My Penguin Friend (2024)
A heartbroken Fisherman comes across a Penguin that needs help. He gives it the help it needs having no idea that this penguin would turn into a lifelong friend.
My Penguin Friend is a heartwarming and compassionate movie based on the true story of a fisherman, João, who would find joy again in the person of a penguin - DinDim. It stars Jean Reno and Adriana Barraza.
Directed by David Schurmann, this movie highlights the theme of family and bonds in the unlikeliest of ways. The story of DinDim already went viral in 2016 but we get to watch this movie in 2024.
Personally, I have never come across this story. However, watching the interaction between the characters somehow restored my faith in humanity. It was mellow and captured every single detail of what it must have been like for those who really lived the story.
As a father, I can’t begin to imagine what João must have gone through and this Brazilian-American adventure film inspired by a true story only sealed the thoughts I have had regarding human and animal relationships. Friendships and bonds can be forged in the most oddest ways with the most oddest species. The hate we experience in the world today is only man’s doing and wholesome movies like this send a haul of a message.
I like that the Director and the writers didn’t go out of their way to spin the tale all out of order like some movies/documentaries I’ve seen so far. Some people may be put off on the lack of drama, I for one thought it was something I am not used to, the tone of it all, but it was still captivating. Sometimes, less is more.
I also liked how they used camera angles to show us from the Penguins’ view. It also helped in creating that angst during trying moments for DinDim in his fight to be with his friend.
I’m glad I came across a wholesome movie like this. It’s something I can watch with my family and my kid. If you’re looking for something to watch with family or just alone, I recommend.
