The film's very title led to its advertisement being denied across numerous media outlets, illustrating the societal discomfort surrounding adult content at the time.

Set against the backdrop of Pittsburgh, the film introduces us to its protagonists, Zack Brown (played by Seth Rogen) and Miri Linky (played by Elizabeth Banks), who have been best friends since childhood and currently share an apartment. Both struggle financially; Zack works at a coffee shop while Miri is employed at a local diner. Their meagre salaries fail to cover their mounting living expenses, leading them into dire straits as unpaid bills pile up. At a high school reunion, Miri attempts to rekindle a romance with her former crush, Bobby Long (played by Brandon Routh), only to find he is now dating Brandon St. Randy (played by Justin Long), a gay porn star.
