My favourite historical film of all: The King's Speech (Review)

There are some films that simply connect with you the moment you see them, it happens to me many times that films or shows that are endorsed by many don't end up enchanting me or get past the first chapter for this reason, besides that in my opinion it is difficult to make a film that reviews a historical period without making mistakes or without exaggerating too much along the way, that's why the film I'm going to tell you about today is special.

The King's Speech is a film about how things that seem small to us, can shape the course of history later on, it seems to me that the ways in which a king addresses his subjects, especially when there are events that require unity and that the inhabitants feel well represented, that is why it is so fascinating how a king with a stammer can be fatal to a royal family.

That is the story of King George VI, even though the film first puts him first as one of the hereditary Dukes to the throne, this prince has had this condition practically from birth, most of the time he cannot string two complete sentences together because of his tics. His wife has tried every possible treatment and spatialist until she meets a then unknown expert in speech therapy.

The film narrates the different unconventional methods that this specialist uses to help the prince, as well as all the internal drama of the royal family when it is discovered that the current king is very ill and at any moment one of his two heirs will have to succeed him on the throne, I think there is also a good story there but the film is rather limited to tell us what happens between the prince, his wife and the specialist.

It is a film that I love to watch in its original language, mostly because the main performances as well as all the lines of dialogue that refer to the king and the condition he possesses are much better expressed in the original version. It is also what I consider to be a very English film, of course we are in England in the early 1900's but even so it seems to me that there is a conversation about the shots and scenes that sets this type of film apart from the American ones.

From here I'm going to talk with spoilers about the second half of the film.

After the departure and burial of the prince's father there is a dispute over who should be the leader of the nation, by this time there was already a prime minister but the King was something of a leader and what many went to when they needed someone to speak for them, and the condition that he would be the next King George VI of course weakened him to take on that position.

The now appointed George VI and Lionel Louge is the heart of the film, there are so many moments where he questions what it is to be a leader and how it is different from being a king, moments where the stuntman skips many of the customs of the royal family to prove a point or just to infuriate the already newly appointed king, I think a lot of the good scenes are partly that way thanks to the performances and dynamics of these two characters.

It touches on many themes of the times before the second world war, the traumas and the importance of trust, it is a film that touches on such a personal subject as stuttering I think it expresses something much greater, communication is our best weapon and when we master our voice, we can do wonders with it, it is a film that I recommend with my eyes closed and I hope you get to see it one day.

Hay algunas peliculas que simplemente conectan contigo al momento en el que las ves, me pasa muchas ceces que peliculas o shows que son avalados por muchos no terminan de encantarme o pasar del primer capitulo por esta razon, ademas de que a mi parecer es complicado hacer una pelicula que revise un periodo historico sin cometer fallos o sin exagerar demasiado por el camino, es por eso que la pelicula que hoy les voy a contar es especial.

El Discurso del Rey es un film sobre como cosas que parecen ser pequeñas para nosotros, pueden marcar el rumbo de la historia mas adelante, me parece que las formas en las que un rey se dirige a sus subditos, en especial cuando hay eventos que requieran de unidad y de que los habitantes se sientan bien representados, es por eso que es tan fascinante como un Rey con Tartamudez puede ser algo fatal para una familia real.

Esa es la historia del rey Jorge VI, aunque la pelicula primero lo pone primero como uno de los Duques herederos al trono, este principe tiene esa condicion practicamente desde su nacimiento, la mayoria del tiempo no puede hilar dos frases completas debido a sus tics. Su esposa ha tratado con todos los tratamientos y espacialistas posibles hasta que conoce a un por ese entonces desconocido experto en la terapia del lenguaje.

La pelicula narra los diferentes metodos no convencionales que usa este especialista para ayudar al principe, asi como todo el drama interno de la familia real cuando se descubre que el actual rey esta muy enfermo y en cualquier momento uno de sus dos herederos tendra que sucederle en el trono, creo que tambien hay una buena historia ahi pero la pelicula se limita bastante a contarnos lo que pasa entre el principe, su esposa y el especialista.

Es una pelicula que me encanta verla en su idioma original, mas que nada porque las actuaciones principales asi como todas las lineas de dialogo que se refieren al rey y a la condicion que posee se expresan mucho mejor en la version original. Es tambien lo que considero una pelicula bastante inglesa, por supuesto estamos en la Inglaterra de principios de los 1900 pero aun asi me parece que hay una conversacion sobre las tomas y escenas que desmarcan a este tipo de peliculas de las americanas.

A partir de aqui voy a hablar con spoiler sobre la segunda mitad del film.

Despues de la partida y el sepulcro del padre del principe se abre la disputa sobre quien tiene que ser el lider de la nacion, por ese entonces ya habia un primer ministro pero el Rey era algo asi como el lider y a lo que muchos iban cuando necesitaban a alguien que hablase por ellos, y la condicion de que seria el proximo Rey Jorge VI por supuesto que lo debilitaba para asumir ese cargo.

El ahora nombrado Jorge VI y Lionel Louge es el corazon de la pelicula, hay tantos momentos en donde se cuestiona lo que es ser un lider y como es diferente de ser un rey, momentos en donde el especialista se salta muchas de las costumbres de la familia real para probar un punto o solo para enfurecer al ya recien nombrado rey, creo que muchas de las buenas escenas son en parte asi gracias a las actuaciones y dinamicas de estos dos personajes.

Toca muchos temas de los momentos antes de la segunda guerra mundial, los traumas y la importancia de la confianza, es una pelicula que tocando un tema tan personal como lo es la tartamudez creo que expresa algo mucho mayor, la comunicacion es nuestra mejor arma y cuando dominamos nuestra voz, podemos hacer maravillas con ella, es un film que recomiendo con los ojos cerrados y espero puedan llegar a verlo algun dia.
