If the title of this post made you think of the multi-award-winning Anatomy of a Fall by Justine Triet, then mission accomplished, that was the idea. And, although it may not seem like it, this fun romantic comedy was also written and directed by Triet, before filming Sybil, where she also collaborated with Virginie Efira, the protagonist of this film. The success and quality of Anatomy of a Fall makes one think of Justine Triet as a woman of serious films, but Victoria reveals her funnier side.

Si el título de este post les hizo pensar en la multilaureada Anatomy of a Fall de Justine Triet, entonces misión cumplida, esa era la idea. Y es que, aunque no lo parezca, esta divertida comedia romántica también fue escrita y dirigida por Triet, antes de rodar Sybil, en donde también colaboró con Virginie Efira, protagonista de esta película. El éxito y la calidad de Anatomy of a Fall hacen pensar en Justine Triet como una mujer de películas serias, pero Victoria revela su lado más gracioso.

Victoria Spick (Efira) is a successful criminal lawyer who is as professional in court as she is quirky outside of it. Divorced mother of two little girls, her house is a real chaos: files everywhere, toys in every corner and almost no privacy to be able to have dates with unknown men in her bedroom. Furthermore, she finds herself in an increasingly complicated situation due to her relationship with three very different men. On the one hand there's Vincent, a friend of her for years, who is suddenly denounced by his partner who accuses him of attempted murder. As he trusts Victoria's professionalism, he asks her to defend him, but due to the closeness of the connection, she refuses at first instance. On the other hand there is Sam, a former drug trafficker whom she helped to avoid going to prison a few years ago and who, a few days after meeting again, moves to Victoria's apartment as an ad honorem babysitter/assistant. And to complete the picture, there is David, Victoria's ex-husband who, after the separation, has suddenly felt free to undertake his most recent literary project, which he shares with an online community of writers: it's a fiction about a lawyer named Spock who turns out to be - evidently - a not very favorable portrait of his ex-wife Victoria where there seems to be a lot of personal memories and delicate information on judicial and criminal matters.

Victoria Spick (Efira) es una exitosa abogada penalista que es tan profesional en el tribunal como peculiar fuera de él. Madre divorciada de dos pequeñas, su casa es un auténtico caos: expedientes por cualquier lado, juguetes en cada rincón y casi nula privacidad para poder tener citas con hombres desconocidos en su dormitorio. Además, se encuentra en una situación cada vez más complicada debido a su relación con tres hombres muy diferentes. Por un lado está Vincent, amigo suyo desde hace años, que de pronto es denunciado por su pareja que lo acusa de intento de asesinato. Como confía en el profesionalismo de Victoria le pide que lo defienda, pero por la cercanía del nexo, ella se niega en primera instancia. Por otro lado está Sam, un ex narcotraficante al que ella ayudó a no ir a prisión unos años atrás y que, a los pocos días de haberse reencontrado se traslada al departamento de Victoria en calidad de niñero/asistente ad honorem. Y para completar el cuadro, está David, el ex esposo de Victoria que tras la separación, de pronto se ha sentido liberado para emprender su más reciente proyecto literario, el cual comparte con una comunidad de escritores en línea: se trata de una ficción sobre una abogada de apellido Spock que resulta ser - evidentemente - un retrato no muy favorable de su ex esposa Victoria en donde pareciera haber mucho de memorias personales y de información delicada en materia judicial y penal.

Over the course of a little more than an hour and a half we will see Victoria deal with these three men, in addition to attending therapy, having sexual encounters with unknown men, abusing substances and drinking, and carrying out the defense in a controversial case in which two of the witnesses are animals, a dog and a monkey. A situation that would drive anyone crazy, so it is not surprising that after spinning in that intense spiral, Victoria ends up hitting rock bottom.

A lo largo de un poco más de una hora y media veremos a Victoria lidiar con estos tres hombres, además de asistir a terapia, tener encuentros sexuales con hombres desconocidos, abusar de sustancias y de la bebida, y llevar a cabo la defensa en un controversial caso en el que dos de los testigos son animales, un perro y un mono. Una situación que sería para volver loco a cualquiera, por eso no sorprende que tras girar en esa intensa espiral, Victoria termine tocando fondo.

Victoria, also known as In Bed with Victoria, has a balanced mix of drama, romance and comedy. That is, it is romantic without being cloying, funny without being ridiculous, and dramatic without being tragic. I think that balance is difficult to achieve because normally the stories on the big screen end up leaning towards one of these three aspects. What surprised me about the script is that it was written by Justine Triet herself, the woman who created Anatomy of a Fall, a thriller as wonderful as it is dramatic. And although Victoria is a lawyer and therefore there are also courts and a trial, I think that is the only similarity between both films (that and the presence of a dog as a witness). As a romantic comedy, it may be similar to many Hollywood productions, along the lines of the films of Katherine Heigl or Kate Hudson, adding of course that touch of French humor, with its ironies and sharp dialogues communicated at high speed and with a foreign accent. Hence, compared to more serious films, Victoria is at a disadvantage, but it would be unfair to make that comparison because these are two types of films and although this romantic comedy has more rhythm, madness and chaos, that does not means it's free of important topics or reflections on relevant issues.

