7 Women and a Mystery: A Bittersweet Christmas Comedy | My Christmas Contest Entry

Hello dear friends of Movies & TV Shows, today I come to participate in the Christmas Contest with a review of an Italian movie contextualized in these dates that I saw two months ago or so.

This Italian movie is, from my point of view, a great comedy. Although I have read quite a few references about this production and it has not turned out to be too acclaimed by the critics, I have a very different point of view and that is that it made me laugh too much.

I think it has a very clear touch of Italian traditions and that's exactly what made me laugh, because that's what I experienced growing up, and my grandmother was very similar to many of the characters in the movie.

7 Mujeres y un Misterio: una comedia agridulce de Navidad | Mi entrada para el Concurso de Navidad

Hola queridos amigos de Movies & TV Shows, hoy vengo a participar del Concurso de Navidad con una reseña a una película italiana contextualizada en estas fechas que vi hace dos meses más o menos.

Esta película italiana es, desde mi punto de vista, una gran comedia. Aunque he leído bastantes referencias sobre esta producción y no ha resultado ser demasiado aclamada por las críticas, yo tengo un punto de vista muy diferente y es que me hizo reír demasiado.

Creo que tiene un toque muy claro de las tradiciones italianas y justamente lo que me causaba gracia, era eso, porque es lo que viví mientras crecía, y mi abuela era muy parecida a muchos personajes de la película.

In case someone has no notion of the traditions of this country or the characteristics of its inhabitants, it is somewhat complicated to really enjoy the production, because, I would not say that the reference to the customs is exaggerated, but it is very faithful.

It is a comedy but with black humor. Its permanent bittersweet tone is what stands out the most in this production. It is something quite interesting, especially at Christmas, a date that is all about love and peace, but that can easily generate conflicting situations among the different members of the families. In fact, there are many people who go to Christmas dinner with an impressive regret, hehe.

Interestingly, it is based on the book 8 women written by François Ozon and published in 1958.

En caso de que alguien no tenga noción de las tradiciones de este país o de las características de sus habitantes, es un tanto complicado que realmente disfrute la producción, porque, no diría que es exagerada la referencia a las costumbres, pero sí es muy fiel.

Es una comedia pero con humor negro. Su tono agridulce permanente es lo que más se destaca en esta producción. Es algo bastante interesante, sobre todo en la Navidad, una fecha que es amor y paz, pero que puede tranquilamente generar situaciones encontradas entre los diferentes integrantes de las familias. De hecho, hay muchas personas que van a la cena de Navidad con un pesar impresionante, jeje.

Algo interesante, es que está basada en el libro 8 mujeres escrita por François Ozon y publicada en 1958.

Plot

It turns out that a family gathers for this date, but the father turns up dead before the celebration can begin. Apparently this man has been murdered, but none of the women in the family have any idea what has happened.

The whole story is about discovering which of the women had been the murderer or the culprit of that event, since there was no other possibility outside that group of people.

As they try to uncover the truth, there are a series of discussions that turn out to be very funny, and many secrets begin to come to light as the film unfolds.

The story focuses purely on the family bond, as they are all in some way the protagonists, and what prevails is precisely this common thread between these women, apparently loving because they are family, but evidently unhealthy because of the same bickering that begins to emerge within the family ties.

Trama

Resulta que una familia se reúne para esta fecha, pero el padre aparece muerto antes de poder dar inicio al festejo. Aparentemente este hombre ha sido asesinado, pero ninguna de las mujeres de la familia tiene idea de qué ha ocurrido.

Toda la historia se trata de descubrir cuál de las mujeres había sido la asesina o la culpable de aquel acontecimiento, pues no había otra posibilidad fuera de aquel grupo de personas.

Mientras intentan sacar a la luz la verdad, hay una serie de discusiones que resultan ser muy graciosas, y además, muchos secretos empiezan a quedar en evidencia mientras transcurre la película.

La historia tiene el foco en el vínculo familiar puramente, pues todas son de alguna manera las protagonistas, y lo que prima es justamente este hilo conductor entre estas mujeres, aparentemente amoroso porque son familia, pero evidentemente enfermizo por las mismas pujas que empiezan a surgir dentro de los lazos familiares.

Opinion

The women's characters are not very clear and deep in terms of their personalities, but the roles are well established. For example, the mistress, the most sincere daughter, the wife, the mother-in-law. Each of them and the other women play an important role in the life of the deceased, but at the same time they could have motives to murder him.

What I found boring about the production is that it takes place in the same place, that is, in the house of the core family. This characteristic takes away dynamism and makes it a bit monotonous, leaving as more striking what I mentioned at the beginning of this post, and that is the allusion to Italian customs and temperaments.

Besides, being a black comedy, it lacks depth, it is not that it talks about something really forceful for life and I would not say that it leaves "nothing" (we can always extract a teaching), but the content is quite empty.

Opinión

Los personajes de las mujeres no son muy claros y profundos en cuanto a su personalidad, pero los roles quedan bien establecidos. Por ejemplo la amante, la hija más sincera, la esposa, la suegra. Cada una de ellas y de las otras mujeres, cumple un rol importante en la vida del difunto, pero al mismo tiempo podrían tener motivos para asesinarlo.

Lo que me pareció aburrido de la producción es que transcurre en un mismo lugar, es decir, en la casa de la familia núcleo. Esta característica le quita dinamismo y la hace un poco monótona, dejando como más llamativo lo que mencioné al principio de este post, y es la alusión a las costumbres y temperamentos italianos.

Además, al ser una comedia negra, carece de profundidad, no es que se hable de algo realmente contundente para la vida y no diría que no deja “nada” (siempre podemos extraer una enseñanza), pero el contenido es bastante vacío.

However, it is a good production to share with the family, to have fun, to laugh, and especially if there is some knowledge about Italian families, it can become a source of great enjoyment for those who watch it.

Sin embargo, es una buena producción para compartir en familia, para divertirse, para reír, y en especial si hay algo de conocimiento sobre las familias italianas, sí que puede convertirse en un motivo de bastante disfrute para quienes la vean.
