Unorthodox: a series that speaks of the freedom to choose

This time the review is about "Unorthodox", a miniseries based on the book by writer Deborah Feldman, which will take you on a walk through Jewish culture, one that has quite a few aspects in common with Christianity or Catholicism.

Personally, I loved the 4-episode miniseries, because it shows us so many ways to experience religion and also shares a point of view of someone who although religious, desires a different life, which is also valid.

En esta oportunidad la reseña es sobre “Poco Ortodoxa”, una miniserie basada en el libro de la escritora Deborah Feldman, que te llevará a pasear por la cultura judía, una que tiene bastantes aspectos en común con el cristianismo o catolicismo.

En lo personal, la miniserie de 4 episodios me encantó, porque nos muestra muchísimas maneras de experimentar la religión y también comparte un punto de vista de alguien que aunque religiosa, desea una vida diferente, lo cual también es válido.

Her life and mine have nothing to do and I grew up in Catholicism not in Judaism, but I understand very well the emotions very well interpreted by the actress.

Intentaré para esta reseña, ser lo más objetiva posible, aunque me cuesta, porque de alguna manera me siento identificada con la protagonista. Su vida y la mía no tienen nada que ver y yo crecí en el Catolicismo no en el Judaísmo, pero entiendo muy bien las emociones muy bien interpretadas por la actriz.

Plot

The miniseries is about an almost adult 19-year-old girl who lives in Brooklyn, United States, in a neighborhood where there are exclusively Jewish communities. Although there are currently practitioners of different currents and with different levels of practice of the religion, this place corresponds to orthodox practitioners, so all generations must respond to the mandate of the family and religion without any possibility of having a doubt or objecting to what must be done.

In this context, Esty must marry a boy, but she cannot choose him, her family arranges the marriage with his family, and since the girl has a very particular history (her father is extremely absent and her mother "abandoned" her as a child), she can't dare to complain about anything. Therefore, she gets married.

Soon after, the girl goes into a kind of depression from which she literally has to run away, and as she has some documentation given to her by her mother, she decides to go to Germany to try to create a life there.

At that moment many beautiful things begin to happen in her life, while the community from which she escapes, including her husband, is given the task of finding her in the huge city of Berlin.

Trama

La miniserie se trata de una casi adulta de 19 años que vive en Brooklyn, Estados Unidos, en un barrio donde hay exclusivamente comunidades judías. Aunque actualmente existen practicantes de diferentes corrientes y con diferente nivel de ejercicio de la religión, este lugar corresponde a practicantes ortodoxos, por lo que todas las generaciones deben responder al mandato de la familia y de la religión sin posibilidad alguna de tener una duda o de objetar lo que hay que realizar.

En este contexto, Esty, debe casarse con un chico, pero ella no puede elegirlo, sino que su familia arregla el matrimonio con la de él, y dado que la chica tiene una historia muy particular (su papá está pero extremadamente ausente y su mamá la “abandonó” de niña), menos que menos puede osar a quejarse de algo. Al poco tiempo la chica entra en una especie de depresión de la que literalmente debe salir huyendo, y como cuenta con una documentación que le entregó su madre, decide ir a Alemania a intentar crear una vida allí.

Values

There are many values that are worked on in this production and I am sure that each person will be able to see one or another depending on how they tune in to the story, but in general I could say that courage, persistence, trust, hope are addressed.

Esty is a girl who not only has to face an entire community, but also her own beliefs and the very structure she grew up in. Her mother in the end had been the only one capable of doing things differently and truly listening to her being, but Esty realizes this later.

Also something that is addressed, which is not exactly the "values" theme, is the importance of allowing yourself to know yourself and how different religions, communities, cult groups and so on, from an extreme point as is this case, with the intention of continuing tradition do not pause to observe if they really feel that, and even the hypocrisy that sometimes exists, even at these extreme points, is shown. In addition, the miniseries shares how religion can continue to be lived but from another place, a little freer and healthier.

It also addresses the importance of family, of understanding within the family and the important role that friends can play in someone's life.

Valores

Son muchos los valores que se trabajan en esta producción y estoy segura de que cada persona podrá ver uno u otro dependiendo de cómo sintonice con la historia, pero en general podría decir que se aborda el coraje, la persistencia, la confianza, la esperanza.

Esty es una chica que no solamente debe enfrentarse a toda una comunidad, sino que también se encuentra frente a sus propias creencias y a la propia estructura en la que creció. Su madre al final había sido la única capaz de hacer las cosas de una manera diferente y de escuchar verdaderamente a su ser, pero Esty se da cuenta de esto más tarde.

También algo que se trata, que no es precisamente el tema “valores”, es la importancia de permitirse conocerse y la manera en que diferentes religiones, comunidades, grupos de cultos y demás, desde un punto extremo como es este caso, con la intención de continuar con la tradición no hacen una pausa para observar si realmente sienten eso, e incluso se muestra la hipocresía que a veces existe, aún en estos puntos extremos. Además la miniserie comparte cómo se puede seguir viviendo la religión pero desde otro lugar, un poco más libre y saludable.

También se aborda la importancia de la familia, del entendimiento dentro de la misma y el importante rol que los amigos pueden jugar en la vida de alguien.

Opinion

Well, as you can imagine from what I have been telling you, I liked the miniseries a lot, although it was a little slow at times, but overall I was entertained.

There are 4 episodes that tell a very complex story, so each one of them is very rich, and they really show progress in Esty's life.

It is a highly recommended production if you like dramas that offer themes of existentialist nature to analyze, and also if you are in some process of change in your life, it is also a great option to watch and expand your mind and thoughts.

In this opportunity I will rate the series with ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5.

Bueno como pueden imaginar por lo que he ido comentándoles, la miniserie me gustó mucho, aunque por momentos se me hizo un poco lenta, pero en general estuve entretenida.

Son 4 episodios que narran una historia bastante compleja, por lo que cada uno de ellos es muy rico, y van mostrando realmente avances en la vida de Esty.

Es una producción muy recomendada si te gustan los dramas que ofrecen temas de naturaleza existencialista para analizar, y además si estás en algún proceso de cambio en tu vida, también es una gran opción para ver y expandir tu mente y pensamientos.

En esta oportunidad puntuaré a la serie con ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
