Maravillas del cine cubano [Wonders of Cuban cinema]
I know perfectly well that Cuban cinema is far from being the favorite of many; but although we are not a superpower on the subject, we have some pretty good films. I have recently seen several and I would like to share with you three of them that have a common denominator, the excellent film actor Jorge Perugorría in their leading roles.
Es un filme de 1993 dirigido por Tomás Gutiérrez Alea y Juan Carlos Tabío. La historia está basada en el cuento El Lobo, el bosque y el hombre nuevo del escritor cubano Senel Paz, quien también hizo la adaptación al guión cinematográfico. Narra la historia de dos jóvenes Diego y David. El primero es un artista religioso y homosexual, defensor de la cultura universal y la historia menos conocida de Cuba. El segundo es un joven militante comunista no tan culto, para nada religioso y con ideas conservadoras, que estudia Ciencias Sociales en la Universidad de La Habana. Se conocen y sus vidas se entrelazan desde la amistad y el respeto a las notables entre ellos; pero prevaleciendo siempre los puntos en común. La película, además, es una dura crítica a la rigidez con la que se vivía la política en esos tiempos por algunas personas y la hipocresía de otras (ejemplo, la de vigilancia). Véanla, este es uno de los más importantes clásicos del cine cubano.
STRAWBERRY AND CHOCOLATE:
It is a 1993 film directed by Tomás Gutiérrez Alea and Juan Carlos Tabio. The story is based on the story The Wolf, the Forest and the New Man by Cuban writer Senel Paz, who also adapted it into a film script. It tells the story of two young men Diego and David. The first is a religious and homosexual artist, defender of universal culture and the less known history of Cuba. The second is a young communist militant who is not so cultured, not at all religious and with conservative ideas, who studies Social Sciences at the University of Havana. They meet and their lives intertwine through friendship and respect for the notable differences between them; but common points always prevail. The film is also a harsh criticism of the rigidity with which politics was lived in those times by some people and the hypocrisy of others (for example, surveillance). Watch it, this is one of the most important classics of Cuban cinema.
Sin duda alguna una excelente comedia que refleja a través de todos sus personajes la buena y mala realidad cubana que se vivía en 1995 y que ha cobrado vigencia en la actualidad. Cuenta con un elenco de primer nivel Jorge Perugorría (Marino) interpretando al personaje principal, Mirta Ibarra (Gina) como la protagonista, y las excelentes actuaciones de Carlos Cruz, Raúl Eguren (Cándido) y Luis Alberto García. Al morir Yoyita, la tía de Gina, de forma inesperada de visita en Guantánamo comienza el traslado de sus restos mortales a La Habana. Acompañado al cadáver viajan hacia la capital Gina, su esposo quien es un funcionario de los servicios necrológicos y Cándido un antiguo amante de la fallecida. En el viaje se encuentran con los camioneros, Mariano ex alumno de Gina y Ramón su compañero de trabajo, desatándose así reencuentros inesperados y numerosos momentos divertidos. Nuevamente otra película que critica la decadencia de la sociedad cubana.
GUANTANAMERA:
Without a doubt an excellent comedy that reflects through all its characters the good and bad Cuban reality that was experienced in 1995 and that has become valid today. It has a first-class cast Jorge Perugorría (Marino) playing the main character, Mirta Ibarra (Gina) as the protagonist, and the excellent performances of Carlos Cruz, Raúl Eguren (Cándido) and Luis Alberto García. When Yoyita, Gina's aunt, dies unexpectedly while visiting Guantánamo, the transfer of her mortal remains to Havana begins. Accompanied by the corpse, Gina, her husband, who is an official in the obituary services, and Cándido, a former lover of the deceased, travel to the capital. On the trip they meet the truck drivers, Mariano, Gina's former student, and Ramón, her co-worker, thus unleashing unexpected reunions and numerous fun moments. Again another film that criticizes the decadence of Cuban society.
Es un largometraje de ficción realizado en el 2009 el cual fue dirigido por Juan Carlos Tabío y Arturo Arango. Esta comedia nos cuenta como en Yaragüey, un pequeño pueblo de ficción del oriente del país, los integrantes de la familia Castiñeiras reciben la noticia de que pueden recibir una herencia millonaria desequilibrándose así la vida de los Castiñeiras y de todo el pueblo, principalmente la de Bernardito (Jorge Perugorría) y su esposa Marthica (Annia Bú Maure). Todos tienen que dedicarse a los trámites de reclamación y muchos se endeudan desenfrenadamente con la convicción que recibirán la herencia. Traiciones, avaricias, desilusiones, fe y mucha simpatía rodean a esta trama.
THE HORN OF ABUNDANCE:
It is a fiction feature film made in 2009 which It was directed by Juan Carlos Tabío and Arturo Arango. This comedy tells us how in Yaragüey, a small fictional town in the east of the country, the members of the Castiñeiras family receive the news that they may receive a million-dollar inheritance, thus unbalancing the lives of the Castiñeiras and the entire town, mainly that of Bernardito (Jorge Perugorría) and his wife Marthica (Annia Bú Maure). Everyone has to dedicate themselves to the claim procedures and many go into rampant debt with the conviction that they will receive the inheritance. Betrayals, greed, disappointments, faith and a lot of sympathy surround this plot.
I highly recommend all three movies, they are the best of national cinema, which unfortunately has been in decline.
