Film Review: Anvil! The Story of Anvil (2008)

The history of rock music is extensively chronicled by numerous documentary filmmakers who capture the journeys of musicians and bands as they reach fame and fortune through a combination of hard work, passion, and a touch of luck. However, the stories of those who have failed in those quests can be equally compelling. This is exemplified in Anvil! The Story of Anvil, a 2008 film directed by Sacha Gervasi.

The film is dedicated to Anvil, a Canadian heavy metal band that enjoyed a measure of popularity in the early 1980s, often being compared to iconic groups like Scorpions, Whitesnake, and Bon Jovi. Despite their early promise, Anvil never reached the heights of these contemporaries. By the time the documentary was made, two decades later, their dreams of stardom seemed like distant memories for the remaining members—singer and guitarist Steve "Lips" Kudlow and drummer Robb Reiner. While they remain passionate about their music, they are forced to supplement their income with ordinary blue-collar jobs. The narrative takes a turn when Kudlow receives an email from Tiziana Arrigoni, one of their most devoted fans, who proposes to help them organise a European tour that might rejuvenate their careers. This sets off a journey filled with initial excitement that quickly devolves into a series of disappointments as they attempt to record their album This Is Thirteen, facing financial difficulties, personal issues among band members, and internal conflicts.

Anvil! garnered widespread acclaim from critics, which can partly be attributed to the nostalgia felt by many reviewers, particularly those from Generation X who reminisce about 1980s popular culture where heavy metal played a significant role. This sense of nostalgia also influenced Sacha Gervasi's decision to direct the film; having been a roadie for Anvil during his youth, he had a personal connection to the band's story. Gervasi likely hoped that his film could alter the fortunes of his old friends while paying tribute to their contributions to heavy metal.

Throughout the film, Gervasi demonstrates an evident affection for Anvil and their music, as well as respect for individuals who continue to chase their youthful dreams into middle age. However, he does not shy away from presenting the harsh realities faced by Kudlow and Reiner. Their unwavering pursuit of a "comeback" is portrayed as somewhat delusional, suggesting that their aspirations may be ultimately quixotic. This duality results in a film that is both uplifting and tragic; it celebrates perseverance while also highlighting the often-painful reality of unfulfilled dreams.

One particularly intriguing aspect of Gervasi's storytelling is his use of humour derived from the stark contrast between Anvil's optimistic assessment of their chances for success and the actual reality they face. The film contains several comedic moments reminiscent of This Is Spinal Tap, the legendary 1980s mockumentary. Some absurd situations depicted in that fictional film seem to echo in Anvil’s real-life experiences, creating an engaging blend of laughter and pathos.

Despite receiving positive reviews and critical acclaim, Anvil! did not secure any prestigious awards. This may be attributed to its nostalgic and feel-good nature; it appears to have been overlooked by award committees that often favour serious documentaries addressing weighty subjects. Nevertheless, despite the various disasters captured on screen, Anvil has persevered. Kudlow and Reiner continue to record albums and perform live shows. By rekindling some measure of fame that had eluded them for decades, Gervasi’s film fulfilled its purpose—offering Anvil a second chance at recognition in an industry that had largely forgotten them.
