Kill Bill: Volume 1

The story begins with Beatrix Kiddo(Uma Thurman) arriving at the home of the second person on her death list, Vernita Green(Vivica Fox). She ends up killing the woman and turns round to find out that her victim’s daughter has witnessed the death of her mother by her hand. Telling the girl that she could come to revenge her mother’s death anytime, Beatrix leaves.

The movie does not follow a chronological order, and we find out that our protagonist has been done a grave injustice. A flashback to four years before at her wedding rehearsal, reveals a pregnant Beatrix just before the father of her unborn child together with his gang and institutes a massacre, shooting Beatrix herself in the head.

Four years of coma later, she wakes up to see herself unpregnant and a nurse about to inject a vile liquid into her. She also discovered that her comatose self had been sexually abused for money. Beatrix wakes up with a vengeance like no other. She is out to kill and has a death list. After ensuring she’s physically and mentally ready, she works her way up the death list meticulously. The number one goal is to Kill Bill.

I’d been in my room all day, so by the time I’d gotten to the living room, this film had already progressed. But, I was able to meet the second chapter of the film which began with the animated part. I’d been quite young then, so of course I was drawn to this story filled with massacre, blood and anguish. And nothing quite gets me going like a good revenge story. It seemed quite vile the things Beatrix was made to go through and worse, all she put herself through trying to prepare herself to face her aggressors.

What I loved about this film was the level of intensity with each part. We were drawn with a lethal fight scene and then reined in with a backstory that put us on the side of our protagonist like no other. When I rewatched the film again years later and in my own time, it felt all wrong and right at the same time. The martial arts, the violence, and the storyline itself which shouldn’t have been so brutal. All of that mixed made Kill Bill the iconic film that it was in my opinion.

I only learnt recently that there were other volumes and sequels to the original. All of which no doubt did very well in their own right. But this initial volume sated me enough. It did end with a cliffhanger, and the end goal itself was not fully reached, but I guess I didn’t bother enough to see it through to the end. I just might now that I’m filled with the nostalgia of how everything panned out, but I don’t know. We’ll see. So, there have you it. What do you think? Have you seen the film, Kill Bill?
