The Island
Ah man, look how young these guys look. Ewan McGregor and Scarlet Johansson, wow, so young. This reminds me of how good I looked when I was younger, I mean, not of these guys calibres, but damn wasn't it nice to look young and good?
That aside this was an amazing film. Psychologically a masterpiece. For someone to think up such a concept they would have had to have sat down and thought it out quite a bit; the way the characters interact with each other, the absolute psychotic to the point of viewing himself as a god the main doctor must be. As someone that deals with people regularly, it's quite amazing how it all worked out.
You see to keep them confined and controlled you need to make them fear the unknown, the unknown is death, the unknown is scary therefor you shouldn't venture there. The big gaurds with scary masks and big machine guns are here to protect you.
Humans are at our most vulnerable when we seek safety; we opt for the bigger stronger person to protect us, we see strength in numbers, and delegate the big decisions to the clan leader. Safety is almost always at the expense of discovery, curiosity, and independence.
This (as well as a good film) is a chilling portrayal of how humans act and can be herded like cattle when scared. Most probably wont see it that way, but as someone that's spent a life of studying this stuff, I've noticed this is a film that delves far deeper than just the outlining of a good story. It really uses some of our best traits: friendship, strength in numbers, loyalty, against us.
And that's what I liked about it, you know? It really got into the meat of things and how humans can be abused in many ways.
We start off our film with Licoln Six Echo (a strange name, but we roll with it) who was discovered out in the wilderness. The powers that be, brought him in and nursed him back to health. Now, young, and full of energy, and in some sort of building that's futuristic and very nice, he gets through his merry day just getting around with his daily business.
But he has dreams.
And he's curious. He wonders why survivors keep coming to his building. From where do they come? Why do they go to the Island? How is it set up this way. All these questions he has rolling in his head but no-one else seems to question any of it.
He has a really really good friend, Jordan Two Delta (played by Scarlett Johansson), with whom he shares his thoughts with, and they are almost a terrible twosome, getting into trouble together, always getting in close contact with each other (which isn't allowed), and they are as Forrest Gump would call it, "Like two peas in a pod."
But something happened. Lincoln Six Echo accidentally climbed to a part that he shouldn't have been in, and they witnessed them killing someone that was supposed to go to the island only the day before. All IS not what it seems. His fears weren't wrong, and..
Jordan Two Delta's turn to go to the Island is up next. His best friend and confidant...
Duch a really really expertly crafted storyline and narrative. I can't reommend this one enough to those that are interested in this sort of stuff!
