MIRACLE IN CELL NO. 7...A perfect masterpiece.
Miracle in Cell No. 7 is a movie that really touched me; it made me laugh at some point but was mostly filled with so many emotional scenes. I am the type that usually laughs at people when I see them cry while watching a movie or reading a novel, but for the first time, I actually shed a tear while watching a movie. The movie showcased family, true love, the power of having good human relationships and connections, and also justice. It is a story based on a real-life story; it is 127 minutes long. It tells the story of an unbreakable bond between a father and daughter.
It is a South Korean movie. Lee Hwan-kyung directed the movie, which was released in 2013.
The movie tells the story of a man named Yong-gu (Ryu Seung-ryong), an autistic father who would move mountains just to make his daughter happy. He was wrongfully accused of a crime he did not commit: raping and killing a 9-year-old girl who was the daughter of an influential man (the police commissioner). He was tortured and forced to admit to a crime he never committed and was sentenced to prison to be executed, leaving his 6-year-old daughter alone, Ye-sung (Kal So-won and Park Shin-hye as young and adult Ye-sung, respectively).
The story revolves primarily around Yong-gu (a poor autistic single parent) and his very adorable daughter Ye-sung. Yong-gu got arrested mainly because of a school bag named Sailor Moon. He had been admiring the bag with his daughter at a particular store and was waiting for his paycheck to buy it for her. Unfortunately, that faithful day, someone came and bought the bag for his daughter (the police commissioner). He rushed inside and tried collecting the bag, but he was stopped.
Their lives turned upside down when he followed the commissioner's daughter, who offered to take him to a different store where he could get the exact bag. On their way, she tripped over and fell off. He tried resuscitating her using the CPR method, which didn't work, and he decided to try mouth-to-mouth. A woman saw him and raised an alarm. He was arrested for the murder of the little girl and sent to prison. Being autistic, he does not understand that he has been wrongly accused and implicated in a huge case.
In prison, he made friends with his cellmates, who later found out he was wrongly accused, so they decided to help him see his daughter again by smuggling her into the prison. It did not end there; they also made an escape plan for the man and his daughter so he could avoid being executed; unfortunately, the plan failed. He was executed for a crime he never committed.
One of the prison wardens adopted his daughter, who became a lawyer; she reopened her father's case in order to clear his name.
The movie reminds us of the importance of showing empathy and that the pursuit of justice is timeless; the truth will always prevail, no matter how many decades it takes. Family is not only blood; friends who are true and genuine are family; love has no boundaries; his cellmates treated Ye-sung like their own child.
I still think the movie is a masterpiece. All the cast members played their roles well, especially young Ye-sung, who was in sync with her character.
