira desde el punto de vista ambiental, vemos que estamos inmersos en un planeta hermoso, donde el hombre ha construido edificaciones maravillosas y hay un gran adelanto desde el punto de vista científico.

Esta trama está plasmada en un precioso ambiente con conjunción de diferentes estilos artísticos; incluso a nivel de la arquitectura, podemos ver hasta edificaciones con tendencia de del gran Gaudí -a mi parecer-.

Sin embargo, son personajes viviendo tragedias o situaciones muy absurdas y complejas en medio de un ambiente tan hermoso; y es como si nos plasmaran estas historias tan increíbles, pero posibles, en medio de un sueño.

Más, muchos de los que han analizado la película opinan que es una especie de pesadilla.

A mí, me pareció un sueño hermosamente planteado, resaltando el sufrimiento, la maldad, la inocencia, lo absurdo, la alegría, la sorpresa, y todas las cualidades humanas que transmiten cada uno de los personajes en sus expresiones.

¿Por qué digo que hay que verla?

Primero, porque este director se está mostrando anárquico y sin pretensiones, como dijo un crítico; y simplemente plasma lo que él cree; y, como dije, lo hace como si fuese un seguidor de Nietzsche, absuelto de reglas sociales, con autonomía ética.

Pero igual, es divertida y porque pasaremos un momento agradable; mientras la obra siembra cantidades de interrogantes respecto a cómo se mueve el hombre en la sociedad moderna.

Es provocadora; y se expone así para incomodar al ser humano que observa la obra, ante las situaciones profanas expuestas, como bien lo dijo Richard Lawson de Vanity Fair.

En cuanto a las actuaciones: Sobresalientes. Es una obra exuberante, feminista, creativa, salvaje, en cuanto a la naturaleza humana y maravillosamente plasmada con miles de recursos cinematográficos.

Como médico la recomiendo porque tenemos que afrontar las debilidades y fortalezas del ser humano, la conducta y lo que está detrás de lo que hacemos; saber sobre el control y las concepciones impuestas.

Y, por último, porque es un viaje que todos nos merecemos regalar sobre la vida, las emociones y sobre el intrincado mundo del pensamiento.
