Corpse Bride, Review (ENG/SPA)
Hello, people of the Internet. Today I want to bring you a detailed analysis of this film (one of my favourites) I think that like Jack's Strange World, it is a Stop Motion masterpiece and therefore deserves a complete analysis.
Hola, gente de Internet. Hoy quiero traerles un análisis detallado de esta película (una de mis preferidas) creo que como El Extraño Mundo de Jack, es una obra de arte del Stop Motion y por tanto merece una análisis completo
Born out of a Russian-Jewish legend, the film tells the story of Victor, an introverted young man who is trapped in an arranged marriage. Nervous about that, he is unable to memorise his vows, he goes into the forest to try to practice, mistakenly betrothing the corpse of a woman to whom he is now engaged.
Nacido de una leyenda Rusa-Judía, el film nos narra la historia de Victor, un joven introvertido quien está atrapado en un matrimonio arreglado, nervioso por el hecho, él es incapaz de memorizar sus votos, por lo que va al bosque a intentar practicar, desposando por error al cadáver de una mujer con el que ahora está comprometido.
The direction and art is in the hands of Tim Burton and the stars are Helena Bomhan Carter and Johnny Deep (an excellent duo, I must say).
La dirección y arte está en las manos de Tim Burton y los protagonistas son Helena Bomhan Carter y Johnny Deep (un excelente dúo, debo decir)
There are so many good aspects of the film that I don't know where to start, it's so well made that elements from the story to the sountrack are so good and worth mentioning. But I think I'll start with the cinematography:
Hay tantos buenos aspectos en la película que no sé por cual empezar, está tan bien hecha que elementos desde la historia hasta el sountrack son buenísimos y dignos de mencionar. Pero creo que empezaré por la fotografía:
In this aspect we have many things to mention, starting with the shots, at the beginning of the film we have a shot that follows the sequence of the protagonist's hand, taking a pen and drawing (a clear reference to the beginning of Sleepy Hollow, or so it seems to me) also, as another interesting shot we have the appearance of Emily in the forest and her panning from bottom to top.
En este aspecto tenemos muchas cosas que mencionar, empezando por los planos, al inicio de la película tenemos un plano que sigue la secuencia de la mano del protagonista, tomando una pluma y dibujando (una clara referencia al inicio de Sleepy Hollow, o eso me parece a mí) además, como otro plano interesante tenemos la aparición de Emily en el bosque y su paneo de abajo hacia arriba.
The lighting is one of the best things in the film, for example, that scene in which Elily appears, the moonlight is very well achieved and in addition, the rays illuminate her from behind, giving her prominence, as well as helping with the atmosphere of terror that the film is already creating. In the musical "Remains of the Day" the changes of lights, the play between lights and shadows, the projections of shadows on the wall, German Expressionism style, and the clear reference to The Skeleton Dance (the famous Disney short), are amazing, and the music and the message of the song help a lot to deepen the character of Emily, one of the best parts of the film.
La iluminación es una de las mejores cosas de la película, por ejemplo, esa escena en la que Elily aparece, la luz de la luna está muy bien lograda y además, los rayos la iluminan desde atrás, dándole protagonismo, así como también ayuda con la ambientación de terror que ya viene creando la cinta. En el musical “La Historia de la Novia Muerta” los cambios de luces, los juegos entre luces y sombras, las proyecciones de sombras en la pared, estilo Expresionismo Alemán, y la clara referencia a The Skeleton Dance (el famoso corto de Disney), son asombrosos, además la música y el mensaje de la canción ayudan mucho a profundizar en el personaje de Emily, una de las mejores partes de la película
Another thing I must point out when talking about cinematography is the clear change in the colour palette between the world of the dead and the world of the living. I think everyone would think that in the world of the living there would be representative, warmer and "cheerful" colours, while the colour palette of the world of the dead would probably be dull, opaque and monochromatic, because in the universe that Burton created for this film the exact opposite is true:
Otra cosa que debo resaltar hablando de fotografía es el claro cambio en la paleta de colores entre el mundo de los muertos y el de los vivos. Creo que todos pensarían que en el mundo de los vivos habría colores representativos, más cálidos y “alegres” mientras que probablemente la paleta de colores del mundo de los muertos sea deslucida, opaca y monocromática, pues en el universo que creó Burton para esta película pasa exactamente lo contrario:
The world of the living is monochromatic and has a bluish filter at night and a greyish filter during the day (although this is also due to the natural colouring that London has because it is always cloudy) but this is the representation of a world where pain is felt, where social conveniences and pressures make the living dead in life, unhappy, while the dead no longer suffer pain, and as it is an ending that we all have for sure, it is more joyful and happy, as it takes us to a higher transcendence, therefore we must enjoy the stay. I thought it was an incredibly artistic and creative way for Burton to convey it in this way.
