let's talk about Wonka, review (ENG/SPA)
Hello, Internet people. Today I want to talk to you about this movie, I must admit that I started watching it with panic, not fear, but panic 😂🤣 and of Dahl's books, this and Matilda are my favourites, plus Burton's film co-starring Johnny Deep is my favourite (also in fact the author of the book) and with the poor quality of the last films I've seen I was terrified that they would ruin my favourite character from the book 😥😂 so let's break this film down to see if I considered it a failure or not.

Hoy quiero hablarles de esta película, debo admitir que empecé a verla con pánico, no miedo, sino pánico 😂🤣 y es que de los libros de Dahl, este y Matilda son mis preferidos, además la cinta de Burton coprotagonizada por Johnny Deep es mi preferida (también de hecho la del autor del libro) y con la calidad pobre de las últimas películas que he visto estaba aterrada de que arruinaran a mi personaje preferido del libro 😥😂 así que desglosemos este film a ver si la consideré un fracaso o no.
𝓕𝓸𝓽𝓸𝓰𝓻𝓪𝓯í𝓪 / 𝓒𝓲𝓷𝓮𝓶𝓪𝓽𝓸𝓰𝓻𝓪𝓹𝓱𝔂
The cinematography is beautiful, with a colour palette that is quite striking and colourful (due to the candy theme, which is logical), and we also have the dull palette that represents the oppression of the workers, that is, the one seen when Wonka and his companions are working in the laundry. In the film there is a set of quite nice shots, most of them are wide and with little movement, there is one that includes lights and shadows at the same time in a quite artistic result of counter light.
La fotografía es preciosa, tiene una paleta de colores bastante llamativa y variopinta (debida a la temática de los dulces, cosa lógica) también tenemos la paleta deslucida que representa la opresión sobre los trabajadores, es decir esta que se ve cuando Wonka y sus compañeros están trabajando en la lavandería. En la película están presentes un conjunto de planos bastante bonitos, la mayoría son amplios y con poco movimiento, hay uno que incluye luces y sombras a la vez con un resultado bastante artístico de contra luz.
𝓗𝓲𝓼𝓽𝓸𝓻𝓲𝓪 / 𝓢𝓽𝓸𝓻𝔂
Don't get me wrong, the story of the film is not bad and I don't mind musicals either, but there are details. The film starts with a young Wonka (we don't know if he is a teenager or a young adult) who is travelling around the world in search of exotic flavours and arrives in a city where the costs are quite high, which in a series of events, Willy runs out of money, Therefore somehow (you know I don't like spoilers so I won't give details) he ends up signing a contract to work, under exploitative labour conditions, trying to get out of this problem, Wonka discovers a network of corruption in the city, therefore he plans to destroy it with his friends while at the same time trying to succeed as a chocolate maker.
No me mal entiendan, la historia de la película no está mal y tampoco me molestan los musicales peeeero hay detalles. La película empieza con un joven Wonka (ignoramos si es adolescente o joven adulto) este está viajando por el mundo en busca de sabores exóticos y llega a una ciudad donde los costos son bastante elevados, lo que hace que en una serie de acontecimientos, Willy se quede sin dinero, por tanto de alguna forma (ya saben que no me gusta hacer spoilers así que no daré detalles) termina firmando un contrato para trabajar, bajo condiciones de explotación laboral, intentando salir de este problema, Wonka descubre una red de corrupción en la ciudad, por lo tanto planea destruirla con sus amigos mientras a su vez intenta tener éxito como chocolatero.
I like the clear criticism of the system and the corruption that exists in almost every country in the world, what we see in the film is a reflection of reality and I like the way of implementing it in the film as it is very clear but they give it a slight comic tinge to make it family friendly as it is a film aimed at all audiences, Also each of the hardships that poor Wonka goes through to achieve his dream, gives a little more realism to the final result of his story (an eccentric millionaire owner of the best candy factory) but that's where the details I told you about are:
Me gusta la clara crítica al sistema y la corrupción que hay en casi todos los países del mundo, lo que vemos en la película es un reflejo de la realidad y me gusta la forma de implementarla, ya que es muy clara pero le dan un ligero tinte cómico para hacerlo family friendly, debido a que es una película orientada a todo el público, además, cada una de las penurias que pasa el pobre Wonka para lograr su sueño, le aporta un poco más de realismo al resultado final de su historia (un excéntrico millonario dueño de la mejor fabrica de dulces) sin embargo es ahí donde están los detalles que les dije:
When the film explores Willy's childhood... I feel it's very mediocre, let's say it's typical, he inherits the qualities of a relative (in this case his mother) he also inherits the dream, then the relative dies and that reinforces the idea, so as an adult, the protagonist struggles to achieve that dream until he does (it's something we already saw for example in The Princess and The Frog) it's an overused and very mediocre resource at this point.
