I think we're all scared of typical ventriloquist dummies, so taking them to make a horror film is very good. It was James Wan's first work into the horror genre after directing Saw (where he had been labelled as not very diligent and that he "only knew how to scare with blood") so with this work he set out to prove otherwise.

The story focuses on Jamie Ashen who one night receives a package containing a strange ventriloquist dummy, after the strange death of his wife, Jamie decides to go to his place of origin as he suspects that the dummy has something to do with and it is there where the dark adventure unfolds.
La historia se centra en Jamie Ashen quien una noche recibe un paquete que contiene un extraño muñeco ventrílocuo, tras la extraña muerte de su esposa, Jamie decide ir a su lugar de origen ya que sospecha que el muñeco tiene algo que ver, y es allí donde se desarrolla a tétrica aventura.
I have to talk about the cinematography, let's say that it is not as polished as in other later works by Wan, but it is very well done, the staging and cinematography together achieve a perfect atmosphere, gloomy, sinister and oppressive.
Tengo que hablar de la fotografía, digamos que no está tan pulida como en otros trabajos posteriores de Wan, pero está muy bien lograda, la puesta en escena y la fotografía logran en conjunto una ambientación perfecta, tétrica, siniestra y opresiva.
On the other hand, James proved what he wanted, that he was good at handling horror. In this film this aspect is the best, the sinister scenes are very well taken care of, from the lighting to the construction of the shots and sequences. The soundtrack is part of this aspect not so much for its musical compositions (which of course it is) but I am referring more to the fact of the importance of the sound during the most important scenes, these sounds emphasize and increase the terror, I will explain it in more detail below.

En esta película este aspecto es lo mejor, las escenas siniestras están muy bien cuidadas, desde la iluminación hasta la construcción de los planos y secuencias. El Soundtrack forma parte de este aspecto no tanto por sus composiciones musicales (que claro que sí) pero me refiero más al hecho de la importancia del sonido durante las escenas más importantes, dichos sonidos enfatizan e incrementan el terror, pasaré a explicarlo más detalladamente a continuación.
In the death of Lisa for example (Jamie's wife) every sound has a strong presence, for example when the scene begins, she puts the kettle on (the sound of the fire and the kettle banging against the cooker can be heard) as well as the background music and gradually everything is gradually silenced (even the kettle) until a spectral, unnatural silence is formed, in the distance only the sound of thunder and rain can be heard, almost as if they were very distant. When Jamie arrives it is quite the opposite, there is a lot of noise, this ambiguity is quite significant.
En la muerte de Lisa por ejemplo (la esposa de Jamie) cada sonido tiene mucha presencia, por ejemplo cuando la escena inicia, ella pone la tetera (oyéndose el sonido del fuego y la tetera chocando contra la hornilla) además de la música de fondo y paulatinamente se va silenciando todo poco a poco (incluso la tetera) hasta que se forma un silencio espectral, antinatural, muy a lo lejos solo se oye el ruido de los truenos y la lluvia, casi como si fuesen muy distantes. Cuando llega Jamie es todo lo contrario, hay mucho ruido, esta ambigüedad es bastante significativa.
The shots are very good, there are many that are very interesting such as those where the camera zooms out and the scene is represented in Jamie's eye (there are two shots in a row like this) besides looking impressive, these scenes have the function of making the viewer understand that Jamie was traumatized by what he saw, that these events are engraved in his retina.
Los planos son muy buenos, hay muchos que resultan muy interesantes como esos donde la cámara se aleja y la escena se representa en el ojo de Jamie (hay dos planos seguidos así) además de verse impresionante, estas escenas tienen la función de hacer entender al espectador que Jamie quedó traumatizado con lo que vio, que dichos eventos están grabados en su retina.
But if we talk about good cinematography and handling of terror I have to show you my favorite scene of the film, the scene in the funeral home and there is not only a subtle handling of terror that escalates in intensity without looking vulgar (a Wan's trademark) but also has very good shots and transitions like the one where the young Henrry goes down the stairs and in the transition the past and present coincide with an older Herry telling the memory, also when the scene returns to the past and Henrry goes down the stairs to the basement which is really the Tanatopraxia area, there is a counter shot that emphasize the attention on the protagonist of the scene and then there is a shot that helps to give that feeling that the dark stairs that go down are infinite. ..
Pero si hablamos de buena fotografía y manejo del terror tengo que mostrarles mi escena preferida de la película, la escena en la funeraria, y es que hay no solo un manejo del terror sutil que va escalando de intensidad sin verse vulgar (un sello de Wan) sino que además tiene planos y transiciones muy buenas como aquella donde el joven Henrry va bajando las escaleras y en la transición el pasado y presente coinciden con un Herry mayor contando el recuerdo, además cuando vuelve la escena al pasado y Henrry va a bajar las escaleras al sótano que realmente es el área de Tanatopraxia, hay un plano contra picado que enfatizan la atención sobre el protagonista de la escena, y luego hay un plano picado que ayuda a dar esa sensación de que las escaleras oscuras que bajan son infinitas...
What I like most about Wan is that he is very delicate and detailed when creating, every shot, every transition and every cinematographic aspect is extremely careful and they all converge in the same idea to be able to generate an immense terror with a subtle and not at all vulgar effort (avoiding jumpscares for example) achieving scenes that remain engraved in the mind and cause nightmares to many people, like the one I was talking about and that I will show you next:
Lo que más me gusta de Wan es que es muy delicado y detallista al crear cada plano, cada transición y cada aspecto cinematográfico esta sumamente cuidado y todos convergen en una misma idea para poder lograr generar un terror inmenso con un esfuerzo sutil y para nada vulgar (evitando jumpscares, por ejemplo) logrando escenas que se quedan grabadas en la mente y causan pesadillas a muchos, como de la que hablaba y que a continuación les mostraré:
The story is not the most polished (it lacks a bit of detail and explanation) but overall it is quite good, it even has an impressive twist and its ending is quite unexpected. As I said it's not a unique and masterful piece but it is quite good and highly recommended.
La historia no es la más pulida (le falta un poco de detalle y explicación) pero en líneas generales es bastante buena, incluso tiene un giro de tuerca impresionante y su final es bastante inesperado. Como dije, no es una pieza única y magistral pero sí es bastante buena y altamente recomendada.
