In Venezuela we have many ways to emphatically reject the stories that someone tells us and that seem too implausible to be real, but one of the most famous expressions - although I recognize that its use has decreased in recent times - is "now tell me one (story) of cowboys", alluding to the far-fetched adventures that the protagonists of these types of stories experience with assaults on moving trains, shootouts of two against hundreds and endless horseback rides towards the dawn.

En Venezuela tenemos muchas formas de rechazar enfáticamente las historias que alguien nos cuenta y que nos parecen muy inverosímiles para ser reales, pero una de las expresiones más famosas - aunque reconozco que su uso ha disminuido en los últimos tiempos - es "ahora cuéntame una de vaqueros", aludiendo a las rebuscadas peripecias que viven los protagonistas de ese tipo de historias con asaltos a trenes en marcha, tiroteos de dos contra cientos y cabalgatas infinitas hacia el amanecer.

However, in many countries, including of course the United States, cowboy movies, or westerns, are historically and culturally important and are adventures often based on legendary characters that did exist, such as Billy the Kid, or as the protagonists of this film that, although it cannot be said that this is their biography, did exist at the end of the 19th century in the USA: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Played by two greats in Hollywood history, Paul Newman and Robert Redford, these young gunmen are part of a gang that is dedicated to robbing trains and banks in the state of Wyoming. Butch is kind of the boss of the gang. He's charismatic, possesses some leadership qualities and almost always has an optimistic mood. Sundance Kid, Butch's inseparable companion, is younger and has excellent aim, which has earned him great fame throughout the Old West. One day, after a train robbery goes wrong, the gang disbands. Some members are killed by the authorities and the survivors manage to flee, splitting into two pairs, one of which is Butch and The Kid who decide to continue together. With the Sheriff getting closer and the possibility of prison or death more and more real, Butch convinces his friend to go far away, to a country where there is a lot of gold and minerals and where they can continue making what they know how to do best, a country in the south of the continent, a small country called Bolivia.

Sin embargo, en muchos países, incluido por supuesto los EEUU, las películas de vaqueros, o westerns, son histórica y culturalmente importantes y se trata de aventuras muchas veces basadas en legendarios personajes que sí existieron como Billy the Kid, o como los protagonistas de esta película que, aunque no se puede decir que esta sea su biografía, sí existieron a finales del siglo XIX en los EEUU: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Encarnados por dos grandes de la historia de Hollywood, Paul Newman y Robert Redford, estos jóvenes pistoleros forman parte de una banda que se dedica a asaltar los trenes y los bancos del estado de Wyoming. Butch es algo así como el jefe de la banda. Es carismático, posee algunas cualidades de liderazgo y tiene un ánimo optimista casi siempre. Sundance Kid, el inseparable compañero de Butch, es más joven y tiene una excelente puntería, la cual le ha labrado gran fama a lo largo y ancho del viejo oeste. Un día, después que un asalto al tren sale mal, la banda se disuelve. Algunos miembros son asesinados por las autoridades y los sobrevivientes logran huir, desplegándose en dos duplas, una de las cuales es la de Butch y The Kid que deciden continuar juntos. Con el Sheriff cada vez más cerca y la posibilidad de la prisión o la muerte cada vez más real, Butch convence a su amigo de que se vayan lejos, a un país en el que hay mucho oro y minerales y en el que podrán seguir haciendo lo que mejor saben hacer, un país al sur del continente, un pequeño país llamado Bolivia.

But in order to get there, it will be necessary to first leave the United States and to put up a better facade there's a third element that decides to join them on the journey: Etta Place (the beautiful Katharine Ross), a school teacher who knows the two bandits and has a lot of affection and appreciation for them in what seems like a somewhat strange relationship because she's not exactly anyone's partner, but she sleeps with both of them and somehow both gunmen seem to have no problem with that. This is a very risky position for the time of the film (1969), but the truth is that these three romantic outlaws put their efforts into reaching Bolivia together.

Pero para poder llegar allí, será necesario primero salir de los EEUU y para montar una mejor fachada hay un tercer elemento que decide unírseles en el viaje: Etta Place (la hermosísima Katharine Ross), una maestra de escuela que conoce a los dos bandidos y que les tiene mucho cariño y aprecio en lo que parece una relación algo extraña porque no es exactamente la pareja de ninguno, pero se acuesta con los dos y de alguna forma ambos pistoleros parecen no tener problema con eso. Se trata de una posición bien arriesgada para la época de la película (1969), pero lo cierto es que estos tres forajidos románticos ponen su empeño en lograr llegar juntos a Bolivia.

