Monos

Sometimes I tend to watch strange productions and I have no trouble finding what I'm looking for. A force tells me "you're asking for trouble" and for a few hours I actually find it.

In an isolated part of the world, a group of young people, from childhood to adulthood, undergo military training and fight for an organization called the Organization. Their main mission is to hold an American woman hostage and kill her if they are forced to do so. The life they lead, the training they receive, their worldview and the trust issues they face among themselves form the story of the movie.

From time to time in the film, we see snapshots and dialogues about them as children. After their military training, they establish a hierarchical order among themselves; their questioning of each other is overshadowed by their mission to a certain extent. After the raid, when they put the mission on the back burner, the instinct for life and their own efforts to exist come to the fore.

Despite its many awards, I have a hard time forming a clear idea of what Monos is about. I have no doubt that there is a message against the existence of child soldiers, but the story of the movie is full of gaps.

The fairytale-like atmosphere created in the movie and the presence of a muscular but dwarf character who trains the young people; I can say that it reminded me of Snow White and the 7 dwarfs. Maybe this may sound a bit far-fetched, but this was the first thing that came to my mind while watching the movie. I think the fact that everything goes well in the beginning and the characters continue as part-time soldiers and part-time children before they get involved in the events is effective.

The landscapes of the Andes mountains used in the movie were perfect. The adventure and action genre comes to the forefront when the journey starts at the summit covered with fog and enters the jungle. The emphasis on the characters being children, which is often made at the beginning, is later shelved. The implication is that the film is political propaganda against an illegal organization.

I don't know exactly what the truth is, but it is sad that children are used as tools for someone's ideological thoughts and plans for any reason, and the movie makes the audience experience this sadness frequently. Perhaps you should watch the movie in the spirit of adventure and the beauty of the landscape, or you should stay away from the movie.

The movie has a circus-like atmosphere with the sometimes senseless actions of the child characters. When they suddenly get serious and come back to reality, you struggle with the conflicts between them. At one point, I wanted to collect them all and take them to the playground. I think the fairy tale-like atmosphere may be something that may have come from this thought.

I recommend the movie Monos to those who are looking for interesting productions. I don't think everyone can watch the movie until the end. There are no extremely disturbing scenes, but the movie doesn't have a well-established story of its own. The existing story is full of gaps and even when you reach the end of the movie you can't fill them.
