Film Review: An Education (2009)

Oscar-baiting films don't necessarily need to win awards to earn their place in cinema history. Even failed efforts can result in satisfying works and serve as a springboard for notable careers. A prime example of this phenomenon is An Education, a 2009 British period drama directed by Lone Scherfig.

The film draws its inspiration from the autobiographical essay of the same name by British journalist Lynn Barber, which was subsequently expanded into a book shortly before the film's production. Set in 1961, the plot introduces us to Jenny Millar, portrayed by Carey Mulligan, who serves as Barber's fictional alter ego. Jenny is a bright and attractive 16-year-old schoolgirl with aspirations of attending the University of Oxford. Her life takes an unexpected turn when she encounters David Goldman, played by Peter Sarsgaard, slightly older man whose charm and sophistication captivate not only Jenny but also her parents, Jack (played by Alfred Molina) and Marjorie (played by Cara Seymour). The approval of her parents marks a significant turning point for Jenny, who is eager to escape her mundane middle-class surroundings for the vibrant life that David promises in London. However, as their relationship unfolds, Jenny begins to overlook several red flags regarding David's dubious dealings. When he proposes marriage, she impulsively decides to leave school—a choice that ultimately leads to a devastating revelation about his true character.

While An Education checks many boxes of the Oscar-baiting formula, including a period setting, literary source, and respected British character actors, it lacks a major physical or psychological impediment within the protagonist, which might make the acting performances more interesting to Academy voters. Instead, Jenny's naivety is a typical trait of a teenage girl, which doesn't prevent Mulligan from delivering a strong performance, showcasing her character's vulnerability and charm.

Mulligan's portrayal marked the beginning of a remarkable career in Hollywood, showcasing her range as an actress capable of conveying deep emotional resonance. She is well-matched by Peter Sarsgaard, who has carved out a niche for himself in roles that straddle the line between charm and menace. Their chemistry is palpable; Sarsgaard’s portrayal of David strikes an effective balance between sleaze and charisma, making him both alluring and unsettling.

Scherfig, a Danish filmmaker known for her work in the Dogme 95 movement, takes a more conventional approach than in her earlier films, but it suits the material perfectly, allowing modern viewers to immerse themselves in early 1960s Britain. The period details are well-captured, thanks to the good script by Nick Hornby, one of the most renowned British writers of our time.

Despite receiving critical acclaim, An Education has faced some detractors who criticise the premise of a teenager having a relationship with an older man. However, the film's depiction is tastefully done within the confines of a PG-13 rating. The bigger issue is the film's ending, which turns the entire story into a pseudo-moralistic cautionary tale that doesn't quite ring true. In reality, Lynn Barber, the real-life inspiration for the film, didn't seem to learn the proper lessons from her experience, and like many of her generation, indulged in a wild lifestyle during the Swinging Sixties.

Nevertheless, An Education remains an interesting and well-made film that fans of classy British period dramas will appreciate. It serves as a launching pad for the careers of its talented cast and crew and offers a captivating glimpse into the early 1960s British social landscape.
