Life: As We May Not Know

Still on the episode of films that were or were not worth me getting traumatized for, I remembered a particular film production and thought to share it with you all today. I was having a random conversation with my siblings when one of them said to me, “Do you remember that film, life?” Now there are some productions that no matter how long has passed, you would always remember the name if the situation arose, so it did not take long at all for me to remember the film and just how terrific or not it was.

Life (2017)

Life is a horror/sci-fi film production directed by Daniel Espinosa and features stars like Ryan Reynolds, Hiroyuki Sanada, Rebecca Ferguson, Jake Gyllenhaal, and so on. It was released in 2017 and lasts for an about an hour and fifty minutes.

The story is about a six-team group of scientists of the International Space Station who discover the first evidence of a being or extra-terrestrial life on Mars. As at the time they find it, it is a single-celled organism that seems fairly harmless, until it grows into a multi-celled organism and is given the name, Calvin. These group of scientists soon realize that things are fairly ever as it seems because as they study Calvin, they discover that it is not just insanely vicious and out to destroy all of them, but is insanely intelligent as well. All of their efforts to overpower this life prove to have very dire consequences.

So, I may or may not have watched this because I knew Ryan Reynolds would be in the production. I love how he goes about his humour so I thought this would be some quirky, humour filled production, but of course I was immediately humbled when I saw they were in space because things hardly ever pam out right in space, am I right?

I personally did not have many issues with this production and I wouldn’t want to give spoilers for the benefit of those who haven’t seen it yet. The film is quite suspense filled and you just fill the tension building to an unbearable point but the tension kind of dissipated in an anti-climatic way and did not last enough to merit the suspense and tension that had built up.

Also, for a group of astronauts that double as scientists, the mistakes and rather unintelligent decisions they made left much to be desired. I mean, I screamed out of frustration a few times, saying things like, “Why are you going back there, it’s clearly waiting for you,” but yeah, I’m known for movie hysterics like that so you can choose not to mind me. But either way, the decision-making process these “scientists” had was a major source of frustration for me.

If you’re into the whole alien, existentialism bit, this would actually be a movie you’ll enjoy. I can’t say I’m much of either but I can still admit that it was quite a good watch. Truly. Extra points for the screams it offered and the classic ending it had which leaves you filling several shades of uneasy. So yeah, that’s about it.
