MOVIE REVIEW 📽️📽️📽️📽️📽️//// All of us strangers.
¿Qué les dirías a tus padres si ellos tuviesen la misma edad que tienes ahora? Ese es uno de los temas que aborda una de las mejores películas del año pasado, All of us strangers. Una película de realismo mágico en el que los temas del pasado, el sufrimiento, el perdón, el amor y la depresión convergen en una historia que se siente tan real como de ensueño gracias a la dirección tan melancólica y el montaje tan sensual que por momentos te hará sentir tan enamorado cómo sus protagonistas, y por otros, te hará sentirte tan triste cómo desgarrado con un drama que baila entre un segundo y un primer plano a la perfección.
All of us strangers es la adaptación de la novela “strangers” del escritor Taichi Yamada. Para eso, el director Andrew Hiegh transporta sus protagonistas al Londres contemporáneo y cuenta la historia de Adam, un joven melancólico que al conocer a su vecino Harry, empieza a visitar la casa de sus padres para volver a conectar con ellos. Todo bien hasta ahí, siendo una película de amor queer que se ve más que todo, bonita, pero sin esperar mucho empieza el realismo mágico al darnos cuenta de que los padres de Adam murieron hace 30 años y Adam, que los puede ver y hablar con ellos, conecta con sus versiones de cuando murieron, siendo ellos incluso más jóvenes que Adam.
Con estas cartas sobre la mesa, la película (que es corta) se toma su tiempo para mostrarnos el día a día de Adam desde su completa perspectiva, lo cual es un acierto a ojos cerrados ya que realmente no sabemos si todo lo que está pasando es real o es una idea que tiene Adam para luchar con la muerte de sus padres y las conversaciones que nunca tuvieron. Declararse como homosexual, preguntarles a sus padres porque no lo apoyaron más en su infancia y viceversa, porque Adam de niño no sintió la confianza suficiente para contarles todos los problemas a sus padres y demás.
Darse cuenta de que tus padres también están viviendo por primera vez la experiencia de criarte y que por lo mismo se equivocan, al igual que nosotros, es algo que me tenía pensando durante toda la película. El hecho de que necesitamos un abrazo, pero ellos también, y que realmente no sabemos cuándo ya no podrá ser, cuándo, ese contacto, por mínimo que sea, ya no existirá. ¿Hay algo que crees que debas decirle a tus seres queridos? ¿Algo para desahogarte, o para que ellos se desahoguen? ¿Hay acaso una acción, un regalo o un gesto que estés dando por sentado y esperes el momento perfecto para hacer lo que piensas? Aprovechar el momento no es tan fácil mientras se está viviendo, pero es lo mejor que puedes aprender.
Por otro lado, la hermosa relación casi perfecta que sea crea entre Adam y Harry, siendo dos actores increíbles dando de sus mejores interpretaciones, es tan placentera de ver cómo sensitiva. A pesar de que no sabemos mucho de Harry, la película no abunda en esto y nos tira de lleno en una relación que ningún momento tiene problemas sino más que todo momentos tanto de cariño como sexuales, que hacen que la película además de ser un estudio de personaje increíble, también es una historia de amor linda de ver que, posiblemente, te saque una lagrima por una razón o por la otra.
What would you tell your parents if they were the same age you are now? That is one of the themes addressed by one of the best films of last year, All of us strangers. A film of magical realism in which the themes of the past, suffering, forgiveness, love and depression converge in a story that feels both real and dreamy thanks to the melancholic direction and sensual editing that at times will make you feel as in love as its protagonists, and at others, will make you feel as sad as heartbroken with a drama that dances between a second and a close-up to perfection.
All of us strangers is the adaptation of the novel "strangers" by writer Taichi Yamada. For that, director Andrew Hiegh transports his protagonists to contemporary London and tells the story of Adam, a melancholic young man who, upon meeting his neighbor Harry, starts visiting his parents' house to reconnect with them. All well and good up to that point, being a queer love movie that looks mostly cute, but without expecting much the magical realism begins as we realize that Adam's parents died 30 years ago and Adam, who can see them and talk to them, connects with their versions of when they died, them being even younger than Adam.
With these cards on the table, the film (which is short) takes its time to show us Adam's day to day life from his complete perspective, which is a success in the eyes closed as we really don't know if everything that is going on is real or is an idea Adam has to struggle with the death of his parents and the conversations they never had. Coming out as gay, asking his parents why they didn't support him more in his childhood and vice versa because Adam as a child didn't feel confident enough to tell his parents all the problems and so on.
The realization that your parents are also going through the experience of raising you for the first time and that they are making mistakes, just like us, is something that had me thinking throughout the film. The fact that we need a hug, but so do they, and that we really don't know when it can't be, when that contact, however minimal, will no longer exist. Is there something you think you should say to your loved ones? Something to get off your chest, or for them to get off their chest? Is there an action, a gift or a gesture that you are taking for granted and waiting for the perfect moment to do what you think? Seizing the moment is not so easy while you are living, but it is the best thing you can learn.
On the other hand, the beautiful and almost perfect relationship that is created between Adam and Harry, being two incredible actors giving their best performances, is as pleasant to watch as it is sensitive. Even though we don't know much about Harry, the film doesn't dwell on this and throws us right into a relationship that has no problems at all but mostly moments of both affection and sex, making the film not only an incredible character study, but also a beautiful love story to watch that will possibly bring a tear to your eye for one reason or the other.
