St. Augustine With the Super Ikonta
I promised more posts, and here I am to deliver!
If you have been following me lately you know I recently acquired a 1937 Zeiss Ikon Super Ikonta. She's an odd duck with a mislabeled door which made me think she only took 8 6x9 photos. I was sad about that until I developed the roll and realized that no, I could get 16 6x4.5 frames! For someone used to 12 6x6 frames in my Yashica Mat (still my favorite) I was super excited about the possibility of so many medium format photos.
So I packed her in my pocket (yes, she really is pocket sized) and took her to the most photogenic city I know: St. Augustine, FL. Here are a few of those shots:
This was right outside one of the best distilleries in St. Augustine. There was a guy with a huge Olympus DSLR (mirrorless?) who snapped a shot of me snapping a shot. He asked what I was shooting, kinda cool tbh. I wish I got his info, because that picture of me would be awesome to have!
St. George St, the "main drag" of old St. Augustine. It never gets old.
Same courtyard from in front of the distillery. I'm not sure if this wheel ever actually powered anything, but it's cool. Coincidentally, my daughter snapped a shot of me snapping this shot with my Nikon:
Yep, I'm a wildly dressed middle aged white dude with a ponytail and a hat. Who could have guessed?
Probably one of my favorite shots, a Michael Jackson impersonator, "Dancing My Way 2 College". I love the initiative! Unfortunately, I got dragged off by my kids before I could drop a tip. I'll have to get him next time I'm down there.
Anywho, I almost didn't get this out there, life is throwing yet more curve balls, I hope you enjoyed it! Hopefully I'll be able to post more tomorrow.

Developed in Caffenol as always and scanned with the Epson V600.

Lovely! In terms of the technical side, I'd say that even some of the >$1k or even more than $2k glorified contemporary phones can't make photos like these! Old is gold...

They really do have an awesome old school feel. It's insane to me that a camera nearly 90 years old has such sharpness, and that I, as non-technical as I am, can still figure out how to work the rangefinder. I only regret that somehow I messed up the development a bit and left a dark streak across a lot of the film. It's happened before and I have to wonder if it's a tank or agitation issue. 🤷♂️
True! Also, I think there is something magical in focusing on the development process and thinking how to improve it so you make one better picture, while at the same time millions of crappy phone tilted, out of focus and blurry images are flooding the net :D
