Gaslight, a film that more than half a century ago, warns about Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

This is Gaslight, a 1940 film directed by Thorold Dickinson, which tells us about a troubled marriage, where the wife begins to lose her sanity because of her husband.

Of course, to analyze a film of that time, we have to understand that we are not dealing with a recreation of the past, as could happen with a production made in the present and based on a bygone era, but we are dealing with a story truly centered in 1940, a time when the figure of the woman was basically an oil painting, as a colleague would say. That is to say, at that time women had no voice or vote in the family and the mistreatment (physical or psychological) towards us within the couple's relationship was almost commonplace.

Hola mis queridos hivers de Movies & TV Shows, espero que estén teniendo un día espectacular. En esta oportunidad les vengo a traer una película de hace tantos años, que incluso está en blanco y negro. Se trata de Luz de Gas, una película de 1940 dirigida por Thorold Dickinson, que viene a hablarnos de un matrimonio conflictivo, en donde la mujer empieza a perder la cordura a causa de su marido.

Claro que para analizar una película de aquella época, tenemos que comprender que no estamos ante una recreación del pasado, como podría ocurrir con una producción realizada en la actualidad y basada en una época pasada, sino que estamos ante una historia verdaderamente centrada en 1940, momento en el cual la figura de la mujer era básicamente una pintura al óleo, como diría una colega. Es decir, en aquel momento la mujer no tenía ni voz ni voto en la familia y el maltrato (físico o psicológico) hacia nosotras dentro de la relación de pareja, era casi que cuenta corriente.

Lo curioso de esta película, es que se ha tomado en el presente, para poder explicar una técnica de manipulación que ocurre por parte de psicópatas integrados y perversos narcisistas para con sus presas, llamada “luz de gas”. Como no soy profesional de la salud mental, no me sumergiré en este tema, pero les comento que en internet hay información muy útil e interesante por si a alguien le sirve. La técnica de manipulación se llama así justamente en referencia a esta película. Y claro que aunque verán a un hombre haciéndoselo a su pareja mujer, actualmente esto se da en cualquier género y ámbito (puede ocurrir en la pareja, familia, grupo de amigos, trabajo).

Plot

The story tells of a married couple who move into a house where a murder had been committed years before (the wife ignores this information). Her husband seems adorable, but at times he treats her really badly. In this way it is clearly seen how this man offers his affection to the woman and then, for meaningless excuses, withdraws it, and in return, offers her a very marked mistreatment. In other words, the man's wife lives exposed to a permanent contrast of emotions generated by her husband.

To this is added that this man begins to hide objects, and as at that time the light bulbs were gas lamps, the fact that this man went through the different rooms hiding things or making some noise to disconcert his wife, caused the lights in the rest of the house to diminish their intensity. When the wife explained what she had seen, her husband made her out to be crazy, and said that she had dreams in which she did not know what she was doing. She talks about this to the two girls who are in charge of the cleaning, so they also think that the woman is not in her right mind.

Trama

La historia nos habla de un matrimonio que se muda a una vivienda en donde años atrás se había cometido un asesinato (la mujer ignora esta información). Su marido parece adorable, pero por momentos la trata realmente mal. De esta manera se observa claramente cómo este hombre le ofrece su cariño a la mujer y luego, por excusas sin sentido, se lo retira, y a cambio, le ofrece un maltrato muy marcado. Es decir que la esposa del hombre, vive expuesta a un contraste de emociones permanentes generadas por su marido.

A ello se le suma que este señor, empieza a esconder objetos, y como en aquel momento las lámparas de luz eran a gas, el hecho de que este señor transitara por las diferentes habitaciones escondiendo cosas o haciendo algún ruido para desconcertar a su esposa, hacía que las luces del resto de la vivienda, disminuyeran su intensidad. Cuando la mujer explicaba lo que había visto, su marido la hacía pasar por loca, y decía que tenía sueños en los que ella no sabía lo que realizaba. De esto, les habla a las dos chicas que se encargan de la limpieza, por lo que ellas también piensan que la mujer no está en sus cabales.

Claro que el hombre la empieza a engañar también, pero no solamente se trata de esto la historia, sino que él buscaba unos diamantes en esa casa, eso era todo lo que le interesaba.

Afortunadamente la policiía empieza a atar cabos y a investigar quién es este hombre, qué hace allí y cuál es su verdadera identidad.

Opinion

The movie is in black and white and the resolution and sound are awful, so I thought I was going to tolerate it, hehe. Sorry to be so blunt, but I had a hard time adjusting to the production being used to 2023 footage. However, the film is exquisite.

On the one hand it has its story of a crime, on the other hand there is a very clear presentation of a psychological pathology and if you have read or lived some of this, you will understand it very quickly, that I think is invaluable of this production.

On the other hand, I enjoyed watching the film in black and white and really observing how movies used to be made. I think it's the oldest film I've seen, along with Psychosis, and it got me. I suddenly realized that at first I was thinking about what color such and such would be, and then I had completely forgotten about it.

Opinión

La película está en blanco y negro y la resolución y el sonido son espantosos, por eso pensé que lo iba a tolerarla, jeje. Perdón por ser tan directa, pero me costó adaptarme a la producción estando acostumbrada a las imágenes del 2023. Sin embargo, es exquisito el film.

Por un lado tiene su historia de un delito, por otro lado hay una presentacion muy clara de una patología psicológica y si has leído o vivido algo de esto, lo entenderás muy rápidamente, eso creo que es invaluable de esta producción.

Por otro lado, me temrinó gustando ver la película en blanco y negro y realmente observar cómo se hacían antes las películas. Creo que es la película más vieja que he visto, junto con Psicosis, y me atrapó. De pronto me d cuenta que al principio pensaba de qué color sería tal o cual cosa, y luego me había olvidado por completo de eso.

I found a certain message not very optimistic but I think real, and that is that while technology has advanced by leaps and bounds, the values that make humanity, have not followed such evolution, because although women have a little more place and respect, in general humanity at times seems to regress in terms of kindness, honesty, altruism and empathy.

Creo que está para verla, es entretenida, intensa, intrigante, y nos hace viajar en el tiempo por un momento, mientras que de manera simultánea nos viene a decir: “esto sigue pasando”, las estafas, el abuso emocional y demás.

Encontré cierto mensaje no muy optimista pero creo que real, y es que mientras la tecnología ha avanzado a pasos agigantados, los valores que hacen a la humanidad, no han seguido tal evolución, porque aunque la mujer tiene un poco más de lugar y respeto, en general la humanidad por momentos pareciera retroceder en lo que respecta a bondad, honestidad, altruismo y empatía.
