Review of "Pain Hustlers": the pharmaceutical industry from a more humane and empathetic side

Hello dear friends of Hive and Movies & TV Shows, it's a pleasure to be here again. Today I will be talking about a movie that is quite similar to the series Painkiller, but of course it is much shorter, because in about two hours we already have the beginning and the end of this story.

I don't know what happened with the pharmaceutical industry, the opioid crisis in the United States and the year 2023, but it seems that something has mobilized the audiovisual content producers and people's ideas, because in the same year we have two installments starring film exponents such as Matthew Broderick for Lethal Medicine and Emily Blunt for Pain Hustlers, another story based on true events.

Hola queridos amigos de Hive y de Movies & TV Shows, es un placer estar aquí otra vez. Hoy estaré hablando de una película que se asemeja bastante a la serie Medicina Letal, pero claro que es mucho más corta, pues en dos horas aproximadamente ya tenemos el inicio y el final de esta historia.

No sé qué habrá pasado con el tema de la industria farmacéutica, la crisis de lo opioides en Estados Unidos y el año 2023, pero parece que algo ha movilizado a las productoras de contenido audiovisual y a las ideas de la gente, pues en un mismo año tenemos dos entregas protagonizadas por exponentes del cine como es Matthew Broderick para Medicina Letal y Emily Blunt para El Negoció del Dolor, otra historia basada en hechos reales.

And what does this story bring us again?

Well, this is another perspective quite different from that of Lethal Medicine. In that production, we saw three actors stepping very strongly: the pharmaceutical industry, the law (the good and fair side of the coin) and a particular case of a patient with some approaches to other cases.

In the Business of Pain we see from the inside two employees in particular, who work for a company that sells a drug.

This allows us to observe how this business and the industry itself, touches millions of stories, and we could dare to think of thousands of ideas for television and film productions from the different lenses from which this situation could be approached.

¿Y qué nos trae esta historia de nuevo?

Bueno, esta es otra perspectiva bastante diferente a la de Medicina Letal. En aquella producción veíamos a tres actores pisando muy fuerte: la industria farmacéutica, la ley (la cara buena y justa de la moneda) y un caso particular de un paciente con algunos acercamientos a otros casos.

En el Negocio del Dolor vemos desde dentro a dos empleados en particular, que trabajan para una empresa que vende un medicamento.

Esto nos permite observar cómo este negocio y la industria misma, toca millones de historias, y podríamos atrevernos a pensar en miles de ideas de producciones televisivas y cinematográficas desde los diferentes cristales desde donde esta situación podría ser abordada.

Plot

In this production we see a woman who is doing what she can to raise her daughter. Her job is not the best, as she introduces herself as Liza, the main character, dances in a cabaret; she soon lets the viewers know that this is not what she wants to do, but she has no choice.

One day at work she meets a man who happens to give her his contact card, so Liza chooses to go with her best face to look for work. It turns out that she arrives at a company that is unsuccessfully marketing fentalin drugs, a drug (an opioid) that relieved severe pain quickly and effectively.

Since Liza starts working at this company, she is given 5 days to prove that she will be useful as an employee, and just on the last day, already resigned to not having found a doctor to prescribe the company's drugs, her luck turns around, and she gets the prescriptions and the resulting sales.

Of course, these sales begin to be distorted and a kind of chain ambition begins to be generated, where everyone wants to earn more money, and as the drug is addictive, it begins to be prescribed more, so much so, that even a suspicion of a serious illness becomes a reason to prescribe it.

As Liza works on commission (like everyone else in the field in question), her life begins to turn around unexpectedly and almost immediately, and so she manages to position her life, stop being a social outcast, and also manages to give her daughter a better life.

The point is that Liza, from the top of the mountain and looking at her fall and that of the company, realizes that everything she has achieved materially, does not fill anything inside her, because in the end, far from contributing to society, she is participating in its destruction.

Trama

En esta producción vemos a una mujer que está haciendo lo que puede para criar a su hija. Su trabajo no es el mejor, ya que se presenta como Liza, la protagonista, baila en un cabaret; pronto deja saber a los espectadores que no es eso a lo que desea dedicarse, pero no le queda otra.

Un día de trabajo conoce a un hombre que por casualidad le da su tarjeta de contacto, así que Liza elige ir con su mejor cara a buscar trabajo. Resulta que llega a una empresa que está comercializando sin éxito medicamentos con fentalino, una droga (un opioide) que calmaba el dolor severo rápida y efectivamente.

Desde que Liza empieza a trabajar en esta empresa, le dan 5 días para que pruebe que será útil como empleada, y justo el último día, ya resignada por no haber encontrado un médico que recetara los medicamentos de la empresa, su suerte da un giro, y consigue las recetas y las consecuentes ventas.