Like a good western, in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid we have assaults on moving trains, shootouts between the outlaws and the authorities, pistol duels, poker games, escapes on horseback through the hills in the outskirts of the city, nights spent outdoors, plans that go wrong, strokes of luck, dreams that move the characters, desires for redemption, dangers, the shadow of tragedy floating over the protagonists, charm, mischief, cunning, funny moments in charge of certain dialogues and the typical visits to brothels of the time where the heroes rest from hard work in the voluptuous company of women who, like them, also live outside the law. Many scenes filmed outdoors, showy stunts and a story with a good rhythm, manage to form a good framework for a good Western, but the success and significance of this film, one of the most famous in the history of the genre (in 2008 the American Film Institute classified it as the seventh best western in history), it is due to the fame and acting quality of its protagonists. Paul Newman had just made Cool Hand Luke, Hombre, Hud, The Prize, he had starred in Otto Preminger's epic Exodus, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof alongside Elizabeth Taylor, The Long, Hot Summer with Joanne Woodward and Orson Welles and Torn Curtain, a film directed by Alfred Hitchcock, alongside Julie Andrews. Newman was the man of the moment.

Como buena película de vaqueros, en Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid tenemos asaltos a trenes en marcha, tiroteos entre los forajidos y las autoridades, duelos de pistola, partidas de póker, fugas a caballo atravesando las colinas en las afueras de la ciudad, noches pasadas a la intemperie, planes que salen mal, golpes de suerte, sueños que mueven a los personajes, deseos de redención, peligros, la sombra de la tragedia flotando por sobre los protagonistas, encanto, picardía, astucia, momentos divertidos a cargo de ciertos diálogos y las típicas visitas a burdeles de la época en donde los héroes reposan de una dura faena en la voluptuosa compañía de mujeres que, como ellos, también viven al margen de la ley. Muchas escenas filmadas en exteriores, acrobacias vistosas y una historia con buen ritmo, logran conformar un buen marco para un buen western, pero el éxito y la trascendencia de esta película, una de las más famosas en la historia del género (en el 2008 el American Film Institute lo catalogó como el séptimo mejor western de la historia), se debe a la fama y la calidad actoral de sus protagonistas. Paul Newman venía de hacer Cool Hand Luke, Hombre, Hud, The Prize, había protagonizado la épica Exodus de Otto Preminger, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof junto a Elizabeth Taylor, The Long, Hot Summer con Joanne Woodward y Orson Welles y Torn Curtain, una película dirigida por Alfred Hitchcock, junto a Julie Andrews. For his part, Robert Redford had just worked in The Chase with Marlon Brando, in Barefoot in the Park with Jane Fonda and from starring in This Property is Condemned by Sydney Pollack with a script - among others - by Francis Ford Coppola. Newman was the star of the moment and Redford a rising star. They were joined by the talented Katharine Ross, who had already appeared in The Graduate and who would later return to play teacher Etta Place in the spin-off of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid called Wanted: The Sundance Woman.

In addition to excellent direction, there is a very good script that owes a lot, of course, to the story of Alice Munro (included in her 2001 book Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage), a wonderful writer who manages to create complete universes, complex and accessible in the few pages of her stories (she also wrote novels, but her short stories gave her greater significance). And we also have the excellent performance of Julie Christie as Fiona. I don't know if Julie's face, or her name, is familiar to you, but she is one of the most important actresses in the history of cinema. Julie Christie is the Diana Scott of Darling (a role that won her the Oscar); Lara Antipova from Doctor Zhivago; Thetis, the mother of Achilles (Brad Pitt) in Troy and many other characters that earned her important recognition. With her role as Fiona in Away From Her she managed to win the Golden Globe, the SAG and the Film Critics Award, so the quality of her performance and the story are guaranteed. I recommend watching this movie for the things it makes you think and also to see love from another moment in our lives, old age, as can be seen in The Bridge of Madison County with Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood, do you remember any other movie that shows love in old age? Combinemos entonces esa calidad actoral con la dirección de George Roy Hill, quien cuatro años más tarde volvería a reunir a Newman y Redford en The Sting, consiguiendo sus dos películas más recordadas de la mano de esta mágica dupla; sumemos al guionista, un tal William Goldman que ya había hecho el guión para Harper y que en los próximos años escribiría los guiones de Marathon Man, All the President's Men (con la que ganó su segundo Oscar), A Bridge Too Far, The Princess Bride y Misery, entre muchas otras; pongamos finalmente en la mezcla la música del icónico Burt Bacharach quien junto a Hal David escribió la canción "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head" para esta película (Oscar para la canción y para el soundtrack) y tendremos entonces una excelente película y una pieza de la historia del cine norteamericano. Aunque lo suyo no sean las películas de vaqueros, creo que pueden disfrutar de Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid y de un género que resulta divertido, vistoso y culturalmente interesante. Si quieren probar alguno más reciente, también está The Unforgiven de Clint Eastwood junto a Gene Hackman y Morgan Freeman; y si lo que quieren es uno con una historia más actual, como de ladrones de banco en el oeste en el siglo XXI, entonces les recomiendo Hell or High Water con Jeff Bridges, Chris Pine y Ben Foster, ¿han visto alguna de estas? ¿cuál es su western favorito?
