Almost a month after its release, I finally went to see the third installment of the saga of this irreverent character to publish this review. First of all, I would like to clarify that I'm not a fan of Marvel and its MCU (although I grew up watching these characters on television) and I had no expectations other than having a good time and hoping that this movie would be better than the second installment of the franchise. And also, it's necessary to say, the assessment I will make of the film has to do with key elements in the plot; that is to say: there will be spoilers. You are warned.

A casi un mes de su estreno, finalmente fui a ver la tercera entrega de la saga de este irreverente personaje para publicar esta reseña. Antes que nada, quisiera aclarar que no soy fan de Marvel y su MCU (aunque crecí viendo a estos personajes en la televisión) y no tenía más expectativas que pasar un buen rato y que ojalá esta película fuese mejor que la segunda entrega de la franquicia. Y también, es necesario que lo diga, la valoración que haré de la película tiene que ver con elementos claves en la trama; es decir: habrá spoilers. Quedan advertidos.

Just like the second part of the franchise, Deadpool & Wolverine uses a non-linear timeline to tell its story, and that's why, after a fun and violent introduction in which Deadpool searches for Wolverine's grave (the one we saw at the end of Logan), the movie takes a turn to explain a bit of the context before going back there. Without going into too much detail, it all starts with an apathetic and normal Wade Wilson living a life as an ordinary man with his loved ones, including Vanessa, whom he saved at the end of the second movie after she had died. But the problems begin when the Time Variance Authority (TVA) comes to Deadpool and explains two things: first, that what he did by altering his timeline to save Vanessa was wrong; and second, that his universe will collapse very soon, annihilating everyone but him if he decides to join the TVA and help save others. Then a few things happen that I won't reveal so as not to give away everything, but the truth is that Deadpool begins to travel through the different universes in order to find a version of Wolverine that can help him in his mission to save his timeline. After searching a lot and exploring alternatives that are fun cameos and a tribute to the most ardent fans of the mythical X-Men character, he finally finds a Logan who, despite being broken and carrying a lot of guilt on his back, can help him in his odyssey. Not without some resistance, of course.

Al igual que en la segunda parte de la franquicia, Deadpool & Wolverine utiliza un tiempo no lineal para narrar la historia y esa es la razón por la que, luego de una divertida y violenta introducción en la que Deadpool busca la tumba de Wolverine (la que vimos al final de Logan) la película da una vuelta para explicar un poco el contexto antes de volver allí. Sin entrar en demasiados detalles, todo comienza con un apático y normal Wade Wilson que lleva una vida como un hombre común junto a sus seres queridos, incluida Vanessa, a quien salvó al final de la segunda película después de que hubiera muerto. Pero los poblemas comienzan cuando la Time Variance Authority (TVA) acude a Deadpool y le explica dos cosas: primero, que estuvo mal lo que hizo al modificar su línea temporal para salvar a Vanessa; y segundo, que su universo colapsará muy pronto, aniquilando a todos, menos a él, si decide unirse a la TVA y ayudar a salvar a otros. Luego ocurren varias cosas que no voy a reverlar para no contarlo todo, pero lo cierto es que Deadpool comienza a viajar a través de los diferentes universos para poder encontrar una versión de Wolverine que lo pueda ayudar en su misión de salvar su línea temporal. Después de buscar mucho y explorar alternativas que son cameos divertidos y un homenaje a los más férreos fanáticos del mítico personaje de los X-Men, finalmente consigue un Logan que, a pesar de estar roto y llevar una gran culpa a sus espaldas, puede ayudarlo en su odisea. No sin alguna resistencia, por supuesto.

From then on, the film uses the already worn-out resources of the MCU, mainly the cameos and connections between stories and the theme of the multiverse, in some way already a bit prostituted within the franchise. And the other pillar of the film is the hallmark of Deadpool's stories: violence, blood, bad words and a large number of jokes and pranks that overflow with irony, insults, a lot of self-criticism and a lot of cultural references. I don't say this as a negative thing: these are the things that make Deadpool Deadpool as much as the constant breaking of the fourth wall, a resource that few characters have exploited as much as this one.

De ahí en adelante la película utiliza los recursos ya gastados del MCU, principalmente los cameos y conexiones entre historias y el tema del multiverso, de alguna manera ya un poco prostituido dentro de la franquicia. Y el otro pilar de la película es el sello de las historias de Deapool: violencia, sangre, malas palabras y una gran cantidad de chistes y bromas que rebosan de ironía, insultos, mucha auto crítica y un montón de referencias culturales. No digo esto como algo negativo: son estas cosas las que hacen que Deadpool sea Deadpool, tanto como la constante ruptura de la cuarta pared, recurso que pocos personajes han explotado tanto como éste.

If we look closely - and it's not even necessary - we can find inconsistencies in the film's plot, some gaps and somewhat weak fragments in the narrative, but Deadpool & Wolverine is not a film designed to challenge a demanding audience or to amaze the most cinematic fans; it's a film with a lot of action and a lot of comedy that only seeks to make us have a good time and that achieves it thanks to those two elements. The action is good, almost excessive in terms of fights and blood. Again and again we see different characters face groups that outnumber them and of course at the beginning we see Deadpool fight Wolverine on a couple of occasions (one of the best scenes in the film) with a savagery as exciting as it is grotesque. The dark humour of the writers of the character is also at work, mocking the corporate decisions of the previous production company, including references to other stories, culture, well-known characters, and even to themselves with a wit and irony that are liberating. Deadpool is a universe in itself where nothing is forbidden and the filmmakers knew how to take advantage of this through jokes and the use of excessive language that in this case is not only the responsibility of the main character but also of other characters that appear in the plot.

