Of the films scheduled to be released in the final weeks of this year, this was undoubtedly one of the most anticipated. Not only because it reunited Ridley Scott with Joaquin Phoenix after having worked together on Gladiator, but because this epic film focuses on one of the greatest and most famous characters in the history of humanity: Napoleon Bonaparte.

No sólo porque volvía a reunir a Ridley Scott con Joaquin Phoenix después de haber trabajado juntos en Gladiator, sino porque esta película épica se centra en uno de los personajes más grandes y célebres de la historia de la humanidad: Napoleón Bonaparte.

Bringing the complete story of such a character to the cinema would take many hours because this French soldier, politician and conqueror who was also emperor fought great battles and was part of one of the most convulsive and turbulent periods in French, European and world history. Few like him have managed to transcend to the level of a legend and therefore his history is full of memorable episodes, each one more incredible. That is why for the script David Scarpa focused on his military career, almost from the first actions that made him stand out, until his end and his exiles (yes, he was exiled twice). Hence Napoleon shows nothing of Bonaparte's childhood and very little of his later years. I can understand all of this, the story must be summarized in a few moments, what I cannot understand is that when it comes to this great character the film has been too little for me. The battle scenes, which there are, were not at all shocking to me, something key in any epic film. I think of 300, The Patriot, Braveheart, the LOTR movies, or even war movies from the likes of Saving Private Ryan and in all of them the action sequences on the battlefield make you jump out of your seat or get under your skin of those who fight to kill or be killed. And to tell the truth, I did not feel that emotion in Napoleon, not even when one of the key moments in Bonaparte's military career was shown: the battle of Austerlitz.

Llevar al cine la historia completa de semejante personaje tomaría muchas horas porque este militar, político y conquistador francés que también fue emperador libró grandes batallas y fue parte de uno de los períodos más convulsos y turbulentos de la historia francesa, europea y mundial. Pocos como él han logrado trascender al nivel de una leyenda y por ende su historia está plagada de episodios memorables a cada cual más increíble. Es por eso que para el guión David Scarpa se centró en su carrera militar, casi desde las primeras acciones que lo hicieron destacar, hasta su final y sus exilios (sí, fue exiliado dos veces). De allí que Napoleon no muestre nada de la infancia de Bonaparte y muy poco de sus últimos años. Todo eso yo puedo entenderlo, hay que resumir la historia a unos cuantos momentos, lo que no puedo entender es que tratándose de este gran personaje la película me haya sabido a poco. Las escenas de batalla, que las hay, no me resultaron para nada impactantes, algo clave en cualquier película épica. Pienso en 300, The Patriot, Braveheart, las películas de LOTR, o incluso películas bélicas de la talla de Saving Private Ryan y en todas ellas las secuencias de acción en el campo de batalla lo hacen a uno saltar del asiento o meterse en la piel de quienes luchan a matar o morir. Y a decir verdad esa emoción no la sentí en Napoleon, ni siquiera cuando se mostró uno de los momentos claves en la carrera militar de Bonaparte: la batalla de Austerlitz.

So with that against us we are already talking about a film not as epic as expected. Much better was the way in which the addictive and volatile relationship between Napoleon and the love of his life, his wife Josephine, was reflected. Regardless of whether it was faithful to the real story, the characters of both in the film represented a relationship that filled the screen in several scenes and that I found expressive and striking.

Así que con eso en contra ya estamos hablando de una película no tan épica como se esperaba. Mucho mejor resultó la forma en que se reflejó la relación adictiva y volátil entre Napoleón y el amor de su vida, su esposa Josefina. Más allá de si se mostró fiel a la historia real, los personajes de ambos en la película representaron una relación que llenó la pantalla en varias escenas y que encontré expresiva y llamativa.

I once read some of the letters that Napoleon wrote to Josephine and I think that in the film they managed to reflect that mixture of devotion and contempt, of love and hate, of need and obstacle that Josephine was for Bonaparte. Vanessa Kirby once again showed her acting ability in the role of Napoléon's wife. She was already nominated for several awards for what she did in Pieces of a Woman, a performance that I loved, and she will probably be nominated again for what she did in this historical drama, but I don't think the same will happen to Phoenix. Let's see, the actor who already won an Oscar for his Joker has nothing to prove. He's one of the best actors in the world and he delivers in each of his roles, but I didn't feel that his performance (nor his character, nor the film) was anything extraordinary. I didn't get emotional with his Napoleon, as I did with his Arthur Fleck (Joker), his Theodore Twombly (Her), even his Joe in You Were Never Really Here and in that lack of emotion I see another weak point of the film and we could add a somewhat fragmented narrative. That is, it's understood that the script had to advance in the chronology to skip certain events, but I think that some sequences are very short and other films manage to execute that passage of time better. We are talking about 158 ​​minutes long, which on the one hand seems to have been too few to cover everything that could have been told, but on the other hand seems excessive because the film has uninteresting passages.

Vanessa Kirby mostró una vez más su capacidad interpretativa en el papel de la esposa de Napoléon. Ya estuvo nominada a varios premios por lo que hizo en Pieces of a Woman, interpretación que amé, y probablemente la vuelvan a nominar por lo que hizo en este drama histórico, pero a Phoenix no creo que le ocurra lo mismo. Es decir, se entiende que el guión debía avanzar en la cronología para saltarse ciertos eventos, pero creo que algunas secuencias son muy cortas y otras películas logran ejecutar mejor ese paso del tiempo. Estamos hablando de 158 minutos de duración que por un lado parecen haber sido pocos para abarcar todo lo que hubiera podido contarse, pero por otro lado parecen excesivos porque la película tiene pasajes poco interesantes.

So, in my opinion, this movie has been a disappointment. Ridley Scott is the genius behind Blade Runner, Alien, The Martian, Gladiator and one of my favorite films of the nineties and which is very different from the ones I just mentioned, the iconic Thelma & Louise. Obviously Scott has great experience as a director and has achieved great achievements, but on this occasion I think he fell a little short. We are talking about a triangle of great talent, Scott-Phoenix-Kirby, and the biopic of a huge character in history, it was logical that we expected more from Napoleon. Maybe I am judging the director and the film too harshly or maybe it is that according to what was seen in the cinema this year the bar was very high, but beyond the recognition of certain names, for me there is no point of comparison between this film and other productions of the year that were far superior, like Oppenheimer and Killers of the Flower Moon, to name a couple. Although the film has only recently been released, I would like to know if any of you have already seen it and I would like you to share your opinion with me. Is Napoleon disappointing? Así que, en mi opinión, esta película ha resultado una decepción. Ridley Scott es el genio detrás de Blade Runner, Alien, The Martian, Gladiator y de una de mis películas favoritas de los noventa y que es muy diferente a las que acabo de nombrar, la icónica Thelma & Louise. Obviamente Scott tiene gran experiencia como director y ha conseguido grandes logros, pero en esta oportunidad creo que se quedó algo corto. Estamos hablando de un triángulo de gran talento, Scott-Phoenix-Kirby, y de la biopic de un enorme personaje de la historia, era lógico que esperáramos más de Napoleon. Tal vez esté juzgando muy duramente al director y a la película o tal vez es que de acuerdo a lo visto en el cine este año la vara estaba muy alta, pero más allá de lo reconocido de ciertos nombres, para mí no hay punto de comparación entre esta película y otras producciones del año que fueron muy superiores, como Oppenheimer y Killers of the Flower Moon, por nombrar un par.
