Without a doubt one of the most anticipated films of this year was Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, a prequel to the acclaimed Mad Max: Fury Road from 2015. Some so-called fans of the franchise didn't like the idea of ​​making a Mad Max story without its famous character and focusing on Furiosa, but it must be said: Fury Road also focused (a lot) on this powerful female character played at the time by Charlize Theron.

A algunos mal llamados fanáticos de la franquicia no les gustó la idea de hacer una historia de Mad Max sin su insigne personaje y que se centrara en Furiosa, pero hay que decirlo: Fury Road también se centró (y mucho) en este poderoso personaje femenino interpretado en su momento por Charlize Theron.

Due to several personal commitments, I wasn't able to see this film during its first two weeks in theaters as I would have liked and as the days went by I found different opinions on the networks and the news that the film had been a failure at the box office. We usually associate that if a movie is liked a lot, it sells a lot, then it's good, but there 's enough precedent to not get carried away by that information, so regardless of the bad reviews and the few sales, I was still excited to go see this movie, a little because of its predecessor and a little more because of the presence of Anya Tayor-Joy who has never disappointed me in any of her performances. Like the previous story that won six Oscars, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga was directed by George Miller and this time the story starts a little further back in time, as the story of Furiosa is told since childhood, long before meeting Mad Max, Immortan Joe and the Citadel. For those who saw the previous film, do you remember that Furiosa talked about a place of abundance, of a lot of greenery, from which she came? Well, this movie shows that place, who lived there and how, when and why, as a child, Furiosa was torn from her home and from the arms of her mother - who was murdered - by Dementus, played by a colorful and cruel Chris Hemsworth.

Debido a diversos compromisos personales, no pude ver esta película durante sus primeras dos semanas en cartelera como hubiera querido y conforme pasaron los días me fui encontrando en las redes con diferentes opiniones y con la noticia de que la cinta había sido un fracaso en taquilla. Solemos asociar que si una película gusta mucho, vende mucho, entonces es buena, pero hay suficientes antecendentes como para no dejarse llevar por esa información, así que indiferentemente de las malas críticas y de las pocas ventas aún estaba emocionado por ir a ver esta película, un poco por su predecesora y un poco más por la presencia de Anya Tayor-Joy que no me ha defraudado nunca en ninguna de sus actuaciones. Igual que la entrega anterior que se llevó seis premios Oscars, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga fue dirigida por George Miller y esta vez la historia parte un poco más atrás en el tiempo, pues se cuenta la historia de Furiosa desde la niñez, mucho antes de conocer a Mad Max, al Inmortan Joe y la Ciudadela. Para quienes vieron la película anterior, ¿recuerdan que Furiosa hablaba de un lugar de abundancia, de mucho verdor, del cual ella provenía? Bien, en esta película se muestra ese lugar, quiénes vivían allí y cómo, cuándo y por qué, siendo niña, Furiosa fue arrancada de su hogar y de los brazos de su madre - quien fue asesinada - por Dementus, interpretado por un pintoresco y cruel Chris Hemsworth.

Australia is a huge country and in the great Wasteland there seems to be nothing but Citadel, Gastown and The Bullet Farm, but the girl knows that her home is there, to the east, traveling straight for several days. Escaping and fleeing in that direction is such a simple idea that Furiosa tries it several times, but fails. Her odyssey back home is delayed again and again by the threads of fate.

Desde entonces el deseo de Furiosa es uno solo: volver a casa. Australia es un país enorme y en el gran Yermo parece no haber nada más que Citadel (la Ciudadela), Gastown y The Bullet Farm, pero la niña sabe que su hogar está allí, hacia el este, viajando recto durante varios días. Escapar y huir en esa dirección es una idea tan sencilla que Furiosa lo intenta varias veces, pero no lo consigue. Whoever knows the theory of The Hero's Journey by Joseph Campbell will be able to recognize each of the stages in the plot of Furiosa. In that sense, the story is well constructed. It's broadly predictable, but it makes up for that predictability with good cinematography, scenes of unexpected graphic violence, and a couple of plot twists that we expected, but perhaps not at that time or in that way. Furiosa is a pure and tough action movie. Car chases, explosions, war, hand-to-hand fighting, knives, firearms, huge vehicles, blood, mutilations, fires... it has everything throughout its almost two and a half hours, including an action sequence 15 minutes that took 78 days to film (yes, 78 days!), a key scene to understand the mentality and worth of the protagonist. Furthermore, the performances are also very good. Hemsworth plays a villain typical of a place like the Wasteland: ambitious, boastful, truculent and somewhat crazy, of course, with the firm purpose of surviving, but also achieving it through power. There are still those who see the actor as Thor, the Marvel character, but his interpretation and the character of Dementus are something completely different. However, truth be told, Furiosa is what it is thanks to Anya Taylor-Joy.

