The Joe Pesci Show・You Should Laugh More

avatar

Greetings and salutations Hivers. Today I thought we'd do another You Should Laugh More post.

Research has shown that laughter is good for us. It has all kinds of health benefits. Despite most of us knowing this, none of us laugh enough. Yeah, I know, being an adult is tough, and furthermore there is a lot of grim stuff happening in the world. These things may be true, but that just is all the more reason for trying to get a little laughter into our lives.

This week I want to look at another SNL series of skits. This one doesn't quite match the brilliance of Celebrity Jeopardy which I shared a few weeks ago, but it did last a while and was good for some laughs. It's called The Joe Pesci Show, hosted by Jim Breuer playing Joe Pesci. Jim Breuer absolutely was C talent and never did anything beyond SNL—even most of his SNL work wasn't very good—but he did hit on a good one in this series of skits. His impression of Pesci, while not spot on, is close enough that we can suspend disbelief for the duration of the skit. He really nails the voice anyway and he exaggerates Pesci's rage in a very cartoon way that is fun. The Joe Pesci he plays is every bit the ultra violent psychopath from Pesci's mobster movies. What usually happens is Pesci has a guest on his talk show, the guest accidentally insults him, and so he beats the guest to death. It's a lot more fun than it sounds, trust me.

Let's start with this one, which pairs him with Robert DeNiro, played by John Goodman. Goodman's DeNiro is much better than Breuer's Pesci; he has the facial expressions down pretty well and he does the voice pretty well. Darrell Hammond is also on as Richard Dreyfuss and he does a great job.

Anyway, funny stuff. Enjoy!

This next one features Kevin Spacy as Al Pacino. His Pacino is ok. At times it's really good, but at other times you wonder who he's trying to play. Along with them is Darrell Hammond again, this time playing Rodney Dangerfield, and his Dangerfield impression is almost spot-on. His mannerisms are not quite there, but his voice is really close. Y'know, back in the day I saw Hammond as just a Phil Hartman wannabe, but watching this and the last, I'm getting a new respect for him.

Anyway, watch on.

This next one features Alec Baldwin as DeNiro. Baldwin is always amazing. When he moved from being a serious actor to more comedic, he really discovered his talent. It also features David Spade as Brad Pitt. His impression is truly terrible, but the situation is funny anyway.

Watch and see.

I normally limit my picks to three, but let's do a bonus one today. This next one features Jim Carrey as Jimmy Stewart. Now Jimmy Stewart had a very very distinctive voice, so many people do a pretty good job impersonating him, and Jim Carrey is no different. His version is the aged Jimmy Steward that would appear on Johnny Carson and read poetry. It's pretty great. There is a twist here that Jim Carrey's Jimmy Stewart then later does an impression of Jim Carrey. The result is hilarious. Also the ending of this episode of the Joe Pesci Show has a twist. Watch and see!

So what do you think? Did it make you laugh or was it just stupid? Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

Hi there! David LaSpina is an American photographer and translator lost in Japan, trying to capture the beauty of this country one photo at a time and searching for the perfect haiku.

Spacey did a great Christopher Walken too. It's too bad he had to turn out to be a total creep. I think my favorite SNL skit is probably the Jingleheimer Junction one with Cameron Diaz. Classic gold!
