Soundtracks: Mexican

I have always been a soap opera person. From watching “The Gardener’s Daughter” back in the early 2000s till now, though my tastes have changed. I used to be smitten with Mexican series and their actors. I had a book where I wrote about 30 of my favourite actors and I had their pictures on my mother’s phone. I had another column in the books where I wrote their age and whatever I found fascinating about them.

Till date, I come across Mexican series and movies where I can recognize more than half the actors even if not by their names. My favourite then were Angelique Boyer, Victoria Ruffo, Ana Brenda Contrera, David Zepeda, William Levy, José Ron, Gabriel Soto, Sebastián Rulli, and so many others but I fell in love with these few.

Angelique Boyer

The first thing that struck me with this French-Mexican actress was her high cheek bones. She looked like a doll and I enjoyed watching her. I got to see her the first time acting as Jimena in Corazón salvaje along side Sebastián Zurita. Their chemistry was something else however, the theme song did it for me.

Me Enamoré de Ti by Chayanne fit the movie so well. And as my young self so drawn to sentimental and emotional stuff, I was more or less always looking forward to the opening of the Telenovela than the series itself. I did not know how to get the songs of series then so, I would record and play over and over again.

When my mother got our Startimes Decoder, I was struck to come across Teresa with Angelique Boyer as the lead character. This theme was more upbeat and I loved it. I enjoyed the opening more than I did any other thing. This soap was also where I got to meet Ana-Brenda Contreras and was got sucked in by her innocent charm. She played Aurora who did not hold a candle to Teresa’s deceitful sensuality and cunning. I digress…

I watched her again as the lead actress in The One Who Couldn’t Love (La que no podía amar). She starred with Jorge Salinas and José Ron.

However, the sound track that I came to love was Corre by Jesse Y Joy. This was the official soundtrack for the two lovebirds and I love it till this day.

Ana as Maricruz in Corazón Indomable. It was fun to watch this girl go from dirt poor to the heiress of an empire. The song Déjalo Ir by Magarita is my go to when I feel like moving my limbs in salsa fashion (even if I don’t know what I am doing).

Also, the sizzling romance with her and my very own Eros in the person of Daniel Arenas who played Octavio, made me all kinds of way. All the more so when I heard Perdóname by Camilo Sesto Blanes. I can sing this song word for word…

David Zepeda

My greek god! David was my fantasy as a teenage girl. I got to watch him in The Power of Destiny (La Fuerza Del Destino) and the sound track is by Sandra Echeverría (who acted Lucia) featuring Marc Anthony.

I had no idea Sandra was a musician too but I found that out later. I play this song as well when listening to my Mexican playlist.

David Zepeda also appeared as Damian in Abyss of Passion (Abismo De Pasión) with Angelique Boyer. The soundtrack I loved was the one Junto A Ti by Alex Sirvent.

Extra Bonus

I can’t end this without dropping En Cambio No by Laura Pausini. The theme song for In The Name of Love (En Nombre Del Amor) where I got to meet and fall in love with Victoria Ruffo. She was my favourite character after Allison Lozz and Sebastián Zurita.

And then Hoy Tengo Ganas De Ti, the theme song for The Tempest (La Tempestad) starring William Levy and Ximena Navarrete. I sing along to this song as well. One of the most suspense filled and heartbreaking telenovelas I have watched has to be The Tempest.

Lest I forget Amor Sincero by Alexander Acha in the series A Refuge for Love (Un Refugio para el amor) starring Gabriel Soto and Zuria Vega.
