¿Qué pasaría si algún día alguien nos confesase (con argumentos, no opiniones) que ha vivido 14.000 años? Es decir, y para ponerlo en un contexto más adecuado y perfecto de entender; que desde la época de las cavernas, en el paleolítico superior hasta nuestros días, en pleno siglo XXI, un ser humano ha podido vencer a la muerte, pero sobre todo ha detenido al envejecimiento... Sí, ésta es la premisa de una de las películas con más carga intelectual que haya podido ver (y realmente disfrutar) desde hace mucho tiempo. Y todo gracias a una recomendación de un gran amigo... Este es mi análisis/review, y les advierto que tocaré temas sensibles, que levantan polémicas, pero con respeto...
Ahora sí empezamos... "John", es el nombre del protagonista de este film. Es un maestro de universidad, que se nos presenta como un sujeto que está a punto de mudarse. De hecho, todo la película transcurre en la sala principal (el living room) de éste. Resulta que ya han pasado 10 años desde que él (John) ha vivido y residido en ese lugar. Nadie lo sabe, nadie lo ha preguntado, pero nuestro querido protagonista tiene un secreto bastante impactante... También es un hombre de método. Lo que quiere decir, que después de un cierto período, emprende un "reset". Sencillamente, deja todo lo que alguna vez tuvo, e inicia de nuevo.
Sé que no me estoy dando a entender demasiado, pero lo bueno siempre se hace esperar un poco... Además, lo realmente trascendental de este film no es en sí lo que ocurre, sino la trama. Y es que, como buen profesor, John tiene un círculo de amistades que ha sabido cosechar a lo largo de su estancia en aquél lugar (no especificado en la película). De modo que sus compañeros se acercan a su casa, y deciden hacer una breve pero profunda reunión donde todo cambia para siempre. Él, no los esperaba. De hecho, la historia comienza con John finiquitando los detalles con la compañía de mudanzas. Moviendo cajas de un lugar a otro.
Inmediatamente después sus colegas llegan a su hogar, y traen cervezas y algo para comer. Listos para sentarse, y que transcurran las horas mientras charlan, y la pasan bien. Nada más lejano a la realidad... ¿Cómo "despega" la trama? Pues, la ansiedad y la inquietud de John provoca que sus compañeros noten su angustia, y comienzan a preguntarle "qué le sucede". John, esquivo y estoico, insiste en que "nada raro sucede, que simplemente no esperaba visitas en ese momento". Es tan evidente que miente, que sus compañeros profesores, insisten e insisten hasta que John, tanto abrumado por las preguntas como un poco intrigado comienza con una idea bastante curiosa...
En principio, lo plantea como una "investigación para una novela" que desea escribir "The Man From Earth". Donde un ser humano ha vivido ininterrumpidamente los últimos 14.000 años de la historia humana. Deteniendo su envejecimiento a los 35 años, y manteniéndose de este modo para siempre. Este individuo, según relata John, es un hombre de Cromagnon, y ha estado en todos los eventos que han moldeado la Humanidad durante 14 milenios... Comienza con el descubrimiento del lenguaje, al final del Paleolítico, y hasta cuenta que "algunas cosas" no han cambiado en absoluto... Como "silbar" a cierto tipo de mujeres, por parte de los hombres.
Los detalles que proporciona John son tan específicos, históricamente adecuados y temporalmente perfectos, que los demás profesores (de ramas como: antropología, física, biología, historia, y teología/arte) inmediatamente notan, que lo que les está relatando el protagonista dista mucho de sólo una novela... "¿Cómo conoce tal lujo de detalles, si John es sólo un profesor que enseña filosofía y religión?", muchos de ellos se preguntan... Inmediatamente, éste cambia el sujeto de atención de la conversación, y todo evoluciona. De un monólogo a un debate sumamente sustancial y profundo.
John, ante la mirada y el escepticismo de su audiencia, continúa con su relato e involucra las distintas etapas de la Humanidad. Preguntas sobre el origen de la especie, o si "recuerda con exactitud su lugar de nacimiento", invaden la atmósfera del film. John, paciente pero contundente responde, que es absurdo confiar en los sentidos. Y qué responder a esa pregunta, sería igual que preguntarle a un anciano de 90 años, si recuerda con exactitud y detalles todo sobre el primer lugar que vio cuando tenía 4 años de edad. Evidentemente, es imposible recordar eso... Además, añade, que en ese lapso la Humanidad ha cambiado muchísimo. Ellos eran nómadas, no se quedaban en un lugar.
Tenían roles. Cazar-recolectar, cuidarse, enterrar a sus muertos; guardar luto, seguir adelante: sobrevivir. Indica (John) que su grupo familiar "notó" lo que a él le sucedía, e inmediatamente le desterraron. Creían que él era como una especie de primer vampiro. Es decir, un ser "que absorbía la energía vital" de los demás para su propio beneficio. Antes, los lazos humanos no eran tan dependientes como son ahora. Todo se reducía más a sobrevivir y cuidarse las espaldas. John vivió incontables generaciones de seres humanos, y las sobrevivió a todas, inmune, invariable, sabio y vacío al mismo tiempo.