Claro que estas ventas empiezan a desvirtuarse y se empieza a generar una especie de ambición en cadena, en donde todos quieren ganar más dinero, y como la droga es adictiva, empieza a recetarse más, tanto, que hasta una sospecha de alguna enfermedad grave pasa a ser motivo de receta de esto.

Como Liza trabaja por comisión (como todos en el campo en cuestión), su vida empieza a dar un giro de manera inesperada y casi inmediata, y así logra posicionar su vida, dejar de ser una relegada en la sociedad, y además consigue darle a su hija una mejor vida.

El tema es que Liza, desde la cúspide de la montaña y avizorando su caída y la de la empresa, se da cuenta que todo lo que ha alcanzado materialmente, no llena nada en su interior, pues al final, lejos de contribuir a la sociedad, está siendo partícipe de su destrucción.

Opinion

I quite liked the movie. It's catching and favors critical thinking. While Painkiller as a series led us to make a more economic and legal analysis, with clear samples of what this sector produced in life, Pain Hustlers shows us a specific case of a worker in this sector, and of course when we talk about this story, there is an introduction of how other employees on par with Liza, are living the growth and expansion of the company. Are they all happy? Are some scared? How do they handle ambition? Do they wonder about the consequences they are causing in people who consume these drugs? You will be able to answer these questions by watching the film.

Liza, for her part, comes to question what she is doing. It's like she suddenly understands, and this is what I like about the film. That they show a more human side of the pharmaceutical industry.

Among all its links we can see that there are different big players, and within them there are people with a story. Some will have entered because of a need, others because of ambition, and so, for different motivations, this empire of global reach and often catastrophic (and silent) consequences has been created. But there is critical thinking inside.

Opinión

Me gustó bastante la película. Es atrapante y favorece al pensamiento crítico. Mientras Medicina Letal como serie nos llevaba a hacer un análisis más desde lo ecconómico y legal, con muestras claras de lo que este sector producía en las vidad, El Negocio del Poder nos muestra un caso puntual de un trabajador dentro de este sector, y claro que al hablarnos de esta historia, hay una introducción de cómo otros empleados a la par de Liza, están viviendo el crecimiento y expansión de la empresa. ¿Todos están felices? ¿Hay algunos asustados? ¿Cómo manejan la ambición? ¿Se preguntan en las consecuencias que están provocando en las personas que consumen esos medicamentos? Podrás responder a estar preguntar viendo el film.

Liza por su parte, llega a cuestionarse sobre lo que está haciendo. Es como que de pronto comprende, y esto es lo que me gusta de la película. Que muestran un lado más humano de la insdustria farmacéutica.

Entre todos sus eslabones podemos ver que hay diferentes grandes actores, y dentro de ellos hay personas con una historia. Algunos habrán ingresado por una necesidad, otros por ambición, y así, por diferentes motivaciones, se ha creado este imperio de alcance mundial y muchas veces de consecuencias catastróficas (y silenciosas). Pero hay un pensamiento crítico dentro.

Message

Within the opinion, this time I will make a special mention to the message of the story, and that is that it highlights something that I have rarely seen in productions (and I have seen several). And that is the recognition of the mistake. In this sense it reminded me of the movie The Flight, when Denzel Washington (I don't remember the name of the character), at the end recognizes his alcoholism and his lack of responsibility.

Something like this happens with Liza (Emily Blunt), who in an attempt to save herself too, we will not deny this part, ends up making a sincere awareness by recognizing first for herself and for some of her colleagues and then publicly, the damage she was causing with the sale of those drugs.

Very good movie. I highly recommend it, and if you like the subject but don't feel like watching a series, dedicating two hours to a story that addresses the problem seems quite viable.

Dentro de la opinión, esta vez haré una mención especial al mensaje de la historia, y es que se destaca algo que pocas veces he visto en las producciones (y he visto varias). Y es el reconocimiento del error. En este sentido me hizo acordar a la película El Vuelo, cuando Denzel Washington (no recuerdo el nombre del personaje), al final reconoce su alcoholismo y su falta de responsabilidad.

Algo así pasa con Liza (Emily Blunt), que en un intento de salvarse también, no vamos a negar esta parte, termina por hacer una toma de conciencia sincera al reconocer primero para ella misma y para algunos de sus colegas y luego públicamente, el daño que estaba causando con la venta de esos medicamentos.

Muy buena película. La recomiendo bastante, y si el tema te gusta pero no tenés ganas de ver una serie, dedicar dos horas a una historia que aborde la problemática, parece bastante viable.
