Race for Glory: Audi vs Lancia (2024)- My Review
Rally, two legendary brands, only one can be champion. Want to know what it's about?
Since I saw the trailer, I was left wanting more. I'm a car fanatic and I love racing.
Rally is one of the modalities that, due to geographical fatality, I can't follow much, which is why this movie appealed to me twice. A good opportunity to get closer to these races.
Plot
The film narrates the story of the 1983 season of the World Rally Championship (WRC). We will have the legendary battle between Audi and Lancia.
This film is not about drivers, but about teams. During the film, we will follow both the directors and the drivers involved in this "battle".
We will go from the preparations for the season. Everything Lancia had to do to compete against Audi, in very unfavorable conditions and engineering. We will get behind the wheel, in the key races of this season and we will be able to enjoy or suffer, the results. All from your favorite seat.
The best part is that we will feel the tensions, concerns and feelings of the team members, especially the directors and drivers.
Everything concludes in the last race of the season. The drivers' championship is decided.
The constructors' championship will be decided in that last race. Here the world champion will be decided.
Will Lancia win? Will they be able to stop the technological advance of the Germans? or...
Will Audi win? Will they show that they are here to mark a before and after?
If you want to know who wins, don't wait any longer and go see it.
If I haven't convinced you yet, don't worry, keep reading.
The movie, I loved it
As it progresses, we get to know the characters (you may identify with some of them) but above all, I felt the evolution of the protagonists, revealing the essence of this sport.
The motivation and passion for racing, not against your rival, but against the clock, against yourself.
Another point in favor of the film is that you forget that everything is about winning. As in life, the teams have their ups and downs, it is very realistic in this aspect.
Moving on to the more technical aspects. The realism of the settings and the racing scenes surprised me in a pleasant way. The setting is at least very realistic, the cars, teams and the wardrobe in general, are carefully detailed (they are practically identical to the originals).
As for the cast, what can I tell you. Daniel Bruhl (Rush) as Rolan Gumpert (Audi director) for me with a very complete performance. When this gentleman appears in a cast of racing movies, watch that movie.
(As a negative point, I would have liked to see him more during the movie)
His opponent, Riccardo Scamarcio as Cesare Fioro (Lancia director), plays an authentic and very charismatic role. Drivers who have seen the film say that he managed to recreate Fioro almost perfectly.
The dramatic tension between these two and their teams adds an attraction to the film.
It is a film of approximately 90 minutes, to say that it is entertaining is an understatement.
If we look for a negative point, or a weak point, for me it lies in the character of Walter Rohrl, played by Volker Bruch. Walter is a world champion, who no longer seeks victory, but at the same time he is the right man to drive the Lancia 0'37. This character could have been developed a little more during the film. But this is already being very demanding with the film.
If you are looking for good racing scenes, intense rivalries and personal triumphs, this movie is for you.
Although it could be a recommendation for motorsport and especially Rally enthusiasts; the truth is that if you want to enjoy action, tension and good performances, this is your movie (you don't need any knowledge).
Although the creators and the film itself warn that some events were changed, the truth is that you should prepare for a very authentic representation of a rally season and everything that entails.
For me, the film fulfills what, supposedly, the viewer arrives looking for, a lot of action and tension.
Highly recommended
Trailer
At this point I would like to ask you, did I convince you? or should I continue?
If they gave you the chance to lead a rally team, what would be your first decision/measure?
Would you sacrifice everything for a victory?
If you are one of those who have already seen this film, leave me your impressions in the comments, so we can enrich the experience of others.
If you haven't seen it yet, when you do, come back here and tell me what you thought?
We've reached the finish line and it's time to say goodbye.
