The Factory (Zavod)

In the story of a factory on the verge of closure and unable to pay its workers for months, the expectation is that the workers will go on strike and get back the gains they deserve.

In the story of a factory on the verge of bankruptcy, it is obvious that expectations will lead to disappointment and logic will fail.

Whether you call it a black comedy or a black drama, the 2018 Russian film The Factory (Zavod) manages to surprise the audience with its plot.

You can tell in a few scenes that the movie doesn't promise a lot of action and immersion, but strangely enough it manages to keep you glued to the screen.

While questions about what will happen and how it will turn out occupy your mind, you witness time passing quickly and immediately after watching the movie, you have difficulty making sense of the big picture, but you like the movie despite knowing this.

Or maybe because of the strangeness of the story and the gaps created, the strangeness has rubbed off on me and I'm presenting a mediocre movie to you as a masterpiece. If you watch the movie and see the possibility of the second option, I apologize in advance!

The solution-oriented collaboration of 6-7 characters, each with their own difficult life story, who are highlighted among the workers of the factory at the point of bankruptcy, begins in a shorter period of time. Obviously, this beginning makes a difference and increases the pleasure of watching the movie.

The working conditions created inside the old, dilapidated and almost demolished factory and the factory that hosts the whole movie, with its bankruptcy view that is adapted to every scene, have created a magnificent atmosphere in terms of location and they have reflected it extraordinarily.

The way in which the factory workers, who refused to strike and wanted to find a solution in a short period of time, were told the illegal way was as successful as the story of the movie. I hope no one has tried this, but one of the best punishments for bosses who don't pay their workers for months is hidden in the story of the movie.

Of course, I won't go into details, but there are character and story transitions that weigh heavily on the simple plot of the movie. The unraveling of the characters who can't find common ground happens early and I think this unraveling leads to the birth of another story within the movie's own story. At moments when the audience might start to get bored, the movie suddenly comes to life and evolves, resulting in a charge of excitement.

The character of Greyhair (Denis Shvedov), who took all the responsibility and organized the whole thing, was like a professional among amateurs. He successfully portrays the appearance of knowing what he is doing until the very end. The action scenes he was in were the most enjoyable moments to watch. I like the power-oriented reflections of the strong characters created. Denis Shvedov has managed to reflect the power with the character he gives life to.

I am hesitant to recommend watching the movie. I am almost sure that some people will find the movie ridiculous, but for the reasons I have tried to explain above; I liked the movie quite a lot. For those who are looking for extraordinary, The Factory (Zavod) may be an opportunity.

Thank you for being here and reading. I hope I was able to give you some insight into the pre-watch. Have a good time and goodbye!
