You wait in the airport terminal for more than three hours for your cousin, who has not arrived late and is not irresponsible.... What happens is that you are the one who, moved by loneliness and depression, find ‘company and fun being surrounded by people who don't know who you are or what you are doing there (sitting in an airport chair). More or less, this is how ‘A Real Pain’ begins. It's a film that is designed (by its director and screenwriter, Jesse Eisenberg) to touch deep emotions...

It is relatively simple in plot... The grandmother of a pair of cousins dies... As a last act, she asks them to go to Europe; precisely to Poland (where the grandmother is originally from) to find out how she lived, what it's like in her country and to (together) have an emotional and moving trip. Seen superficially, it would seem to be just another roadtrip. Where 2 characters that, although family, don't get along at all but end up being incredibly close and different what at first...

Oh, the surprise... I'm not going to give away any spoilers with this true drama, dark comedy and postmodern tragedy film.... So I'll just focus on Kieran Culkin's masterful performance. A simple role but thanks to the direction of his co-star, Jesse Eisenberg, it ends up being simply powerful and extremely profound. And let's be honest, it's a malady of today's society, the epidemic of loneliness and the lack of empathy and human touch in dealing with problems.

To be honest, I watched this film without being contaminated by any outside influences. I knew about it, because I am a self-professed fan of Culkin's work, and one day I sat down to watch it, thinking it would be something like ‘Europe-Europe’ but to my surprise, the power of the dialogue, the depth but little intellectual pretension of the characters and the beautiful use of black comedy (very Fleabag-esque) made me fall in love with this film, absolutely.

Having the opportunity to find hidden treasures within a good cinematic story is something I appreciate immensely in a materialistic world where capital rules and matters more than anything else.... Besides, I like to be moved by cinema. In the old days, I would have told you that this is for ‘weaklings’ or ‘pretentious snobs’, however, I have come to terms with my positions and every now and then I fully enjoy the satisfaction of a film that brings tears to your eyes but with mixed emotions. Not everything is an irreparable tragedy or a stand up show.... Oh, beautiful balance. P.S: pay attention to the last 10 minutes of this film. There you will know the reason for the name...
