"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" by David Yates: End of an Evil

Introduction

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 is the culmination of the Harry Potter film series, it is the 8th film of the franchise that has spanned a decade. I am expecting Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 to be a film that features an all-out war between Voldemort and his Death Eaters versus Harry Potter (The Boy Who Lived) and his allies but as it turned it still has a very interesting story and twists.

The Film's Narrative

The film's narrative is all about the scary and near-death experiences of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley on their quest to find and destroy all the Horcruxes and finally defeat Voldemort.

Thoughts

It is brilliant that the ending of Deathly Hallows Part 1 is also the beginning scene of Deathly Hallows Part 2 (see image below). I think the director made this connecting scene to immerse the viewers/fans in the events from Part 1 and the coming events in this Part 2 film.

It is this film that made me curious about why Harry Potter agreed to the terms of Griphook. Griphook wanted the sword of Gryffindor as a price if he was going to help Harry Potter get into Gringot Wizarding Bank and lead him to Bellatrix Lestrange's Vault (see image below). I think Harry Potter did not hesitate to agree to the terms of Griphook because the sword is enchanted (it will present itself to the one who needs it). Griphook probably does not know about it or he just takes for granted the word of Harry Potter that the swords present themselves in time of dire need.

One of the characters that I hate the most in Harry Potter is Bellatrix Lestrange because of her blood-lust character. But then I find her likable when Hermione Granger imitates her using Pollyjuice for them to break into the vault of the real Bellatrix Lestrange (see image below).

Just like with the past film, I am always looking forward to what surprise will be shown in this film and it came when the trio were inside the vault of Bellatrix Lestrange. It started when Hermione Granger accidentally touched an object and then it fell to the floor prompting it to multiply it is what happened to Ron Weasley when he touched something and it also fell to the floor making it multiply (see image below).

One of the mysteries that made me very curious from part 1 is the mirror that Harry Potter has in his possession. Whenever he looks at it he can see someone in it. And then in this film (part 2) the answer came when they finally met the man Harry Potter saw in the mirror, it was Aberforth Dumbledore, the younger brother of Albus Dumbledore. It surprises me that this film showed the brother of Albus Dumbledore I thought that the man in the mirror was someone else. I did not think that it was someone related to Albus.

Another surprise in this film is when Aberforth sends his sister on the portrait to get someone and that someone is Neville Longbottom in addition, there is a secret passage behind the portrait, brilliant.

Since the beginning of Harry Potter, I have always looked forward to the moment that Severus Snape would go head-to-head with his fellow professor at Hogwarts. It was answered in Deathly Hallows Part 2 in which Professor McGonagall attacks Severus Snape to protect Harry Potter. It was only a break duel and Severus Snape did not retaliate, instead, he escaped out of Hogwarts.

There was also this tear-jerky moment when Professor McGonagall summoned the statues saying "Hogwarts is threatened, man the boundaries, protect us, do your duty to our school". Even though they are only statues with no feelings the heat of the moment and the emotion made it a tear-jerky moment for me.

Then the momentous event came, the death of Severus Snape. Voldemort killed Snape for him to get the allegiance of the Elder Wand but little did he know that the true master of the Elder Wand is not Severus Snape but Harry Potter himself. It is in the inevitable death of Severus Snape that Voldemort tells Severus Snape has been a faithful servant, meaning, he (Voldemort) did not know that Severus Snape was a spy and a member of the Order of the Phoenix. All became clear when Harry Potter saw the memories of Severus Snape in the Pensieve (a brilliant plot).

Then the moment that we all been waiting for, the inevitable death of Harry Potter. He lets Voldemort kill him, but he is actually alive and is only hurt. The fact that Harry Potter did nothing when Voldemort casts the killing curse Avada Kedavra on him made me wonder why he did not die. It is because the master of the elder wand is him, or is it because Avada Kedavra only killed the piece of soul of Voldemort inside Harry? At that moment, Harry is the master of death because he owns all three Deathly Hallows. Or is it like the old time when Voldemort first tried to kill him as an infant the curse rebounded effectively killing Voldemort?

Conclusion

Of all the eight films the first one and this last film is my favorites. Because of course, the first one breaks all barriers on what a magical film should be. I like this last film because of the revelations and the fact that Harry Became the master of death.

This last film is probably the most thrilling and pulse-pounding as it shows the death of some beloved/hated characters. This film is full of revelation with lots of twists and makes you curious about how some things in the film happened. This film is a must-watch but if you haven't watched the previous seven films then you will not fully understand what has happened in this last film.

It has been a long ride re-watching all the films for review and it is worthwhile, Harry Potter is indeed one of the best film franchises of all time!
