One of the things I like most about MUBI is the variety of its content and its curation process. I think they don't choose movies because they have been famous or bluckbusters but because of their cultural importance and their contribution to the world of cinema. In addition, you can find films from different eras and from different sources. On MUBI I have seen everything from Japanese classics from the 1950s to Russian films from the 1970s and films from Vietnam or Nigeria.

Una de las cosas que más me gusta de MUBI es la variedad de su contenido y su proceso de curaduría. Creo que no escogen las películas porque hayan sido famosas o bluckbusters sino por su importancia cultural y su aporte al mundo del cine. Además, puedes encontrar películas de diferentes épocas y de diferente procedencia. En MUBI he visto desde clásicos japoneses de los años cincuenta hasta películas rusas de los años setenta y cintas de Vietnam o Nigeria.

And within that variety it's also possible to get rare movies, those independent films that eventually become cult films for one reason or another. Such is the case of Primer, a time travel thriller written, directed and starring Shane Carruth (who also did the music and photography) with a budget of just seven thousand dollars. The premise of Primer begins with four men working in a garage building gadgets they don't always fully understand, but hope are new and interesting enough that they can get financing from a major company and make money. There are some differences between the four of them, and that's why Abe (David Sullivan) and Aaron (Shane Carruth) are separated from the others when they begin to discover some curiosities about the operation of the box, the latest artifact they have been working on. It's true that the first twenty minutes (and a good part of the film) are full of very technical terminology that is not easy to understand, even for the protagonists themselves, who are not able to gauge the scope of their invention until Abe discovers something both exciting and disturbing: the artifact works like a time machine.

Y dentro de esa variedad también es posible conseguir películas raras, esas cintas independientes que con el tiempo se convierten en películas de culto por alguna u otra razón. Tal es el caso de Primer, un thriller de viajes en el tiempo escrito, dirigido y protagonizado por Shane Carruth (quién además se encargó de la música y la fotografía) con un presupuesto de apenas siete mil dólares. La premisa de Primer inicia con cuatro hombres que trabajan en un garaje construyendo aparatos que no siempre entienden del todo, pero que esperan sean lo suficientemente novedosos e interesantes como para poder obtener financiamiento de una compañía importante y ganar dinero. Existen algunas diferencias entre los cuatro y por eso Abe (David Sullivan) y Aaaron (Shane Carruth) se separan de los demás cuando comienzan a descubrir algunas curiosidades sobre el funcionamiento de la caja, el último artefacto en el que han estado trabajando. Es cierto que los primeros veinte minutos (y buena parte de la película) están llenos de terminología muy técnica que no es fácil de entender, ni siquiera para los propios protagonistas que no son capaces de dimensionar el alcance de su invención hasta que Abe descubre algo a la vez exitante y pertubador: el artefacto funciona como una máquina del tiempo.

Time is one of my cinematographic obsessions (I have that in common with Christopher Nolan) and the whole topic of time travel, loops, time paradoxes like the grandfather paradox and the topic of whether it is possible to change the events once you know what is going to happen, can you change the future?

El tiempo es una de mis obsesiones cinematográficas (tengo eso en común con Christopher Nolan) y siempre me llama la atención todo el tema de viajes en el tiempo, bucles, paradojas temporales como la paradoja del abuelo y el tema de si es posible cambiar los acontecimientos una vez que sabes lo que va a ocurrir, ¿puedes cambiar el futuro?

At first, Abe and Aaron use the machine (a larger version of the one they built in the garage) for their personal gain (such as investing in stocks that will go up in price) with the intention of ensuring their financial stability, but despite being friends there are some suspicions and distrust caused by secrets that both keep and that are discovered in the last third of the film. In addition, the moral dilemmas of the protagonists and the conversations they have about the best way to deal with a situation that has no turning back are also interesting. Despite not understanding some of the terms used at the beginning, the viewer can feel the anguish, tension, and urgency of the protagonists when it comes to fixing things or not spoiling them, especially in disturbing scenes like the one in which - from a distance - the friends watch their doubles relive the day, so it doesn't just talk about time travel but deals with the Doppelganger, temporal paradoxes and the disputed inevitability of fate.

Al inicio Abe y Aaron utilizan la máquina (una versión más grande que la que construyeron en el garaje) para su beneficio personal (como invertir en acciones que subirán de precio) con la intención de asegurar su estabilidad económica, pero a pesar de ser amigos existen algunos recelos y desconfianza provocados por secretos que ambos mantienen y que se descubren en el último tercio de la película. Además, también son interesantes los dilemas morales de los protagonistas y las conversaciones que tienen sobre la mejor forma de abordar una situación que ya no tiene vuelta atrás. A pesar de no comprender algunos términos empleados al inicio, el espectador puede sentir la angustia, la tensión y la urgencia de los protagonistas a la hora de arreglar las cosas o de no echarlas a perder, sobre todo en escenas perturbadoras como esa en la que - a la distancia - los amigos observan a sus dobles revivir el día, así que no sólo habla de viajes en el tiempo sino que trata el tema del Doppelganger, las paradojas temporales y la discutida inevitabilidad del destino.

Very few films have been made on such a small budget and with such effort from one person, which helps the final product reflect his vision almost exactly as the film was conceived and that is to be applauded (the film is less than eighty minutes long). Although Carruth wrote, directed, starred in, photographed, and created the soundtrack for another film, Upstream Color (2013), he is best remembered for Primer for which he won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and which over time has become a cult film that some defend as a gem of originality and others condemn for being confusing, have any of you seen it? Son muy pocas las películas que se han hecho con tan poco presupuesto y con tanto esfuerzo de una sola persona, lo que ayuda a que el producto final refleje su visión casi exactamente a como fue concebida la película y eso hay que aplaudirlo (la cinta dura menos de ochenta minutos). Si bien Carruth escribió, dirigió, protagonizó, fotografió y creó el soundtrack de otra película, Upstream Color (2013), es más recordado por Primer con la que obtuvo el Gran Premio del Jurado en el Festival de Sundance y que con el tiempo se ha convertido en una película de culto que algunos defienden como una joya de originalidad y otros condenan por ser confusa, ¿alguno de ustedes la ha visto? ¿qué les parece? ¿creen que es de las mejores películas de viajes en el tiempo que se han hecho? ¿o le parece demasiado confusa y desesperante?
