Last year the internet exploded when the first images of this film appeared, showing Zendaya in the middle of two men kissing her neck, one on each side. Then we were able to see the promotional trailers and understand a little more about the context of the film, but the scene remained fixed in the collective imagination and aroused the curiosity of film lovers who had to wait until this month to learn the whole story.

El año pasado el internet explotó cuando aparecieron las primeras imágenes de esta película en las que se mostraba a Zendaya en medio de dos hombres que besaban su cuello, uno a cada lado. Luego pudimos ver los avances promocionales y entender un poco más del contexto de la película, pero la escena quedó fijada en el imaginario colectivo y despertó la curiosidad de los amantes del cine que tuvieron que esperar hasta este mes para poder conocer toda la historia.

Challengers is a romantic and sports drama directed by Luca Guadagnino (Suspiria, Call Me By Your Name, Bones and All) that tells the story of a rivalry in which the line from love to hate is extremely thin. Art Donaldson (Mike Faist) and Patrick Zweig (Josh O'Connor) are two promising young American tennis players who have been playing and winning minor tournaments for several years. They are best friends and support each other in everything, they even joke when they have to face each other in a final. Art is more shy, methodical and seems to take tennis more seriously. Patrick, for his part, is somewhat more disordered, free, spontaneous, irreverent and although he seems to play a little better than Art, he doesn't demonstrate his friend's commitment to the sport. However, despite their differences, they have a close bond of brotherhood... until Tashi Duncan (Zendaya) appears in their lives. Tashi is the greatest promise of young tennis in the country. Think of a young Serena Williams, but in this case Tashi's family has money and she, although she doesn't yet play at a professional level, already has a contract with Adidas and the whole world expects her to leave university tennis to go compete in the big leagues tournaments. Tashi is not only a great player but she's also a young woman who is attractive to anyone, including Art... and Patrick.

Challengers es un drama romántico y deportivo dirigido por Luca Guadagnino (Suspiria, Call Me By Your Name, Bones and All) que cuenta la historia de una rivalidad en la que la línea del amor al odio es extremadamente delgada. Art Donaldson (Mike Faist) y Patrick Zweig (Josh O'Connor) son dos jóvenes promesas del tenis estadounidense que llevan varios años jugando y ganando torneos menores. Son mejores amigos y se apoyan en todo, incluso se toman en broma cuando tienen que enfrentarse en una final. Art es más tímido, metódico y pareciera tomarse el tenis más en serio. Patrick, por su parte, es algo más desordenado, libre, espontáneo, irreverente y aunque pareciera jugar un poco mejor que Art, no demuestra el compromiso de su amigo hacia el deporte. Sin embargo, a pesar de sus diferencias, tienen un estrecho lazo de hermandad... hasta que aparece Tashi Duncan (Zendaya) en sus vidas. Tashi es la mayor promesa del tenis joven del país. Piensen en una joven Serena Williams, pero en este caso la familia de Tashi tiene dinero y ella, aunque aún no juega a nivel profesional, ya tiene contrato con Adidas y el mundo entero espera que deje el tenis universitario para ir a competir en los grandes torneos. Tashi no es sólo una gran jugadora sino que además es una joven atractiva para cualquier persona, inlcuidos Art... y Patrick.

So, in some way, a kind of competition begins between the boys that will increase in intensity as time passes and certain events develop that will change - perhaps forever - the relationships between them and also that of each one of them with Tashi, because she also develops feelings for both of them, feelings that fluctuate over time.

Así que, de alguna manera, comienza entre los chicos una especie de competencia que irá aumentando en intensidad conforme pase el tiempo y se vayan desarrollando ciertos acontecimientos que cambiarán - tal vez para siempre - las relaciones entre ellos y también la de cada uno de ellos con Tashi, porque ella también desarrolla sentimientos hacia los dos, sentimientos que van fluctuando con el tiempo.

Now, the film is also a sports story. There are tennis tournaments, matches, trophies and a good part of the plot revolves around that and the future that everyone hopes for the three boys and that not all of them are going to get, for one reason or another. At times it seems that tennis gives additional tension to the relationships between them; but then it seems to be the other way around, as if the sexual, loving, and emotional tension between the three enhanced or reinforced the competitiveness on the field. That is to say that in Challengers tennis is indivisible from love. Added to this are the excellent performances of the protagonists, a brutal soundtrack with fast-paced and sensual techno pieces by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (who have already won the Oscar together twice for their work in The Social Network and Soul), the good direction of Luca Guadagnino and the script by a newcomer, Justin Kuritzkes, (who is preparing the adaptation of the novel Queer by William Burroughs, a film that will also be directed by Guadagnino). In my opinion, one of the strong points of this film is the non-linear time. Challengers begins with Art, Patrick and Tashi in their thirties, then shows them at eighteen when they met and from there it alternates between the present and different moments from their pasts with enough intelligence to leave questions that will be answered later, either for something that happened and that we did not know or for something that is going to happen today.

