I had had this movie on my list for a while, even though I didn't know anything about its plot; All I knew was that it was starring Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara who I saw working together in A Ghost Story, a movie I really liked but it was released after this one. Finally, a couple of days ago I was able to see it on MUBI.

Hacía tiempo que tenía esta película en mi lista, aunque no sabía nada sobre su trama; lo único que sabía era que estaba protagonizada por Casey Affleck y Rooney Mara a quienes vi trabajar juntos en A Ghost Story, película que me gustó bastante pero que fue estrenada después de esta. Finalmente, hace un par de días pude verla en MUBI.

Ain't Them Bodies Saints is an American film directed by David Lowery that could be classified as a neo western. Set in Texas in the 1970s, we follow a criminal couple, Ruth (Mara) and Bob (Affleck), on a job gone wrong. In the first minutes of the film, the narration is non-linear and several things get mixed up, among them an argument between Bob and Ruth, the news that she's pregnant, the job that goes wrong and a crossfire with the police in which a colleague of theirs is killed and a policeman is injured. In the midst of this commotion and faced with the possibility of not being able to flee, Bob makes the decision to turn himself in and take the shots, which is why he's imprisoned, while Ruth is released. But before all that happens, Bob asks Ruth to wait for him, that he will get out of prison and look for her to be happy together. So yes, it is a western, a cops and robbers story, a drama, but above all a love story.

Ain't Them Bodies Saints es una película estadounidense dirigida por David Lowery que podría ser catalogado como un neo western. En el Estado de Texas, en la década de los años setenta, seguimos a una pareja de delincuentes, Ruth (Mara) y Bob (Affleck), en un trabajo que sale mal. En los primeros minutos del film la narración es no lineal y se van mezclando varias cosas, entre ellas una discusión entre Bob y Ruth, la noticia de que ella está embarazada, el trabajo que sale mal y un fuego cruzado con la policía en el que cae abatido un compañero de ellos y un policía resulta herido. En medio de esa conmoción y ante la posibilidad de no poder huir, Bob toma la decisión de entregarse y adjudicarse los disparos, razón por la cual es encarcelado, mientras Ruth queda libre. Pero antes de que todo eso suceda, Bob le pide a Ruth que lo espere, que él saldrá de prisión y la buscará para ser felices juntos. Entonce sí, es un western, una historia de policías y ladrones, un drama, pero sobre todo una historia de amor.

The film progresses, time passes, Ruth has her daughter and walks away from the life of crime she led with Bob, while he sends love letters, desperate, dreaming of the day when he will be released from prison and finally meet his daughter. I don't advance more of the plot so that you can be surprised with certain events that happen later.

La película avanza, el tiempo pasa, Ruth tiene a su hija y se aleja de la vida de delincuencia que llevaba con Bob, mientras él envía cartas de amor, desesperado, soñando con el día en que saldrá de prisión y conocerá por fin a su hija. No adelanto más de la trama para que puedan sorprenderse con ciertos eventos que suceden luego.

What I can and want to talk about is the other aspects of the film. The performances are excellent, not only those of the leading couple but also that of the other members of the cast, among whom Keith Carradine stands out, a small role by Rami Malek and a great performance by Ben Foster, who this time is on the side of the law and not on the side of the outlaws as he did in Hell or High Water with Chris Pine. Foster plays a secondary, but important role here and manages to generate sympathy and compassion in the viewer. The editing of the film is also very well done, the same story told in a more ordinary order would not have achieved the same result, but I think my two favorite things about the film are: the photography by Bradford Young who won the category at the Sundance Festival (Young was nominated for an Oscar for his work in Arrival) and that balance between thriller, drama, western, crime and romance. In the development of events, the love between Bob and Ruth is as important as everything else, the jail, the robberies, the police and of course their daughter.

De lo que sí puedo y quiero hablar es de los demás aspectos de la película. Las actuaciones son buenísimas, no sólo las de la pareja protagonista sino también la de los demás miembros del elenco, entre quienes destacan, Keith Carradine, un pequeño papel de Rami Malek y una gran actuación de Ben Foster, quien en esta oportunidad está del lado de la ley y no del lado de los forajidos como lo hizo en Hell or High Water junto a Chris Pine. Foster realiza aquí un papel secundario, pero importante y logra generar simpatía y compasión al espectador. El montaje de la película también está muy bien realizado, la misma historia contada en un orden más ordinario no habría logrado el mismo resultado, pero creo que mis dos cosas favoritas del film son: la fotografía de Bradford Young que ganó en la categoría en el Festival de Sundance (Young estuvo nominado al Oscar por su trabajo en Arrival) y ese balance entre thriller, drama, western, crimen y romance. En el desarrollo de los eventos el amor entre Bob y Ruth es tan importante como todo lo demás, la cárcel, los robos, la policía y por supuesto su hija.

One almost always thinks of upset or doomed loves as those who cannot be together despite wanting to, who are forced to separate or who cannot be together due to things of fate, but in Ain't Them Bodies Saints the condemnation comes to them by their own decisions and despite having led an erratic life, this couple loves each other and wants to be together. Empathizing with the criminal in a movie may be an apology for crime, but it's impossible not to develop sympathy for Bob and Ruth (even if he's a little rough and she's a little submissive) and inevitably not wanting them to be able to somehow meet again sometime to raise their little daughter together, will they succeed? I recommend you watch the movie to see how it ends and I ask you, are there any modern westerns that you liked? I read you in the comments.

Casi siempre se piensa en los amores contrariados o condenados como aquellos que no pueden estar juntos a pesar de querer, que son forzados a separarse o que no pueden estar juntos por cosas del destino, pero en Ain't Them Bodies Saints la condena les llega por sus propias decisiones y a pesar de haber llevado una vida errática, esta pareja se ama y quieren estar juntos. Empatizar con el criminal en una película puede ser una apología al delito, pero es imposible no desarrollar simpatía por Bob y Ruth (aunque él sea algo tosco y ella un poco sumisa) e inevitable no querer que puedan reunirse de nuevo de alguna manera en algún momento para criar juntos a su pequeña hija, ¿lo conseguirán? Les recomiendo que vean la película para ver cómo termina y les pregunto, ¿hay algún western moderno que les haya gustado? Los leo en los comentarios.