Cuando en la película se explora la niñez de Willy... siento que es muy mediocre, digamos que es lo típico, hereda las cualidades de un familiar (en este caso la madre) hereda también el sueño, luego el familiar fallece y eso refuerza la idea, así que de mayor, el protagonista lucha por lograr ese sueño hasta que lo logra (es algo que ya vimos por ejemplo en La princesa y El Sapo) es un recurso demasiado utilizado y muy mediocre a estas alturas.
In my favourite adaptation "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" Willy's childhood is more significant, he is a boy whose father was a dentist and very strict who forbade him to eat sweets, however as time went by Willy revealed himself to his father and decided to forge his own path, So as a child he decided to leave home and start learning the trade until he perfected it and set up his own company, this Willy had a sad past, a childhood trauma and deprivation, besides being the eccentric chocolate maker, happy and retains the same sense of humour as in the book, he had nuances that made him more credible for a film adaptation. I know this is a separate film that has nothing to do with Burton's, but at least they should have given nuances to this Willy, it is a little more faithful to the book, yes, but the book is a fantasy story for children, it could only be done as it is if it were an animation, if you are going to make a live action, at least give it nuances to make the protagonist more realistic, otherwise it will feel strange or at least mediocre (which is what ended up happening).
En mi adaptación favorita "Charlie y la Fabrica de Chocolates" la infancia de Willy es más significativa, es un niño cuyo padre era dentista y muy estricto el cual le prohibía comer golosinas, sin embargo con el paso del tiempo Willy se reveló a su padre y decidió forjar su propio camino, por lo que siendo un niño decidió irse de casa y empezar a aprender el oficio hasta perfeccionarlo y montar su propia empresa, este Willy tenía un pasado triste, un trauma infantil y carencias, además de ser el excéntrico chocolatero, feliz y conserva el mismo sentido del humor extraño que en libro, tenía matices que lo hacían más creíble para una adaptación fílmica. Sé que esta es otra película aparte que nada tiene que ver con la de Burton, pero al menos han debido darle matices a este Willy, es un poco más fiel al libro, eso sí, pero el libro es un cuento de fantasía para niños, solo podría hacerse tal cual si fuese una animación, si vas a hacer un live action, al menos ponle matices para hacer más realista al protagonista, sino va a sentirse extraño o cuando menos mediocre (que fue lo que terminó pasando)
𝓐𝓬𝓽𝓾𝓪𝓬𝓲𝓸𝓷𝓮𝓼 / 𝓐𝓬𝓽𝓲𝓸𝓷𝓼
With the above said, I am not saying that the actor did a bad job, it is more a script problem, Timothée was asked to do so and that is how he played it, he did not do it badly, he did what he was asked to do, when the character is not well developed in the script, the actor does what he can with what he has and that's it, but you can tell that he is a very good actor because he made Willy a lovable and noble character, and you could see the enthusiasm with which he did it.
Con lo anterior dicho, no estoy diciendo que el actor lo haya hecho mal, es más un problema de guion, a Timothée, así se lo pidieron y así lo interpretó, no lo hizo mal, hizo lo que le pidieron, cuando el personaje no está bien desarrollado en el guion, el actor hace lo que puede con lo que tiene y listo, pero se nota que es un muy buen interprete ya que hizo de Willy un personaje adorable y noble, además se notó el entusiasmo con el que lo hizo.
Overall the performances are very good. The villains are good, especially Slugworth who is actually Willy's rival in the previous adaptations and sought to steal his recipes, I liked that this adaptation explores more of this character and makes him relevant.
En términos generales las actuaciones son muy buenas la verdad. Los villanos están bien, sobre todo Slugworth quien de hecho es el rival de Willy en las anteriores adaptaciones, y buscaba robarle sus recetas, me gustó que en esta adaptación se explore más de este personaje y que sea relevante.
Soundtrack
I won't go on too much about this feature, the soundtrack is quite good (although in general I like it better in the 2006 film because the songs were funnier) the problem I have with this aspect is that it was practically a Hollywood rip-off because in the trailer nowhere does it show that the film is really a musical, and considering that musicals are not the favourites of the majority of the public, selling a film in that way would make people who don't like musicals spend their money to finally find out in the cinema that it is a musical and then get angry (it happened when I went to the cinema).
No me extenderé mucho hablando de esta característica, el soundtrack es bastante bueno (aunque en general me gusta más en la de la película de 2006 porque las canciones resultaban más graciosas) el problema que tengo con este aspecto es que prácticamente fue un timo de Hollywood ya que en el tráiler por ningún lado se aprecia que la película es realmente un musical, y teniendo en cuenta que los musicales no son los preferidos de la mayoría del publico, vender una película de esa forma haría que la gente a la que no le gustan los musicales gaste su dinero para finalmente descubrir en la sala de cine que es un musical y entonces se enojen (pasó cuando fui a verla al cine)
In my case I didn't care, but there were people who were annoyed watching the film to justify the money spent more than for any other reason.
En mi caso me dio igual, pero sí hubo personas molestas viendo la película por justificar el dinero gastado más que por cualquier otra razón.
