Knives out

A couple of days ago, I watched and reviewed the Glass Onion. It is the second of the Knives Out movies and I enjoyed it so I said I'd be watching the first one, Knives Out. I have watched this one before years ago, but for some reason, I didn't remember anything about it anymore (which is a big surprise to me after watching it for the second time). Let's get into this masterpiece.

PLOT

Harlan Thrombey is a rich and successful author who is in his latter years. He has a big family with lots of kids and grandkids who seem to be doing well for themselves. But when he mysteriously commits suicide on the night of his 85th birthday, just after severing some cords with some members of his family things start to seem suspicious. To make matters worse, just when the police are about to rule it a suicide and stop looking into the case, someone invites Detective Benoit Blanc anonymously raising further suspicion. Which of Harlan Thrombey's offspring are capable of murder? Or could it be one of the helpers? You're in for a wild ride.

MY THOUGHTS

It is safe to say mystery is one of my best genres, and whodunnit movies like this have a way of tickling that spot. The suspense, the anticipation, the buildup, and then the big reveal that leaves everyone shocked. Especially those who thought they knew how it would end. It is always a pleasant feeling, and this one was no different. I found myself wondering who was capable of doing it, especially because a lot of them (if not all) had a motive.

One of the problems movies with a lot of suspense have is that they are constantly chasing the wow factor and trying to do some things the audience will not expect over and over till they eventually ruin the plot, but with this, they kept it relatively simple, and it was easy to follow along right until the big twist where you finally see what has been going on all along.

As I said, I watched it a long time ago and couldn't remember anything, so this didn't affect my enjoyment of the film, at least at the start. However, as I approached the end, some of my memories started coming back, and I figured out who the culprit was ahead of time. The buildup was still refreshing, and I still enjoyed it. If you've not watched it before, I really doubt you'd be able to predict the end of this one.

The cinematics are notch, the acting amazing, typical stuff you'd expect from such a grade of movies. Benoit Blanc was still my favourite character in this one. Man is just a really good detective and a great character.

I'd rate this one above the glass onion. It was definitely more enjoyable, and though the glass onion retained some of the good stuff this one is clear. I'd give a whooping 9/10.

Okay I think you got me locked in on this. I'm intrigued by movies with a lot of suspense and this certain movie wasn't an exception. Just as you said, mystery movies have a whole lot to offer. The suspense being the first, is what I'm sole interested in. Thanks for the idea.

Knives Out was a good movie, I first watched it because of the strong cast and Ana de Armas didn't hurt either. I enjoyed it! Glass Onion I didn't even finish I'm sad to say, just too predictable. Great post!
