House of the Dragon season 2: a slow dragon dance and the war that never comes [ENG/SPA]

Lately, I've found myself being really critical when writing about movies or series. I tried to be less harsh and focus on the good stuff, but it's not easy. After watching season two of House of the Dragon, my inner critic is going wild. It was honestly disappointing, I thought I was the only one feeling this way, but it seems to be a common sentiment.

Últimamente he notado que he sido muy crítico a la hora de escribir sobre cine o series, pensé entonces no ser tan duro y esforzarme por resaltar lo bueno de lo que veo, pero no es nada fácil y confieso que luego de ver la temporada dos de House of Dragons las ganas de ser muy crítico son muy fuertes, la verdad es que ha dejado mucho que desear, pensé que era solo yo el que tenía este sentimiento, pero he notado que es algo generalizado.

I mean, come on, we were all hyped for this show after Game of Thrones, right? The expectations were sky-high. But let's be real, it's not fair to compare them, House of Dragon is based on a single book, while Game of Thrones is based on seven books a whole library to draw from. Each season of Game of Thrones had so much material to work with, but House of the Dragon seems to be stretched thin to meet some kind of quota.

Creo que las expectativas con la serie fueron muy elevadas por todo lo que nos mostró Game of Thrones, se espera mucho de esta nueva serie, pero creo que no es posible comparar, House of Dragons está basada en un solo libro, en cambio Games of Thrones está basada en siete, cada temporada de la serie tenia mucho contenido para ser desarrollada, en cambio House of Dragons para que sea rentable parece ser que debe ser ajustada su trama y alargada lo mas que se pueda.

I think what people really wanted was more dragon action, those beasts that made the difference between one nation and another to exercise power and dominance, with all this talk of power struggles and dragon riders, you’d expect to see more than a few flybys and isolated skirmishes.

Creo que lo que mas desea la gente es el desarrollo de escenas que involucren mas a los dragones, esas bestias que marcaban la diferencia entre una nación y otra para ejercer poder y dominio, se supone entonces que si explota un conflicto por el poder y que las partes involucradas poseen dragones, entonces quieres ver dragones pelear mas seguido y no pocos avistamientos, y una que otra pelea aislada.

Being so, the most exciting episode of this season was the fourth when the queen that never was, Rhaenys, and her dragon Meleys face first against Aegon and his dragon Sunfire, demonstrating her skill and experience as a warrior by leaving him badly wounded and then face the fearsome Aemond and his dragon Vhagar who end up killing them both. This fight made me think that what was to come would be formidable, but what a disappointment.

Siendo asi, el episodio mas emocionante de esta temporada fue el cuarto cuando la reina que nunca fue, Rhaenys, y su dragon Meleys se enfrentan primero contra Aegon y su dragon Sunfire, demostrando su destreza y experiencia como guerrera al dejarlo malheridos para luego enfrentan al temible Aemond y su dragon Vhagar quienes terminan matando a ambos. Este combate me hizo pensar que lo que estaba por venir sería formidable, pero vaya que decepción.

Perhaps the disappointment lies in the fact that during the two seasons it is said on multiple occasions that war is coming, in the last episode of the second season we see armies marching and some preparations for combat, making it clear that this great war will possibly be fought in the third season. It is understandable that writers and directors want to make clear all aspects related to the conflict, that we know well which are the parties facing each other and how they got there.

Quizás la decepción radica en que durante las dos temporadas se dice en multiples ocasiones que la guerra se avecina, en el ultimo episodio de la segunda temporada vemos marchar ejércitos y algunos preparativos para el combate, dejando en claro que esta gran guerra se librará posiblemente en la tercera temporada. Es entendible que guionistas y directores quieran dejar en claro todos los aspectos relacionados al conflicto, que sepamos bien cuales son las partes que se enfrentan y cómo llegaron hasta ahí.

So the whole last episode was basically about character loyalties. But honestly, we already knew where everyone stood. The sides were drawn, and it felt like we were heading towards some kind of resolution, but nope. They're clearly planning on dragging this out even longer and now we have to wait another two years to have the great war that everyone is predicting.

Por eso el ultimo episodio la premisa es básicamente donde esta la lealtad de cada personaje, pero lo irónico es que ya eso lo sabemos desde hace mucho, el rol de cada quien está definido, los bandos ya se plantearon y todo apuntaba a un final con un cierre por lo menos parcial del conflicto, pero quedo en evidencia que se busca alargar mucho la historia, y ahora hay que esperar otros dos años para tener la gran guerra que todos vaticinan.

I appreciate when shows take their time to develop the story, but this feels different it is clear that this is not the case. It's like they're padding out the season just for the sake of it. And those little after-show segments with the creators? It feels like they're trying to justify for us to understand why there is still no outcome and wait longer the promised dance of dragons.

Puedo llegar a valorar cuando una serie o película se toma su tiempo para desarrollar el conflicto, pero aca esta claro que no es el caso, creo que por esa razón al final de cada episodio tenemos a los creadores de la serie y directores de cada episodio dando una explicación de lo que pasó, se siente como una justificación para que entendamos porque aún no hay desenlace y esperemos mas tiempo la prometida danza de dragones.