Ahora bien, la película es también una historia deportiva. Hay torneos de tenis, partidos, trofeos y una buena parte de la trama gira en torno a eso y al futuro que todos esperan para los tres chicos y que no todos van a conseguir, por una razón u otra. Por momentos pareciera que el tenis le da una tensión adicional a las relaciones entre ellos; pero luego pareciera ser al revés, como si la tensión sexual, amorosa, emocional entre los tres potenciara o reforzara la competitividad sobre la cancha. Es decir que en Challengers el tenis es indivisible del amor. A ello se suman las excelentes actuaciones de los protagonistas, una banda sonora brutal con piezas techno de mucho ritmo y mucha sensualidad a cargo de Trent Reznor y Atticus Ross (quienes ya ganaron, juntos, el Oscar dos veces por sus trabajos en The Social Network y Soul), la buena dirección de Luca Guadagnino y el guión de un debutante, Justin Kuritzkes, (quien está preparando la adaptación de la novela Queer de William Burroughs, película que también será dirigida por Guadagnino). En mi opinión, uno de los puntos fuertes de esta cinta es el tiempo no lineal. Challengers comienza con Art, Patrick y Tashi en sus treinta, luego los muestra a los dieciocho cuando se conocieron y a partir de allí va alternando entre el presente y diferentes momentos de sus pasados con la suficiente inteligencia como para dejar preguntas que serán contestadas luego, ya sea por algo que ocurrió y que no sabíamos o por algo que va a ocurrir en el hoy.

Art & Tashi

From all of this a powerful mix emerges that may have some flaws depending on the taste of some people, but they are not serious enough to condemn the rest of a film in which the centerpiece is the one that is right in the middle of the rivalry between Art and Patrick. They are the ones who face each other again and again on the court, but the star of Challengers is Tashi.

De todo ello surge una mezcla poderosa que puede tener algunas falencias dependiendo del gusto de algunas personas, pero que no son lo suficientemente graves como para condenar el resto de una película en la que la pieza central es esa que está justo en medio de la rivalidad de Art y Patrick. Son ellos quienes se enfrentan una y otra vez en la cancha, pero la estrella de Challengers es Tashi.

There are moments of tension, laughter, tears, arguments, complaints, defeat, regrets, fear, love, sex, violence, friendship, recognition... the emotional charge of the film is varied, explosive and captivating. Of the films I have seen in the cinema this year, this is one of the ones I have enjoyed the most, it has a rhythm that doesn't let up and keeps you tense and attentive from start to finish. The plot twists are well placed in the script and cause a resizing of what was known up to that point. Some people may find the POV (Point Of View), the slow motion shots, or even those sequences in which we seem to see the game from the perspective of the ball being hit from one side to the other, a little uncomfortable to see; and perhaps some more traditionalists and puritans may be uncomfortable with the sensual and sexual aspects of the relationships between the protagonists, but it's undeniable that Challengers is one of the best films ever made about any sport. The central game, which is the ultimate combat between Art and Patrick, has truly exciting sequences and grows in tension and emotion until it leads us to that ending that I think is genius on the part of the film's makers, but will undoubtedly bother more than one, have any of you seen this movie? what did you think? Hay momentos de tensión, risas, lágrimas, discusiones, reclamos, derrota, arrepentimientos, miedo, amor, sexo, violencia, amistad, reconocimiento... la carga emocional de la película es variada, explosiva y atrapante. De las películas que he visto en el cine este año, esta una de las que más he disfrutado, tiene un ritmo que no afloja y te mantiene en tensión y atención de inicio a fin. Los plot twists están bien ubicados en el guión y provocan una redimensión de lo conocido hasta ese momento. Puede que a algunas personas les parezcan algo incómodas de ver los POV (Point Of View), las tomas en cámara lenta, o incluso esas secuencias en las que pareciéramos ver el partido desde la perspectiva de la pelota que es golpeada de un lado al otro de la red; y quizás algunos más tradicionalistas y puritanos se incomoden con los aspectos sensuales y sexuales de las relaciones entre los protagonistas, pero es innegable que Challengers es una de las mejores películas que se han hecho sobre deporte alguno. El juego central, ese que viene a ser el combate máximo entre Art y Patrick, tiene secuencias verdaderamente emocionantes y va creciendo en tensión y emoción hasta conducirnos a ese final que me parece una genialidad de parte de los realizadores de la película, pero que sin duda molestará a más de uno, ¿alguno de ustedes ha visto esta película? ¿qué les pareció?
