There were many great actresses in the fifties and sixties and several of them have been elevated to the cinematographic Olympus for the significance of their performances and their lives. Katharine Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly, Rita Hayworth, the list is long, but without a doubt one of the most remembered names, even today, is that of the Belgian actress Audrey Hepburn, who was born exactly on a day like today, May 4th, but 95 years ago.

However, despite being an icon of the golden era of Hollywood, I know that there are people who, although they have heard the name and recognize her face, haven't seen any of her films. So, on the occasion of her birthday, I am going to recommend some places where you can start touring and discover her vast filmography. I haven't seen all of her films, so I couldn't speak about her best stories with certainty, but after seeing more than a dozen of her films I have seen her as a nun in The Nun's Story, a model by accident in Funny Face, embodying the myth of Pygmalion in My Fair Lady, teacher at a girls' boarding school in The Children's Hour, blind wife in Wait Until Dark and in each role I have enjoyed her talent for acting, dancing, singing, French and incomparable charm onscreen. There were actresses of the time with greater achievements (Audrey only won one Oscar, for example), but she had a grace, something in her way of acting (and being) that makes her unforgettable. In each of the stories that I've seen I've been grateful for its presence, especially in those that, due to script or execution, left much to be desired and just as sometimes I have had the desire to see a film of a certain genre or by a director, I also suddenly felt the desire to see an Audrey Hepburn movie, something that doesn't happen very often when it comes to actors and actresses.

Sin embargo, a pesar de ser un ícono de la era dorada de Hollywood, sé que hay personas que, aunque han oído el nombre y reconocen su rostro, no han visto ninguna de sus películas. En cada una de las historias que he visto he agradecido su presencia, especialmente en aquellas que, por guión o por ejecución, dejaban mucho que desear y así como a veces he tenido el deseo de ver una película de cierto género o de algún director, también he sentido de repente las ganas de ver una película de Audrey Hepburn, algo que no suele ocurrirme con mucha frecuencia cuando se trata de actores y actrices.

Now, for those who haven't yet seen any of her films, I am going to recommend three, in no order of preference and without meaning to say that they are her best performances or Audrey's best films, but three stories that can give a sample of her talent and which are at the same time memorable places in her filmography starting, of course, with the role that is perhaps the most remembered, that of Holly Golightly in the adaptation of Breakfast at Tiffany's by Truman Capote.

Ahora bien, para quienes no hayan visto aún ninguna de sus películas, voy a recomendar tres, sin orden de preferencia y sin querer decir que sean sus mejores actuaciones o las mejores películas de Audrey, sino tres historias que pueden dar una muestra de su talento y que son a la vez lugares memorables de su filmografía empezando, por supuesto, por el rol que es tal vez el más recordado, el de Holly Golightly en la adaptación de Breakfast at Tiffany's de Truman Capote.

As Holly Golightly

Holly is that beautiful young New Yorker that you have seen in thousands of images and posters who wears a tight black dress with diamonds on her head. You may not have seen the movie, but you know what image I'm talking about. Holly is somewhat extravagant, cheerful, dreamy and less restrained than other women played by Audrey. I must confess that the adaptation of the book did not convince me very much, but I did feel that Hepburn perfectly embodied the spirit of her protagonist. There are many memorable scenes in this film, such as Holly having breakfast in front of a jewelry store at the beginning, or sitting in the window singing Moon River (song that won the Oscar), one of my favorite songs from any movie. If you haven't seen any of Audrey Hepburn's filmography, this is a good place to start. Then you could continue with many others, but the logical option would be to review Roman Holiday, where she played Anne, a Central European princess who visits Rome, but who escapes to visit the city like a normal person and knows how American journalist who accompanies her (played by Gergory Peck, one of my favorite actors of the time as well). This role was Audrey's first major leading role and earned her the Oscar for Best Actress when she was not yet 25 years old. Ana is a character that allows us to see the sweetest, dreamiest and most tender side of a very young Audrey Hepburn who can embody an anonymous citizen with equal charm as a member of royalty.

Holly es esa bella joven neoyorquina que han visto en miles de imágenes y afiches que lleva un ceñido vestido negro con diamantes en la cabeza. Pueden no haber visto la película, pero saben de qué imagen les estoy hablando. Holly es algo extravagante, alegre, soñadora y menos contenida que otras mujeres interpretadas por Audrey. Debo confesar que la adaptación del libro no me convenció mucho, pero sí sentí que Hepburn encarnó perfectamente el espíritu de su protagonista. Hay muchas escenas memorables de esta cinta, como el de Holly desayunando frente a una joyería al inicio, o sentada en la ventana cantando Moon River (canción que ganó el Oscar), una de mis canciones favoritas de película alguna. Si no han visto nada de la filmografía de Audrey Hepburn, este es un buen lugar para empezar. Luego podrían seguir por muchas otras, pero la opción lógica sería revisar Roman Holiday, en donde encarnó a Ana, una princesa centroeuropea que visita Roma, pero que se escapa para visitar la ciudad como una persona normal y conoce acun periodista americano que la acompaña (interpretado por Gergory Peck, uno de mis actores favoritos de la época también). Este papel fue el primer gran protagónico de Audrey y le valió el Oscar a Mejor Actriz cuando aún no tenía 25 años. Ana es un personaje que nos permite ver el lado más dulce, soñador y tierno de una jovensísima Audrey Hepburn que puede encarnar con igual encanto a una ciudadana anónima que a un miembro de la realeza.

And as a third recommendation... it's difficult because I want to say many titles and perhaps Sabrina alongside Humphrey Bogart would be the most obvious choice, but I think there are common things in that role and in that of Roman Holiday. I could recommend something more dramatic, like The Children's Hour or a Hitckcock-esque thriller like Charade (with Cary Grant), but I'm going to go with one of her musicals, a genre that she also represented on screen, which is Funny Face.

Y como tercera recomendación... es difícil porque quiero decir muchos nombres y quizás Sabrina junto a Humphrey Bogart sería la opción más obvia, pero creo que hay cosas comunes en ese papel y en el de Roman Holiday. Podría recomendar algo más dramático, como The Children's Hour o un thriller a lo Hitckcock como Charade (junto a Cary Grant), pero me voy a ir con uno de sus musicales, genero que también representó en la pantalla, que es Funny Face.

As Jo Stockton

In it, Audrey plays Jo Stockton, a modest bookstore assistant who is transformed into a magazine model thanks to the expert eye of a renowned photographer. It's a kind of Cinderella story, but what I like about this role is that you get to see her act, sing and especially dance alongside Fred Astaire, an exceptional dancer, and we get to see some of the most memorable sequences and takes of the history of Hollywood and Hepburn's filmography, including one that you will remember from somewhere else because La La Land gives it a brief nod. Beyond those three you can review almost any of her films. I don't recommend starting with Green Mansions (although the film talks about Venezuela and shows the Orinoco) or The Unforgiven (even though Burt Lancaster is there), they are not the best films in my opinion, but there are many others, from her beginnings with secondary roles like Secret People, romances like Paris When It Sizzles or Love in the Afternoon or epic stories like the adaptation of Tolstoy's War and Peace (which I haven't seen yet). Audrey Hepburn was, is and will be one of the icons of Hollywood and although she died more than thirty years ago, her legacy as a person and as an actress, her grace, sweetness, charm, talent and that presence that floods the screen and illuminates the room with the warmth of her smile and the bright of her eyes, she will live eternally in the memory of the world.