Si ponemos la lupa - y ni siquiera hace falta tanto - podemos encontrar incongruencias en la trama de la película, algunos vacíos y fragmentos un tanto flojos en la narrativa, pero es que Deadpool & Wolverine no es una película pensada para desafiar un público exigente o maravillar a los más cinéfilos; se trata de una película de mucha acción y mucha comedia que sólo busca hacernos pasar un buen rato y que lo consigue gracias a esos dos elementos. La acción es buena, casi desmedida en términos de peleas y sangre. Una y otra vez vemos a diferentes personajes enfrentarse a grupos que los superan en número y por supuesto que al inicio vemos pelear en un par de ocasiones a Deadpool contra Wolverine (de las mejores escenas de la película) con un salvajismo tan emocionante como grotesco. Por su parte, el humor negro de los escritores del personaje hace de las suyas mofándose de las decisiones corporativas de la productora anterior, incluyendo referencias a otras historias, a la cultura, a personajes conocidos, y también a sí mismos con una agudeza y una ironía que resultan liberadoras. Deadpool es un universo en sí mismo en donde nada está prohibido y los realizadores supieron sacar partido de ello a través de los chistes y del uso de un lenguaje desmedido que en este caso no sólo queda a cargo del personaje protagonista sino también de otros personajes que aparecen en la trama.

Now, the main reason why I think the movie has been well received is because in the midst of its lack of seriousness (intentional, of course) it appeals a lot to nostalgia. Deadpool & Wolverine is a movie made by MCU fans for other MCU fans and although there are fans of all ages and backgrounds here, I would dare to say that the main target, or at least the audience that I think will appreciate this movie the most are millennials, men and women over 35 years old, who grew up watching the cartoons and who will be able to understand the vast majority of the jokes and references in the movie.

Ahora bien, el factor principal por el cual creo que la película ha sido bien recibida es porque en medio de su falta de seriedad (intencional, por supuesto) apela mucho a la nostalgia. Deadpool & Wolverine es una película hecha por fanáticos del MCU para otros fanáticos del MCU y aunque aquí hay de todas las edades y procedencias, me atrevería a decir que el target principal, o al menos el público que creo que agradecerá más esta película son los millenials, hombres y mujeres por sobre los 35 años, que crecieron viendo las caricaturas y que podrán entender la gran mayoría de los chistes y referencias dentro de la película.

And I'm not just saying this because of the cameos, but especially because of the music (songs from the late nineties, early 2000s) and some outstanding debts that are paid in the film, like the appearance of Gambit (a much loved character in the X-Men comics who however had never appeared in any film), Wolverine's mythical yellow suit (which we finally got to see on screen thanks to Disney), the return of some secondary characters that were incarnated before the MCU project started, like Electra or Blade, and the surprising return of Chris Evans to a film in the franchise. I liked the concept of The Void as a kind of purgatory where discarded mutants end up, I enjoyed the soundtrack, the cameos, most of the jokes, the breaking of the fourth wall (used and abused) and especially the main and supporting cast: Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, the beautiful and talented Emma Corrin, Jennifer Garner, Wesley Snipes, and even Matthew Macfadyen appears, the remembered Mr. Darcy from Pride & Prejudice with Keira Knightley. That Deadpool & Wolverine is a plot-deficient film is undeniable, but that appealing to nostalgia, violence and entertainment has worked well for them is unquestionable: less than a month after its release, it has grossed more than a billion dollars worldwide, becoming the second highest-grossing film of the year, surpassed only by Inside Out 2, have you seen it yet? Y no digo esto sólo por los cameos, sino sobre todo por la música (canciones de finales de los noventa, principios de los dos mil) y por algunas deudas pendientes que son pagadas en la película, como la aparición de Gambit (personaje muy querido en los cómics de los X-Men que sin embargo no había aparecido en ninguna película), el mítico traje amarillo de Wolverine (que finalmente pudimos ver en pantalla gracias a Disney) el regreso de algunos personajes secundarios que fueron encarnados antes de que iniciara el proyecto del MCU, como Electra o Blade, y el sorpresivo retorno de Chris Evans a una película de la franquicia. Me gustó el concepto de El Vacío como especie de purgatorio al que van a parar los mutantes descartados, disfruté el soundtrack, los cameos, la mayoría de los chistes, la ruptura de la cuarta pared (usada y abusada) y en especial el reparto principal y secundario: Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, la hermosa y talentosa Emma Corrin, Jennifer Garner, Wesley Snipes, y es que hasta aparece Matthew Macfadyen, el recordado Mr. Darcy de Pride & Prejudice con Keira Knightley. Que Deadpool & Wolverine es una película argumentalmente deficiente, es innegable, pero que el apelar a la nostalgia, la violencia y el entretenimiento les ha funcionado bien, es incuestionable: a menos de un mes de su estreno, ha recaudado más de mil millones de dólares a nivel mundial, convirtiéndose en la segunda película más taquillera del año, superada sólo por Inside Out 2, ¿ya fueron a verla? ¿qué les pareció?
