Fall Camping: Mitchell State Park

Like my previous posts about Harrisville State Park, Mitchell State Park in Cadillac, MI is another one of those places that @mrsbozz and I always find ourselves coming back to. Unlike some of the other state parks in Michigan, Mitchell is not isolated or off the beaten path. It sits right along highway 115 that runs along the west side of the state.

In fact, you are more likely to hear noise from the road than you are the sounds of nature in this park. This might sound horrible to some of the purists out there, but if you go in knowing what to expect, it isn't all that bad.

We actually had an abnormally warm weekend for this time of year. Due to that fact, the campground was actually quite full and there were a large number of people with their watercraft out on the lakes. I've written about this before, but Mitchell State Park actually consists of two lakes Lake Mitchell, and Lake Cadillac. They are connected by a canal that runs along the edge of the campground. Prime campsites in Mitchell State Park are the ones along the canal.

Since we arrived a little later on Friday night, we decided to try a little place down the road called 13th Street Market. It looked like there were a lot of regulars there when we stopped in, so I had high hopes for this place.

Unfortunately, it turned out to not be the great. While the food looked really good, the flavors just weren't there and the service was a bit off.

For example, my wife's sandwich was called the Turkacado leaning heavy into the fact that there was avocado on the sandwich. However, when she got it, there was absolutely zero avocado on it. My sandwich was a play on the famous McDonald's McRib sandwich. It had BBQ pork, pickles, onions, and BBQ sauce. It had a lot of potential, but unfortunately, the pork had a bit of a chemically taste to it. I think it had to do with the type or how much smoke they used. I ate the whole thing, but it wasn't really what I expected.

We did head out on Saturday to visit a few points of interest. I am going to cover two of them in separate posts, but our third stop took us to the Yoder Bulk Food store in Tustin, MI. You may or may not know that Yoder is a pretty common surname when it comes to the Amish population. We have a large Amish community spread across the central part of lower Michigan and they have made an enterprise of selling bulk and handmade furniture and food items.

I honestly think some of the stuff they just buy in bulk and resell it, but there is other stuff that you can definitely tell is homemade.

We picked up some granola that was really good as well as some garden salsa and some blueberry jam. Finally, we snagged a couple large cookies in the baked goods section that were really amazing. They also had a deli counter where they would make sandwiches for you.

For the most part, we just hung around our campsite and sat by the fire or watched the Michigan State Football game under the awning outdoors. It was a pretty cool weekend.

We were supposed to go on another trip this weekend, but I think we are going to have to cancel it. I finally pulled the unlucky straw and after almost five years I got my first case of Covid. It has been kicking my butt. I've had to take three days of work this week already and if I am not feeling better by tomorrow it will probably be four.

I haven't been this sick since I started working in the public school system. I think the worst part is the sharp debilitating sinus pain my head. It's beyond anything I have ever felt before. I can't imagine what people who suffer from migraines must go through. This is absolute torture!

Too bad the food wasn't great. The way I look at camping is that even loud areas are still nature, so it's all good. In this modern world it's hard to get completely away from the sound of traffic.

avatar

It kind of is. There are some areas of Michigan where you can come close though.

Looks like a nice trip, and get away from the city. Too bad the food at that place was lackluster. I'm surprised they left off avocado from the sandwich, not the best joint nearby apparently. You got some great pictures though and you had some nature among the sound of traffic on the highway! lol

Thanks, it's honestly a really great park. There is so much to do in the area as you will see next week.

Heh, sometimes even if the food tastes great, if the service is off it gives the whole experience a bad taste. :))

Yeah, in this case even some components of the food weren't that great. It had the potential, but the execution was clearly off.

It seems to a very peaceful and stunning park, but...The food doesn't seems to be much appropriate and good, but i would appreciate the beauty of the park as well as the surroundings, it's awesome and stunning..!!

It's a really cool place. We will be coming back here for years to come!