Victoria, conocida también como In Bed with Victoria, tiene una mezcla equilibrada de drama, romance y comedia. Es decir, resulta romántica sin ser empalagosa, divertida sin ser ridícula y dramática sin ser trágica. Ese balance creo que es difícil de lograr porque normalmente las historias de la gran pantalla acaban inclinándose hacia una de estas tres vertientes. Lo que me sorprendió del guión es que fuera de la misma Justine Triet, la mujer creadora de Anatomy of a Fall, un thriller tan maravilloso como dramático. Y aunque Victoria es abogada y por ende también hay tribunales y un juicio, creo que es la única semejanza que hay entre ambas películas (eso y la presencia de un perro como testigo). Como comedia romántica, quizás se parezca a muchas producciones de Hollywood, en la línea de las películas de Katherine Heigl o Kate Hudson, agregándole por supuesto ese toque de humor francés, con sus ironías y sus diálogos punzantes comunicados a gran velocidad y con un acento extranjero. De allí que, comparada con películas más serias, Victoria quede en desventaja, pero sería injusto hacer esa comparación porque se trata de dos tipos de películas y aunque esta comedia romántica tenga más ritmo, locura y caos, eso no quiere decir que esté exenta de temas importantes o reflexiones sobre asuntos relevantes.

Victoria reflects on feminism, the role of women in today's society, the importance of mental health, procrastination, motherhood, the peace that a relaxed life gives compared to the hustle and bustle of a life in the city ​​and work in large companies, the fragility of human relationships, professional secrecy, betrayal and of course, love as salvation, as refuge, and as a threat when, due to past wounds, people flee from the possibility to surrender his/her vulnerability again.

Victoria reflexiona sobre el feminismo, el papel de la mujer en la sociedad actual, la importancia de la salud mental, la procrastinación, la maternidad, la paz que da una vida relajada frente al ajetreo de una vida en la ciudad y el trabajo en grandes compañías, la fragilidad de las relaciones humanas, el secreto profesional, la traición y por supuesto, el amor como salvación, como refugio, y como amenaza cuando, por heridas del pasado, la gente le huye a la posibilidad de entregar de nuevo su vulnerabilidad.

Just as she would do a few years later in Sybil, Virginie Efira leaves Victoria with an impeccable performance, so Justine Triet's versatility when it comes to writing and directing different stories is supported by the quality of an actress not less versatile and like her very talented. Always revolving around three secondary male characters, her ex-husband, her friend and her new assistant, Victoria also has a friend and her sister, in addition to her psychiatrist, but at all times she must remember that her best support and responsibility is herself (and her two daughters). I don't know if I agree with the critics who said that this was a refreshing romantic comedy, but it seems exaggerated to say, as other critics also said, that it is a story like all the others, because even if it is because of that French stamp it differs from most of the similar options that can be found today on different platforms. So, if you like love stories, dramas that take you to court, female protagonists, but above all if you enjoy analyzing and reflecting on how absurd human behavior sometimes is, I recommend that you watch Victoria, by Justine Triet, available on Prime Video (and if you haven't, watch Anatomy of a Fall later) have any of you seen this movie? Tal como lo haría unos años después en Sybil, Virginie Efira deja en Victoria una interpretación impecable, así que la versatilidad de Justine Triet a la hora de escribir y dirigir historias diferentes va respaldada de la calidad de una actriz no menos versátil y al igual que ella muy talentosa. Girando siempre alrededor de tres personajes masculinos secundarios, su ex esposo, su amigo y su nuevo asistente, Victoria también cuenta con una amiga y con su hermana, además de su psiquiatra, pero en todo momento debe recordar que su mejor apoyo y responsabilidad es sí misma (y sus dos hijas). No sé si coincido con las críticas que dijeron que esta era una comedia romántica refrescante, pero me parece exagerado decir, como dijeron también otros críticos, que se trate de una historia como todas las demás, porque aunque sea por ese sello francés se diferencia de la mayoría de opciones similares que pueden encontrarse hoy día en las diferentes plataformas. Entonces, si te gustan las historias de amor, los dramas que llevan a los tribunales, las protagonistas femeninas, pero sobre todo si disfrutas analizando y reflexionando sobre lo absurdo que a veces resulta el comportamiento humano, te recomiendo que veas Victoria, de Justine Triet, disponible en Prime Video (y si no lo has hecho, ve luego Anatomy of a Fall) ¿alguno de ustedes ha visto esta película?
