Within a whole universe of Asian films, actors and directors, those who have gained the most popularity in the West in recent years have been those from Japan and South Korea. Names like Hirokazu Koreeda or Bong Joon-ho, or titles like Parasites and Drive My Car have helped spread other earlier classics like Oldboy or Ran and that's why on my list of films to see - as surely as many of you - there are a huge number of Asian names.

Dentro de todo un universo de películas, actores y directores asiáticos, quienes más han ganado popularidad en Occidente en los últimos años han sido los provenientes de Japón y Corea del Sur. Nombres como Hirokazu Koreeda o Bong Joon-ho, o títulos como Parasites y Drive My Car han contribuido a difundir otros clásicos anteriores como Oldboy o Ran y es por eso que en mi lista de filmes por ver - como seguramente en la de muchos de ustedes - hay una gran cantidad de nombres asiáticos.

Among those many names, there is the 2010 film Angmareul boatda (I Saw The Devil), directed by Kim Jee-woon, considered one of the best thrillers made in South Korea. And since that's where great thrillers like Memories of Murder come from, I decided to put it on my list a long time ago and finally got to see it this week.
In a few words I Saw the Devil is a story of revenge. Like many of these stories, the film opens with the brutal murder of a young woman at the hands of a dangerous psychopath who seems to be used to killing young women he finds alone in out-of-the-way places for pleasure (there is a great deal of violence towards women throughout the film, which may be hard for some to see). Adding to the drama, not only is the young woman the daughter of a former police chief - a man who devoted thirty years of service to protecting his citizens - but Soo-hyun, the girl's boyfriend, is a secret agent who frustrated and devastated by pain, he swears to take revenge and inflict on the murderer all the pain that he put his beloved through.

Dentro de esos múltiples nombres tenía pendiente la película de 2010 Angmareul boatda (I Saw The Devil), dirigida por Kim Jee-woon, considerada uno de los mejores thrillers realizados en Corea del Sur. Y siendo que de allí provienen grandes thrillers como Memories of Murder, decidí incluirla en mi lista hace mucho tiempo y finalmente pude verla esta semana.
En pocas palabras I Saw the Devil es la historia de una venganza. Como muchas de estas historias, el film inicia con el brutal asesinato de una joven a manos de un psicópata peligroso que parece estar acostumbrado a matar por placer a mujeres jóvenes que encuentra solas en lugares apartados (en toda la película hay una gran cantidad de violencia hacia las mujeres, lo que puede resultar difícil de ver para algunos). Para mayor drama, la joven no sólo es la hija de un ex jefe de la policía - un hombre que dedicó treinta años de servicio a proteger a sus ciudadanos - sino que Soo-hyun, el novio de la chica, es un agente secreto que, frustrado y devastado por el dolor, jura vengarse e inflingirle al asesino todo el dolor que éste le hizo pasar a su amada.

The girl's father gives Soo-hyun the file of the four suspects in the crime, men who in the past have been accused of similar crimes and after requesting a special two-week leave from work, claiming it is to mourn, begins a process of hunting without distinction: he will not find out beforehand who did it. He will find each of these men and torture them until he discovers who the real culprit is.

El padre de la chica le entrega a Soo-hyun el expediente de los cuatro sospechosos del crimen, hombres que en el pasado han sido acusados de crímenes similares y tras pedir en su trabajo un permiso especial de dos semanas alegando que es para pasar su duelo, comienza un proceso de cacería sin distinción: no va a averiguar previamente quién lo hizo. Encontrará a cada uno de estos hombres y los torturará hasta descubrir quién es el verdadero culpable.

But when our secret agent finds Kyung-chul, the real killer, it's not even an hour into the movie (which isn't enough considering the film is 144 minutes long), how are they going to extend the plot so much? It turns out that Soo-hyun wants to prolong the murderer's suffering, torturing him, inflicting pain on him, enough to make him despair, but not enough to kill him: he wants to leave him alive and free him, to catch him again later and torture him a little more, because he believes that only that way his revenge will be fair. Baffled by this attitude, the killer is confused at first, but then only becomes even more enraged and an unstoppable spiral of violence and blood ensues through which three forces run: Kyung-chul, Soo-hyun and the city police who's on the trail, not only of the murderer of the former chief's daughter, but also of that vigilante who is taking the law into his own hands.

Pero cuando nuestro agente secreto encuentra a Kyung-chul, el verdadero asesino, ni siquiera va una hora de película (lo que es poco si consideramos que la cinta dura 144 minutos), ¿cómo van a extender tanto la trama? Resulta que Soo-hyun quiere dilatar el sufrimiento del asesino, torturándolo, infingiéndole dolor, suficiente que se desespere, pero no como para matarlo: quiere dejarlo vivo y liberarlo, para volver a atraparlo luego y tortutarlo un poco más, pues cree que sólo de esa manera su venganza será justa. Descolocado por esta actitud, el asesino se siente confundido al principio, pero luego sólo se enfurece aún más y se genera una espiral imparable de violencia y sangre por el que corren tres fuerzas: Kyung-chul, Soo-hyun y la policía de la ciudad que va tras la pista, no sólo del asesino de la hija del ex jefe del cuerpo sino también de ese justiciero que está tomando la justicia por sus propias manos.

I Saw the Devil is a serial killer police thriller, a revenge story, but also a very gory film in which there are wild and disturbing scenes due to how graphic they are: rape, dismemberment, murder, torture, cannibalism, everything is present, and some scenes about the wounds inflicted are too realistic and bloody. In addition, the psychological aspect of the characters plays a very important role in the development of the plot in which the roles of hunter and prey are reversed several times; and the soundtrack is dramatic enough. Personally, I feel that there are scenes that are too gory for my liking, but the dilemma that arises when seeing a man become a monster to hunt another is interesting. It reminds me of a sentence that I recently read in which that "if you kill a murderer, the number of murderers does not decrease". Interesting, right? Finally, I recognize that the photography is very well executed and that the interpretation of Choi Min-sik (actor who starred in the acclaimed Oldboy) as Kyung-chul is on a par with the great psychopaths in film history, do any of you have you seen this movie? I Saw the Devil es un thriller policíaco de asesinos en serie, una historia de venganza, pero también una cinta muy gore en la que hay escenas salvajes y perturbadoras debido a lo gráficas que son: violaciones, desmembramientos, asesinatos, torturas, canibalismo, todo está presente, y algunas escenas sobre las heridas infligidas resultan demasiado realistas y sangrientas. Además, el aspecto psicológico de los personajes juega un papel importantísimo en el desarrollo de la trama en la cual varias veces se invierten los papeles de cazador y presa; y el sundtrack es lo suficientemente dramático. En lo personal, siento que hay escenas muy gore para mi gusto, pero es interesante el dilema que se plantea al ver a un hombre convertirse en un monstruo para cazar a otro, me hace recordar una frase que leí hace poco en la que se sostiene que "si matas a un asesino, el número de asesinos no disminuye". Interesante, ¿cierto? Por último, reconozco que la fotografía está muy bien ejecutada y que la interpretación de Choi Min-sik (actor que protagonizó la aclamada Oldboy) como Kyung-chul está a la altura de los grandes psicópatas de la historia del cine, ¿alguno de ustedes ha visto esta película?
