La Trama Principal

Para comenzar esta reseña, vamos a hablar sobre la trama principal de la misma; la película trata sobre una travesía que tienen que pasar dos personajes particulares: El Cabo Blake (Dean-Charles Chapman) y el Cabo Schofield (George MacKay) para enviar un mensaje urgente hacia una avanzada de soldados Ingleses que van rumbo a una inminente trampa del ejército Alemán.

La motivación principal de la trama surge a raíz de que el hermano mayor del cabo Blake está en la división que hará frente en dicha avanzada, por lo que, el General de mayor rango dictamina a su hermano menor como la persona encargada de entregar el mensaje.

Para cumplir ese cometido, el Cabo Blake debe elegir una persona que lo acompañe en la travesía porque el Coronel sabe que es un viaje extremadamente peligroso en el cuál probablemente se puedan conseguir con soldados alemanes y tengan que recurrir a la violencia y al ingenio para sobrevivir, todo con el fin de no perder una enorme cantidad de personas valiosas para la guerra.

Parecería una trama bastante simple, pero las aristas que están detrás de la misma fue una de las cosas que más me llamó la atención, y voy a seccionar en dos partes las cosas que siento que me gustaron y que no me gustaron en esta película, así que veamos...

what I DID like

• 1.- The Main Character of the Story

I have always been an extremely observant person, and in the cinema even more, but I must say that, although at the beginning of the film, with that medium shot where the figure of Schofield predominates a little more, everything indicated to me that he would be the protagonist, the plot itself made me divert my attention to the character of Corporal Blake because really the photography of the film made you understand that Blake was the protagonist of the problem, if we think about it, he had everything, he was the character who knew the most about maps, so it was easier for him to reach the destination, his brother would be in danger, it was the perfect motivation for him to be the savior of the whole situation, but everything changes when this happens:

You don't know how I hated Blake's death, but it was too obvious; as soon as the plane hit the ground, when I saw that they went to rescue the pilot I thought for a moment that he was an English soldier, but when he started talking in German I told myself that nothing, they would kill him on the spot, but when I see that Blake tells Schofield to get water and then the stabbing scene happens, I had to stop the movie to scream a little, it was too obvious that it would happen.

From this moment on, my mind snapped and I started to connect everything, but I understood that it was a mere GENIUS of the cinematographer of the film to make Schofield look like a kind of “assistant” to Blake when, in reality, he was the protagonist of the story, especially knowing that, in the first scene of both of them at the beginning of the film, it could be said that -in a symbolic way- we were spoiled with Blake's death.

  Recording in Sequence Plane

Before watching the film, I had already heard a little about it because of the fact that it is filmed entirely in a type of cinematic shot known as “Sequential Shot” which is nothing more than the fact of letting the camera record sequentially and without cuts; this technique is extremely difficult to perform, in fact, there are series and films where only particular scenes have been recorded in sequence shot, but not all the material as such.

I will assume that the idea of the sequence shot was motivated by the fact that the plot was simple and making cuts would have taken away the magic of knowing what happened in detail in the journey of sending the message from General Gilmore to Colonel Mackenzie; showing everything that happened from the moment they call Corporal Blake to the last shot where we can see Schofield closing his eyes leaning against a tree thinking about the fact that he had achieved his goal was genius from beginning to end.

Just so you understand why, if we look at it from a cinematography point of view, in order to make a sequence shot of that magnitude, you need too many people coordinated at the same time, just the people who carry the camera through the various scenarios, you need transports, the actors must be extremely prepared because we are talking about filming a scene that lasts the whole movie -although, in this case, we could say that there were 2 scenes in sequence shot-, the level of concentration is very high and the possibility of something going wrong is also high.

I simply understand that many things that happened during the shooting were probably purely improvisations adapted to the moment in which everything happens, an example of this is the scene of Schofield running through the trench while the soldiers run around him in the advance, there were soldiers who collided with him and he fell twice but he got up and kept running towards the camera, probably if he had not collided with anyone he would have just kept running and I do not think that this was clearly planned, or maybe it was and it was just an acting genius, we will not know.

• 3.- The Photography

A cinematographer is the one who is responsible for showing the audience the ideas of the director and screenwriter in the best possible way, now, when you use the cuts between shots is a task that is not extremely complicated, but in the face of a sequence shot I feel that the fact that in many moments the camera was squared for photography to show us an audiovisual delight was another factor why this film seems to me a genius.

