Delirium - When you're in trouble, believe your mind, not your eyes

Last 30 days to freedom...

I think this statement would have been more effective if it was written on the posters of the 2018 movie Delirium. First of all, I must say that the movie is a great thriller, bypassing the horror label.

The story of the movie is about a character who loses his sanity after the murders he witnessed in his childhood years and is put first in a mental hospital and then under house arrest and then on his way to freedom.

The main character of the movie, Tom (played by Topher Grace), who is counting down 30 days to freedom, is put under house arrest after completing his days in a mental hospital. All he has to do is to complete the 30 days without any problems.

Still carrying the scars of his past, Tom struggles to distinguish between real and unreal images. The line "when in doubt, believe your mind, not your eyes" that he tries to dictate to his mind in those moments was almost like a one-sentence summary of the whole story.

The fact that the house he is locked up in is big and holds some secrets expands the story. I can say that I found the movie successful because of the location chosen and the opening tension that the location offers. Even the pool scene where the lids suddenly closed while swimming in it was scary by itself.

There were some gaps in the story based on reality. For example; it was strange that the place chosen to house arrest a man who has mental problems after the murders he witnessed in his childhood was the house where his childhood years took place, and I can say that it was a little grinning in the story during the viewing.

The character of Tom, who lost years of his life due to family problems, seemed to be blockaded by the law, the police, the handcuffs on his wrists, the house, the older brother and the problematic forensic control officer who kept refreshing his past memories. I don't doubt that all of this was designed to add more tension to the movie, but it detracted from the movie's value as it stood out too much as a shortcoming in the story.

The character of Lynn (played by Genesis Rodriguez), who has similar problems and wants to help Tom, is the one who tidies up the mess in the movie. Thanks to her, the story, which was about to go off the rails for a while, got back on track.

I said that I don't see the movie in the horror genre, it can be watched as a successful thriller. If you ignore some of the flaws in the story, I think you will have fun. The only thing I remember about the movie is; When in doubt, believe your mind, not your eyes, and I still smile at those moments.
