The Worst Book-to-film adaptations (ENG/SPA)
Hello, people of the Internet, everything alright? Today I want to do a post a little bit different from what I usually do but, talking with my sister, we got to this topic and I realised that it is true, there are many books that are extremely good but whose film adaptations suck or at least are disappointing in some aspects, so that's what I'll talk about today.

Hoy quiero hacer un post un poco diferente a lo que acostumbro pero es que, conversando con mi hermana, llegamos a este tema y me di cuenta de que sí es cierto, hay muchos libros que son extremadamente buenos pero cuyas adaptaciones filmográficas son un asco o cuando menos, son decepcionantes en algunos aspectos, así que de eso les hablaré hoy.
I will start by talking about the film I chose for the cover: Narnia is a saga of books (7 units) in the fantasy genre, beginning with the creation of Narnia and ending with the destruction of Narnia and the rise of the new Narnia (a nod to the biblical apocalypse by C.S. Lewis).
Empezaré hablado de la película que elegí para portada: Narnia es una saga de libros (7 unidades) del género fantasía, empieza con la creación de Narnia y termina con la destrucción de la misma y el resurgimiento de la nueva Narnia (un guiño que quiso hacer C.S Lewis al apocalipsis de la biblia).
Although the first film was a bit more faithful to the book and the film did a very good job in terms of setting and all that, as the following films went on it went downhill. To begin with, they decided to only bring the Pevensie's story to the movies, that's how they adapted book 2, 3 and 5 as movies 1, 2 and 3. Don't get me wrong, I like the movies but I don't consider them to be good adaptations (they are two different things).
Aunque la primera película fue un poco más fiel al libro y la película hizo un muy buen trabajo en cuanto a su ambientación y todo eso, con el paso de las siguientes películas se fue en picada. Para empezar, decidieron solo llevar al cine la historia de los Pevensie, es así como adaptaron el libro 2, 3 y 5 como las películas 1, 2 y 3. No me mal entiendan, las películas me gustan pero no considero que sean buenas adaptaciones (son dos cosas diferentes)
The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian was very good, at least in general lines it follows the story of the book, however, they decided to make a strange romance between Caspian and Susan that led to nothing because as everyone knew, she had to return to her world, besides, being at war I don't think that's an option, much less being the monarchs. Also, in the eagerness to give Caspian too much "protagonism", they put him to fight one on one with Peter when in the book, still angry, he kept his place as subordinate of the high monarch, besides that in the movie the mistake was Caspian's and he fights with Peter blaming him.
Las Crónicas de Narnia: El Príncipe Caspian estuvo muy bien, al menos en líneas generales sigue la historia del libro, sin embargo, decidieron hacer un romance extraño entre Caspian y Susan que no llevó a nada ya que como todos sabían, ella debía volver a su mundo, además, estando en guerra no creo que eso sea una opción, mucho menos siendo los monarcas. Además, en el afán de darle demasiado "protagonismo" a Caspian, lo pusieron a pelear de tú a tú con Peter cuando en el libro, aún enfadado, guardaba su lugar como subordinado del sumo monarca, además que en la película el error fue de Caspian y pelea con Peter echándole la culpa,
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Dawn Treader is even worse, although it starts very similar to the book and the central story is maintained, Caspian's journey to the ends of the earth in search of his father's 7 lords, everything else is a disaster. The journey feels extremely rushed, the character of the girl is only from the movie and is super unnecessary (she adds nothing) to top it off they decided to put in a plot with the swords of the lords that never happened in the books and that island of darkness was not part of the climax, it's too different from the book and also everything is poorly implemented. I hope someone will come up with the idea to redo the saga from the beginning and do it well this time.
Las Crónicas de Narnia: El Viajero del Alba es aun peor, aunque empieza muy parecido al libro y la historia central se mantiene, el viaje de Caspian a los confines del mundo en busca de los 7 lords de su padre, todo lo demás es un desastre. El viaje se siente sumamente apresurado, el personaje de la niña es únicamente de la película y es super innecesario (no aporta nada) para más colmo decidieron meter una trama con las espadas de los lords que nunca pasó en los libros y esa isla del la oscuridad no formaba parte del clímax, es demasiado diferente al libro y además todo está mal implementado. Espero que a alguien se le ocurra volver a hacer la saga desde un inicio y bien hecha esta vez.
The next film that you might be surprised to hear me say sucks as an adaptation is none other than I Am Legend. I mean the movie itself is good (I'm talking about the Will Smith movie), but as an adaptation it leaves a lot to be desired. The book is very good, despite having only one character, its narrative is so good that it literally doesn't get boring, also the beings in the book that Neville calls "vampires" keep some consciousness, at the end we discover that in reality, many of them evolved and are a new society, they are quite creepy while in the movie they are relegated to simple humanoid, infected beings and this actually leads me to talk about the next movie.
La siguiente película quizá les pueda sorprender que diga que es un asco en cuando a ser una adaptación y se trata nada más ni nada menos que Soy Leyenda. A ver, la película por sí misma es buena (me refiero a la de Will Smith), sin embargo como adaptación deja mucho que desear. El libro es muy bueno, pese a tener a un único personaje, su narrativa es tan buena que literalmente no se torna aburrido, además los seres del libro a los que Neville llama "vampiros" guardan cierta consciencia, al final descubrimos que en realidad, muchos de ellos evolucionaron y son una nueva sociedad, son bastante escalofriantes mientras que en la película son relegados a simples humanoides, seres infectados y esto de hecho me lleva a hablar de la siguiente película.
Maze Runner is one of the best sagas I have read, the author generates an atmosphere of mystery, expectation and emotion, it makes you want to know more, besides that, the events take place in a quite realistic way, the psychological terror is prioritised before the action etc. On the other hand, the film is inaccurate, they changed some important events, personalities of characters and even as the saga progresses it gets worse. The movies are entertaining but frantic, one of my favourite aspects are the Cranks, people infected with a virus that makes them act erratically, which makes them much more terrifying, in the movies they are relegated to being infected without consciousness like the zombies in the last of us.
Maze Runner es una de las mejores sagas que he leído, el autor genera una atmósfera de misterio, expectación y emoción, te hace querer saber más, además de eso, los eventos transcurren de una forma bastante realista, se prioriza el terror psicológico antes que la acción etc. Por otro lado, la película es poco exacta, cambiaron algunos acontecimientos importantes, personalidades de personajes e incluso a medida que avanza la saga se pone peor. Las películas son entretenidas pero frenéticas, uno de mis aspectos preferidos son los Cranks, personas infectadas con un virus que los hace actuar de forma errática, lo que los hace mucho más aterradores, en las películas los relegaron a ser infectados sin consciencia como los zombies de the last of us.
Even the changes were such that as time went on I gave up watching the saga because it was disappointment after disappointment, it is truly and without a doubt the worst adaptation of a book.
Incluso los cambios fueron tales que con el pasar del tiempo renuncié a terminar de ver la saga porque era decepción tras decepción, de verdad y sin lugar a dudas es la peor adaptación de un libro.