Imagine the fact of understanding that despite the movement of cameras there will be moments of the recording where the camera must be in a specific point, the actors in another specific point, the extras in another specific point and everything to achieve the vision of the director of photography to show a particular shot in a shooting where you can not stop the camera to make cuts, everything has to be done with such enormous precision that it is sublime, it is an accumulation of things that make this a masterpiece.

Lo que SÍ me gustó

• 1.- El Protagonista de la Historia

Yo siempre he sido una persona extremadamente observadora, y en el cine aún más, pero debo decir que, aunque al principio de la película, con ese plano medio donde predomina un poco más la figura de Schofield todo me indicaba que él sería el protagonista, la trama en sí me hizo desviar mi atención hacia el personaje del cabo Blake porque realmente la fotografía de la película te hacía entender que Blake era el protagonista del problema, si lo pensamos bien lo tenía todo, era el personaje que más sabía de mapas, por lo que era más fácil para él llegar al destino, su hermano estaría en peligro, era la motivación perfecta para él ser el salvador de toda la situación, pero todo cambia cuando ocurre esto:

Ustedes no saben cómo yo odié la muerte de Blake, pero fue demasiado obvio; apenas el avión cayó al suelo, cuando vi que ellos fueron a rescatar al piloto pensé por un momento que era un soldado inglés, pero cuando empezó a hablar en alemán me dije a mí mismo que nada, lo matarían en el acto, pero cuando veo que Blake le dice a Schofield que busque agua y acto seguido ocurre la escena de la puñalada, tuve que detener la película para gritar un poco, era demasiado obvio que eso pasaría.

A partir de este momento, mi mente se quebró y empecé a conectar todo, pero entendí que fue una mera GENIALIDAD del director de fotografía de la película el hacer que Schofield pareciera una especie de "asistente" de Blake cuando, en realidad, él era el protagonista de la historia, sobretodo sabiendo que, en la primera escena de ambos al inicio de la película, podría decirse que —de forma simbólica— nos hicieron spoiler de la muerte de Blake.

• 2.- La grabación en Plano Secuencia

Antes de ver la película, ya había escuchado un poco sobre ella por el hecho de que está grabada completamente en un tipo de plano cinematográfico conocido como "Plano Secuencia" el cuál no es más que el hecho de dejar que la cámara vaya grabando de forma secuencial y sin cortes; esta técnica es extremadamente difícil de realizar, de hecho, hay series y películas donde sólamente se han grabado escenas particulares en plano secuencia, más no todo el material como tal.

Asumiré que la idea del plano secuencia fue motivado al hecho de que la trama era simple y realizar cortes de planos habría quitado esa magia de saber qué fue lo que pasó con detalle en la travesía de enviar el mensaje del General Gilmore hacia el Coronel Mackenzie; el mostrar todo lo acontecido desde que llaman a reunión al cabo Blake hasta el último plano donde podemos ver a Schofield cerrando los ojos recostado de un árbol pensando en el hecho de que había logrado su cometido fue una genialidad de principio a fin.

Para que entiendan un poco el porqué de esto, si lo vemos desde el punto de vista de la cinematografía, para poder hacer un plano secuencia de esa magnitud, se necesitan demasiadas personas coordinadas al mismo tiempo, nada más las personas que llevan la cámara a través de los diversos escenarios, se necesitan transportes, los actores deben estar extremadamente preparados porque estamos hablando de filmar una escena que dura toda la película —aunque, en este caso, podríamos decir que fueron 2 escenas en plano secuencia—, el niel de concentración es muy alto y la posibilidad de que algo salga mal es elevada también.

Simplemente entiendo que muchas cosas que sucedieron durante el rodaje segúramente fueron netamente improvisaciones adaptadas al momento en el que sucede todo, un ejemplo de esto es la escena de Schofield corriendo a través de la trinchera mientras los soldados corren a su alrededor en la avanzada, hubo soldados que chocaron con él y se cayó en dos ocasiones pero se levantó y siguió corriendo hacia la cámara, probablemente si no hubiera chocado con nadie habría simplemente seguido corriendo y no creo que eso haya estado netamente planificado, o tal vez si y fue simplemente una genialidad actoral, no lo sabremos.

• 3.- La Fotografía

Un director de fotografía es aquél que se encarga de mostrar a la audiencia las ideas del director y del guionista de la mejor manera posible, ahora, cuando te vales de los cortes entre planos es una tarea que no resulta extremadamente complicado, pero de cara a un plano secuencia siento que el hecho de que en muchos momentos la cámara se cuadrara para que la fotografía nos mostrara un deleite audiovisual fue otro de los factores por lo cuál esta película me parece una genialidad.