Quien conozca la teoría de El Viaje del Héroe de Joseph Campbell podrá reconocer en la trama de Furiosa cada una de las etapas. En ese sentido, la historia está bien construida. A grandes rasgos es predecible, pero compensa esa predictibilidad con una buena cinematografía, escenas de una inesperada violencia gráfica y un par de giros en la trama que esperábamos, pero quizás no en ese momento o de esa manera. Furiosa es una película de acción pura y dura. Persecuciones en auto, explosiones, guerra, luchas cuerpo a cuerpo, armas blancas, armas de fuego, vehículos enormes, sangre, mutilaciones, incendios... tiene de todo a lo largo de sus casi dos horas y media, incluida una secuencia de acción de 15 minutos que tardó 78 días en filmarse (¡sí, 78 días!), una escena clave para entender la mentalidad y la valía de la protagonista. Además, las actuaciones también son muy buenas. Hemsworth interpreta a un villano propio de un lugar como el Yermo: ambicioso, fanfarrón, truculento y algo loco, por supuesto, con el firme propósito de sobrevivir, pero además conseguirlo a través del poder. Aún hay quienes ven al actor como Thor, el personaje de Marvel, pero su interpretación y el personaje de Dementus son algo completamente diferente. Sin embargo, la verdad dicha, Furiosa es lo que es gracias a Anya Taylor-Joy.

Playing such a complex character, who also has less than thirty lines of dialogue in the entire film, is not an easy task, but Anya emerged victorious from the challenge because she manages to communicate without having to say anything: she does it with her gaze. There are many sequences in which Furiosa does not speak, but acts, moves, makes gestures and, above all, looks. And his eyes convey strength, sadness, disgust, frustration, desire for revenge, indolence and many other emotions more convincingly than many speeches given in the cinema.

Interpretar un personaje tan complejo, que además tiene menos de treinta líneas de diálogo en toda la película no es tarea fácil, pero Anya salió victoriosa del desafío porque logra comunicarse sin necesidad de decir nada: lo hace con su mirada. Son muchas las secuencias en las que Furiosa no habla, pero actúa, se mueve, hace gestos y sobre todo, mira. Y sus ojos transmiten fuerza, tristeza, asco, frustración, deseos de venganza, indolencia y muchas otras emociones de manera más convincente que muchos discursos pronunciados en el cine.

It is evident that Anya Taylor-Joy is one of the most talented actresses of her generation and although the box office has not accompanied the film, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will remain in history thanks to her great performance . It's worth noting that Anya first appears about halfway through the film, but Alyla Browne, the actress who plays Furiosa as a child, is also extremely talented and manages to use her eyes to speak, just as Anya does. It must also be recognized that the plot and the way in which this movie is linked to Fury Road makes a lot of sense and fits well (which is more than can be said for some prequels). Perhaps the only unconvincing point - but this is already overthinking things - is the strength that Furiosa emanates, how she imposes herself as a great warrior and how she fights in such a hostile environment, with Anya being such a petite actress. For example, if she's placed next to Chris Hemsworth, it becomes somewhat difficult to believe that she can subdue him in any way. Beyond that, Furiosa is a great action movie, it's a very good prequel, and also a great demonstration of Anya Taylor-Joy's acting ability. Any of these three is reason enough to see the movie, even if - like me - you are not a fan of the saga or action movies, who has seen it already? did you like it? I read you in the comments.

Es evidente que Anya Taylor-Joy es una de las actrices más talentosas de su generación y si bien la taquilla no ha acompañado a la película, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga quedará en la historia gracias a su gran interpretación. Vale la pena destacar que Anya aparece por primera vez cerca de la mitad de la película, pero Alyla Browne, la actriz que interpreta a Furiosa siendo niña, también tiene un gran talento y logra utilizar su mirada para hablar, tal como lo hace Anya. También hay que reconocer que la trama y la forma en que la enlazan esta película con Fury Road, tiene bastante sentido y queda bien (que es más de lo que se puede decir de algunas precuelas). Quizás el único punto poco convincente - pero esto ya es darle demasiadas vueltas a las cosas - es la fuerza que emana Furiosa, cómo se impone como una gran guerrera y cómo combate en un ambiente tan hostil, siendo Anya una actriz tan menuda. Por ejemplo, si se le coloca al lado de Chris Hemsworth, se hace algo difícil de creer que pueda someterlo de alguna manera. Más allá de eso, Furiosa es una gran película de acción, es una muy buena precuela, y una gran demostración también de la capacidad actoral de Anya Taylor-Joy.