El mundo de los vivos es monocromático y tiene un filtro azulado de noche y grisáceo de día (aunque también se debe a la coloración natural que tiene Londres por ser nublado siempre) pero esta es la representación de un mundo donde se siente dolor, donde las conveniencias y presiones sociales hacen que los vivos estén muertos en vida, que sean infelices, mientras que los muertos ya no padecen dolor, y como es un final que todos tenemos seguro, es más alegre y feliz, pues nos lleva a una trascendencia superior, por tanto hay que disfrutar la estancia. Me pareció una manera increíblemente artística y creativa por parte de Burton transmitirlo de esta manera.
Talking about the story and the characters, I think that without a doubt the most complete character is Emily, at the beginning we see her as creepy, later on annoying, selfish and again creepy, later on we understand how she feels and we get her pain... she is a character capable of making you feel a roller coaster of emotions.
Hablando de la historia y los personajes, creo que sin lugar a dudas el personaje más completo es Emily, al principio la vemos como escalofriante, más adelante fastidiosa, egoísta y nuevamente escalofriante, posteriormente entendemos cómo se siente y nos llega su dolor… es un personaje capaz de hacerte sentir un sube y baja de emociones como si se tratara de una montaña rusa.
Emily is a soul in pain, therefore, like the others, she does not feel a physical pain, but an emotional one that kills her every day, and as she is dead it is something she must feel every day of her existence, eternally without rest (because she does not sleep either) she feels abandoned and alone for a love that was never for her, because it was never genuine from the other party and that besides that, it ended with her, that is why when she believes that Victor betrothed her, she clings to him, she is unable to see Victor's clear signs that he doesn't love her and that he wants to return to his true love, not until Victor, tactless and blunt, tired of being kidnapped by the dead bride and on the run, tells her clearly that he was engaged before, that she is the other woman and that he would never marry a corpse, which makes her "understand" (although deep down she knew it) that once again, she is relegated to being alone.
Emily es un alma en pena, por lo tanto, como los demás, no siente un dolor físico, pero sí uno emocional que la mata cada día, y como está muerta es algo que debe sentir cada día de su existencia, eternamente sin descanso (porque tampoco duerme) se siente abandonada y sola por un amor que nunca fue para ella, porque nunca fue genuino de la otra parte y que además de eso, acabó con ella, es por eso que cuando cree que Victor la desposó, se aferra a él, no es capaz de ver las claras señales de Victor de que no la quiere y de que quiere volver a su verdadero amor, no es hasta cuando Victor, sin tacto y tajante, ya cansado de estar secuestrado por la novia muerta y estar huyendo, le dice claramente que estaba comprometido antes, que ella es la otra mujer y que nunca se casaría con un cadáver, lo que le hace “comprender” (aunque en el fondo lo sabía) que una vez más, está relegada a estar sola.
Tears to Shed (musical) tells us (through the worm and spider who are Emily's friends) the value she really has and that, if Victor knew her better, he would probably feel something for her; in the other hand, she devalues herself by saying that she could not compete against Victoria (Victor's real fiancée) mainly because Victoria is alive and she is not, phrases such as "If I touch a burning candle I can feel no pain in the ice or in the sun it's all the same yet I feel my heart is aching Though it doesn't beat it's breaking and the pain here that I feel try and tell me it's not real I know that I am dead Yet it seems that I still have some tears to shed" make us realise the grief that Emily carries with her, seeing again how her soul mate slips from her hands in front of her and she can do nothing about it.