Imagínense el hecho de entender que a pesar del movimiento de cámaras habrán momentos de la grabación donde la misma debe estar en un punto específico, los actores en otro punto específico, los extras en otro punto específico y todo para poder lograr cumplir con la visión que tiene el directo de fotografía para mostrar un plano particular en un rodaje donde no se puede detener la cámara para realizar cortes, todo tiene que hacerse con una precisión tan enorme que es sublime, es un cúmulo de cosas que hacen que esto sea una obra maestra.

What I DID NOT like

• 1.- The lack of history about Schofield

This will perhaps seem like a silly detail, but I feel that, in order to have been able to satiate everything I wanted to see in this movie, I would have really loved to have been told a little more about Schofield's life; we know during the last talk he had with Blake that he hated home because no one cared about him when it was his turn to serve in the war, but at the end of the movie he holds up family photos telling him to come home, implying that he then actually lied about home.

I know the weight of the story was in the plot revolving around Blake and the fact that Schofield being a good friend would simply try to enforce Blake's word and the General's mission to avoid unnecessary loss, but I would have liked them to cover that part as well, if only by giving a little more detail.

• 2.- Schofield's inconsistency

I don't know whether to call it incongruity per se, but there is something that bothered me a bit about Schofield's character and that is the fact that they showed him as a character who really had no motivation at all to do anything, who traded a medal of honor from the war for a bottle of wine because he was thirsty, who was upset with Blake for choosing him for the mission knowing that he really had no personal involvement there and then transforming him into someone completely different determined to be the hero of it all.

I think maybe this is not that I didn't like it so much as it confuses me as a viewer, but I could understand it as the fact that his motivation changed as a result of Blake's death, because this sensitized him and made him now have a motivation he didn't have before: not to fail a friend in an implicit promise.

Lo que NO me gustó

• 1.- La falta de historia sobre Schofield

Esto tal vez parecerá un detalle tonto, pero siento que, para haber podido saciar todo lo que quise ver en esta película, me habría encantado de sobremanera que nos hablaran un poco más sobre la vida de Schofield; sabemos durante la última charla que tuvo con Blake que él odiaba su casa porque nadie se preocupaba por él cuando le tocó servir en la guerra, pero al final de la película sostiene fotos familiares en las que le dicen que vuelva a casa, dando a entender que entonces él realmente mintió sobre su hogar.

Sé que el peso de la historia estaba en la trama que giraba en torno a Blake y el hecho de que siendo Schofield un buen amigo, simplemente trataría de hacer valer la palabra de Blake y la misión del General para evitar pérdidas innecesarias, pero me hubiera gustado que cubrieran esa parte también, aunque sea dando un poco más de detalles.

• 2.- La incongruencia de Schofield

No sé si llamarle incongruencia per se, pero hay algo que me molestó un poco del personaje de Schofield y es el hecho que nos lo mostraron como un personaje que realmente no tenía motivaciones en absoluto para hacer nada, que cambió una medalla de honor de la guerra por una botella de vino porque tenía sed, que se molestó co Blake por elegirlo para la misión sabiendo que realmente él no tenía ningún tipo de implicación personal ahí para luego transformalo en alguien completamente distinto decidido a ser el héroe de todo.

Creo que tal vez esto no es que no me gustara tanto sino que me confunde como espectador, pero podría entenderlo como el hecho de que su motivación cambió a raíz de la muerte de Blake, porque esto lo sensibilizó y le hizo tener ahora una motivación que antes no tenía: el no fallarle a un amigo en una promesa implícita.

Conclusions

Regardless of the little things I didn't like this movie is a MASTERPIECE in all its definition, not giving it a 10/10 would be a crime against cinema, no matter that the plot is simple, on a technical level it is almost a miracle, on a photography level it is a genius, on a casting level it is magnificent, on an acting level it is divinely impressive, it is a masterpiece that anyone can enjoy on a Sunday afternoon as I did.

Conclusiones

Sin importar las pequeñas cosas que no me gustaron esta película es una OBRA MAESTRA en toda su definición, no darle un 10/10 sería un crímen contra el cine, sin importar que la trama sea sencilla, a nivel técnico es casi un milagro, a nivel de fotografía es una genialidad, a nivel de reparto es magnífica, a nivel de actuación es divinamente impresionante, es una obra maestra que cualquier persona puede disfrutar un domingo por la tarde como lo hice yo.