De todas las películas que sacaron de esos libros la primera fue mi favorita, las demás se inclinaron más a lo soso y aburrido, concuerdo contigo en mucho de lo que dices.

Un dedicado trabajo de crítica en concordancia con tu perfil de lectora y cinéfila. Nos ofreces una evaluación muy amplia de esa relación, siempre tan difícil, entre texto y filme. Cabe destacar que hay versiones de textos que no son tan fieles a ellos, pero que los enriquecen desde otra perspectiva. Saludos, @bethyjade.
Muchas gracias, me contenta mucho. Mi problema con estas malas adaptaciones no son el cambio como tal (en la serie The Walking Dead hay muchos cambios respecto al comic y la mayoría fueron para mejor) sino que cambiar tantos aspectos de una historia la hace prácticamente otra fue lo que pasó en estos casos o también la falta de protagonismo en algunos personajes que hace ´poco congruente la traba (como en el caso de los niños Pevensie y Caspian en Narnia) :3 considero que si la obra literaria es un éxito tal como está, así debería mantenerse en la gran pantalla o cuando menos agregar y no quitar o que los cambios ligeros sean para enriquecer y no para restar :3 Muchas gracias por su comentario
Maze Runner in particular was a disappointment to me but then again, other than Hunger Games I have never really enjoyed any "teenagers taking charge to bring down the man!" type films. I understand why they make them but they just don't really appeal to adults. I say this having never read the books though. I absolutely loved the Hunger Games books but because of having read them, those movies were a bit of a disappointment to me as well.
Hahaha that's just it, you haven't read the books (regarding Maze Runner for example) because I am also an adult and while I hate the movies because they are bland and seem like teenage drama, the books are a critique of the system from an adult perspective using teenagers to tell the story, the fact that the protagonists are teenagers doesn't ensure that the plot is for teenagers (this talking about the books) that's precisely why I hated the movies.
well i'm sold. I'll get the books stat... how many of them are there? I recall that the Hunger Games books were some of the best that I have ever read. There are very few instances in my life that I loved a book so much that I would get annoyed that anything would take me away from them and also stayed up past my bedtime to effing READ.
