A couple of weeks ago I decided to end my subscriptions to some streaming platforms because, to be honest, I use them very little lately. I decided to stick with MUBI because it's more my style than the others, but just before my Amazon Prime Video subscription ended I decided to watch a mini series that a friend recommended to me.

Decidí quedarme con MUBI porque es más mi estilo que las demás, pero justo antes de que culminase mi suscripción a Amazon Prime Video decidí ver una mini serie que me recomendó una amiga.

Daisy Jones and The Six is a musical, dramatic, romantic and funny series that is based on the novel by writer Taylor Jenkins Reid (author of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, ) and tells the (fictional) story of the rise and fall of a rock band that recorded one of the best albums in history. Throughout ten episodes of approximately 50 minutes each, we follow the stories of various musicians living in Los Angeles in the 1960s and 1970s. Everyone's destinies will cross thanks to Teddy Price, a very important music producer who recognizes the talent in those who aspire to be part of music history. Of all of them, the central characters are the band The Six, made up of the Dunne brothers and some friends, and the Daisy Jones of the name of the series, a girl who discovers her passion for life in music, her writing streak, and who finds in her voice the way to communicate with the world.

Daisy Jones and The Six es una serie musical, dramática, romántica y divertida que se basa en la novela de la escritora Taylor Jenkins Reid (autora de Los siete maridos de Evelyn Hugo, ) y cuenta la historia (ficticia) del ascenso y la caída de una banda de rock que grabó uno de los mejores discos de la historia. A lo largo de diez episodios de aproximadamente 50 minutos de duración cada uno, seguimos las historias de varios músicos que hacen vida en Los Ángeles en la década de los años sesenta y setenta. Los destinos de todos se cruzarán gracias a Teddy Price, un productor musical muy importante que reconoce el talento en quienes aspiran ser parte de la historia de la música. De todos ellos, los personajes centrales son la banda The Six, integrada por los hermanos Dunne y algunos amigos y la Daisy Jones del nombre de la serie, una chica que descubre en la música su pasión por la vida, su vena de escritora y que encuentra en su voz la forma de comunicarse con el mundo.

One of the most entertaining aspects of the series is the non-linear time. The series is based on an interview that takes place twenty years after the separation of the band and intersperses past and present. The other interesting aspect is the polyphony. Through these interviews we get to know the testimonies of all those involved and in this contrast of opinions, confessions and secrets that come to light, it is the viewer himself who must choose what to believe.

Uno de los aspectos más entretenidos de la serie es el tiempo no lineal. La serie parte de una entrevista que se realiza veinte años después de la separación de la banda y va intecalando pasado y presente. El otro aspecto interesante es la polifonía. A través de esas entevistas vamos conociendo los testimonios de todos los involucrados y en ese contraste de opiniones, confesiones y secretos que salen a la luz es el propio espectador quien debe elegir qué creer.

Bill Dune (Sam Claflin)

I really liked the costumes, typical of the time, and how they reflected the different musical genres that were prominent at that time. There is Rock, yes, but also Pop, some Folk, Country, Disco, Jazz, Blues, different characters, different scenes and different episodes that explore different rhythms. However, in my opinion, I believe that when it came to generating the musical identity of the leading band, this variety played against it, since there are several songs that came from the same band, from the same album and written at the same time, have very different sounds. I would say that the most direct influence for the sound of Daisy Jones and The Six is ​​Fleetwood Mac, but other songs sound a little different, there are some keyboards that remind me of Deep Purple, some ballads that seem more like Joan Báez, etc, and I think that although there are very good songs in the band's repertoire it is hard to make believe that they were all composed by the same people (besides that some arrangements and structures are more typical of more modern music and not so much that of then).

Me gustó mucho el vestuario, propio de la época, y cómo reflejaron los distintos géneros musicales destacados en ese tiempo. Hay Rock, sí, pero también, Pop, algo de Folk, Country, Disco, Jazz, Blues, diferentes personajes, diferentes escenas y diferentes episodios que exploran diferentes ritmos. Sin embargo, en mi opinión, creo que a la hora de generar la identidad musical de la banda protagonista, esta variedad jugó en contra pues hay varias canciones que proviniedo de la misma banda, del mismo disco y escritas en la misma época, tienen sonidos muy diferentes. Diría que la influencia más directa para el sonido de Daisy Jones and The Six es Fleetwood Mac, pero otras canciones suenan algo diferentes, hay unos teclados que me recuerdan a Deep Purple, algunas baladas que parecen más bien de Joan Báez, etc, y creo que si bien hay muy buenas canciones en el repertorio de la banda es difícil hacer creer que todas fueron compuestas por las mismas personas (además de que algunos arreglos y estructuras son más propias de la música más moderna y no tanto la de entonces).

Apart from that and some differences between the series and the book, the series is entertaining. We can witness the beginnings of The Six, the childhood and adolescence of Daisy Jones, the loving relationships that are formed between the characters and above all witness the musical evolution of all of them, highlighting of course the way in which Bill Dune and Daisy Jones manage to push themselves to the limit and get the best out of each other through a complementary and competitive relationship, a fight of egos, but also a very strong physical, spiritual and personal attraction that they must keep on the sidelines due to professional and personal reasons. I liked the dynamic between them, even if it's a bit frustrating at times due to their arrogance, but it keeps the series alive for the most part. I also liked the final episode, there are a couple of plot twists, one that I liked and one that I didn't, and overall it's a series that I would recommend for those who enjoy musical stories, seventies music and limited series.

Al margen de eso y de algunas diferencias entre la serie y el libro, la serie es entretenida. Podemos asistir a los inicios de The Six, a la infancia y la adolescencia de Daisy Jones, las relaciones amorosas que se van formando entre los personajes y sobre todo ser testigos de la evolución musical de todos ellos, destacando por supuesto la forma en que Bill Dune y Daisy Jones logran presionarse al límite y sacar lo mejor del otro a través de una relación de coplemento y competencia, una pelea de egos, pero también una atracción física, espiritual y personal muy fuerte que deben mantener al margen debido a motivos profesionales y personales. Me gustó la dinámica entre ellos, aunque a veces resulte un poco frustrante debido a la soberbia de ambos, pero mantiene la serie viva durante la mayor parte. Me gustó también el episodio final, hay un par de plot twists, uno que me gustó y uno que no, y en general es una serie que recomendaría para quienes disfrutan las historias musicales, la música de los setenta y las series limitadas.

As additional information I tell you that Riley Keough, who plays Daisy Jones, is the daughter of Lisa Marie Presley and granddaughter of Elvis Presley himself. That must be why music runs through her veins and she does it very well in the series; in fact, the voices we hear on the recorded songs are those of Riley and Sam Claflin, so it can be said without a doubt that they have a talent for it.