Desde conocer al Gran Buda (Siddharta Gautama) en Nepal hasta predicar las enseñanzas de sabiduría, amor, tolerancia y aceptación en Galilea y Judea... Y sí, les dije que ésto sería polémico, y no les mentí... En su momento, el mero nombre de "John" no existía. Puesto, que en hebreo le decían sus "seguidores" (nosotros lo conocemos como "apóstoles") "Yeshúa", y con la romanización del lenguaje, pasó a denominarse como "Jesús". El mensaje del "hijo de Dios" es el mensaje del maestro Buda... Y aquí yo no vengo a dar mis propios juicios de valor sobre el tema. Sólo les vengo a hacer una review sobre un camino de ciencia, filosofía, teología y antropología magistral.
El recorrido de John a través del intelecto, y sobre los eventos que han marcado histórica, geográfica y científicamente nuestra realidad, es sencillamente hermoso. Este film, rodado en un par de locaciones, lo tiene todo. Diálogos, un guión poderoso, y actores que hacen que una trama profunda pueda atraparte desde el primer momento. Además, está rodada y ambientada en 2007; uno de los mejores años de la historia de la humanidad... Antes del boom de la tecnología que hoy nos aleja los unos de los otros, pero lejos del claustro de épocas pasadas. Créanme cuando les digo, que este film va a volarles la cabeza.. What would happen if someday someone confessed to us (with arguments, not opinions) that he has lived 14,000 years? This is my analysis/review, and I warn you that I will touch on sensitive, controversial topics, but with respect...
Now let's get started... "John", is the name of the protagonist of this film. He is a college teacher, who is presented to us as a guy who is about to move. In fact, the whole movie takes place in his living room. It turns out that it has been 10 years since he (John) has lived and resided there. No one knows, no one has asked, but our beloved protagonist has a rather shocking secret.... He is also a man of method. Meaning, after a certain period, he undertakes a "reset". He simply drops everything he ever had, and starts anew.
Perhaps I'm not making myself too clear, but the good things always wait a little bit... Besides, what is really transcendental in this film is not what happens, but the plot. And the fact is that, as a good teacher, John has a circle of friends that he has been able to gather throughout his stay in that place (not specified in the film). So his classmates come to his house, and decide to have a brief but profound meeting where everything changes forever. He was not expecting them. In fact, the story begins with John finalizing the details with the moving company. Moving boxes from one place to another.
Immediately after, his colleagues arrive at his home, and bring beers and something to eat. Ready to sit down and let the hours go by while they chat and have a good time. Nothing could be further from the truth... How does the plot "take off"? Well, John's anxiety and restlessness causes his companions to notice his distress, and they begin to ask him "what's wrong". John, elusive and stoic, insists that "nothing unusual is going on, that he just wasn't expecting visitors at that time". It is so obvious that he is lying, that his fellow teachers, insist and insist until John, both overwhelmed by the questions and a little intrigued begins with a rather curious idea....
In principle, he poses it as a "research for a novel" that he wants to write "The Man From Earth". Where a human being has lived uninterruptedly for the last 14,000 years of human history. "How does he know such a wealth of details, if John is just a professor who teaches philosophy and religion?", many of them wonder.... Immediately, this changes the subject of attention of the conversation, and everything evolves. From a monologue to an extremely substantial and profound discussion.
John, before the gaze and skepticism of his audience, continues with his story and involves the different stages of Humanity. Questions about the origin of the species, or whether he "remembers exactly where he was born," pervade the atmosphere of the film. John, patient but forceful, answers that it is absurd to trust the senses. And what to answer that question, would be the same as asking a 90 year old man, if he remembers with accuracy and detail everything about the first place he saw when he was 4 years old. Obviously, it is impossible to remember that.... Besides, he adds, in that time Humanity has changed a lot. They were nomads, they didn't stay in one place.
They had roles. To hunt-gather, to take care of themselves, to bury their dead; to mourn, to move on: to survive. He indicates (John) that his family group "noticed" what was happening to him, and immediately banished him. They believed him to be a kind of first vampire. That is, a being "who absorbed the vital energy" of others for his own benefit. Before, human bonds were not as dependent as they are now. It was more about survival and watching each other's backs. John lived through countless generations of human beings, and survived them all, immune, unchanging, wise and empty at the same time.
From meeting the Great Buddha (Siddhartha Gautama) in Nepal to preaching the teachings of wisdom, love, tolerance and acceptance in Galilee and Judea? And yes, I told you this would be controversial, and I didn't lie.... At the time, the mere name "John" did not exist. Since in Hebrew he was called "Yeshua" by his "followers" (we know him as "apostles"), and with the romanization of the language, he came to be called "Jesus". I only come to review a path of science, philosophy, theology and masterly anthropology.
John's journey through the intellect and the events that have historically, geographically and scientifically marked our reality is simply beautiful. This film, shot on a couple of locations, has it all. Dialogues, a powerful script, and actors that make a deep plot that can grab you from the first moment. Plus, it's shot and set in 2007; one of the best years in the history of mankind? Before the boom of technology that today distances us from each other, but far from the cloister of past times. Believe me when I tell you, this film will blow your mind.... And yes, it is available in English-Spanish on YouTube, for free.

Fascinante; me hizo recordar la novela de Simone de Beauvoir: Todos los hombres son mortales; donde habla sobre la inmortalidad a través del personaje Raymond Fosca, quien en 1311, siendo el príncipe de Carmona, lleva a cabo un proyecto político y trata de resolver sus problemas amorosos, lo cual no logra; por lo que viaja, encontrando la inmortalidad. Una historia de vida que cuenta a Regina, una actríz, exponiendo la maldición de ser inmortal. Para Fosca, el único enemigo capaz de derrotar al hombre es el tiempo.