Una Lágrima que Dar (musical) nos narra (a través del gusano y araña que son amigos de Emily) el valor que realmente tiene y que, si Victor la conociera más, probablemente sentiría algo por ella, por su parte, ella se desvaloriza diciendo que no podría competir contra Victoria (la prometida real de Victor) principalmente porque Victoria está viva y ella no, frases como “Si me quemo con la vela no siento el dolor, en el hielo o el sol todo es igual, y mi corazón me duele, aunque no palpite siente, y el dolor que tengo aquí, anda y dime, no es real y yo muerta sé que estoy, pero aún tengo una lágrima que dar” nos hace dar cuenta del duelo que lleva Emily consigo, viendo nuevamente como se le escapa su alma gemela de las manos frente a ella y no puede hacer nada.
However, after some events, he closes his cycle and manages to transcend in a beautiful scene, I must say.
Sin embargo, tras algunos acontecimientos, cierra su ciclo y logra transcender en una escena preciosa debo decir
Victor is an introverted guy who does what others want, whether he likes it or not, simply because he doesn't want to confront anyone, and little by little he takes courage to stand up for both, Emily and Victoria, and learns to gain determination.
Victor por su parte es un chico introvertido que hace lo que los demás quieren, le guste o no, simplemente por no confrontar a nadie, y poco a poco va tomando valor hasta defender tanto a Emily como a Victoria y aprende a ganar determinación.
Victoria for her part, although a passive girl, gradually, like Victor, takes courage and stands up for her ideals, especially when she realises that she loves him and is being forced to marry a Lord instead when Victor does not show up.
Victoria por su parte, aunque es una muchacha pasiva, poco a poco, al igual que Victor, va tomando valor y defiende sus ideales, sobre todo cuando se da cuenta de que lo ama y está siendo obligada a casarse con un Lord en su lugar cuando Victor no aparece.
I must say that both, Victor and Victoria, are very similar characters and that precisely because of that, they are right for each other, is something that Emily realises later on, and seeing herself reflected in Victoria (who is witnessing how her true love will marry another) Emily decides to release Victor from the deal so as not to condemn them both to a tragic end like her own.
Debo decir que tanto Victor como Victoria son personajes muy parecidos y que precisamente por eso, son el uno para el otro, es algo de lo que Emily se da cuenta más adelante, y al verse reflejada en Victoria (la cual está siendo testigo de como su verdadero amor se casará con otra) Emily decide liberar a Victor del trato para no condenar a ambos a un final trágico como el suyo.
It is important to clarify that although the film is catalogued for children in some countries, the truth is that it is a juvenile production, children who are not impressionable will be able to see it and enjoy it, but as much as understanding its background, I doubt it very much, since this, as I have just explained, is quite deep and it is about overanalysing the story in order to dig deeper and deeper into the plot.
Es importante aclarar que aunque la película esté catalogada para niños en algunos países, la verdad diría que es una producción juvenil, los niños que no son impresionable podrán verla y disfrutarla, pero tanto como entender su trasfondo, lo dudo mucho, ya que este, como acabo de explicar, es bastante profundo y parte de sobre analizar la historia para poder ir escarbando y liberando más y más aportes que profundicen en la trama.
The sountrack of the film is magnificent, quite enjoyable. My favourite besides "Tears to Shed" is Victor's piano solo, which I think is a very beautiful and sublime composition.
El sountrack de la película es magnífico, bastante disfrutable. Mi preferida además de “una lágrima que dar” es el solo de piano de Victor, el cual me parece una composición bastante linda y sublime.
I could go on for hours talking about the attractions of the film but I don't have that much time haha, so I hope this is enough for your movie-loving curiosity.
La verdad podría extenderme por horas hablando de los atractivos de la película pero no dispongo de tanto tiempo haha, así que espero que esto sea suficiente para la curiosidad cinéfila de ustedes
