A few years ago I watched for the first time the first season of True Detective. A series that really the first time I saw it I did not understand the incredible work I was watching, I was very small; so, recently I watched it again with my father and I realized that it is not only one of the best first seasons of a series but also a story of occultism as few times have been told in film and television. I've read that something like that is happening with Longlegs, but right now I'm not here to talk about Longlegs or True Detective, but about a movie that is a must-see for any fan of thrillers and suspense, serial killer movies and Asian films.
Cure is a Japanese film directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa and released in 1997, about a policeman who is investigating murders with no apparent motive but with an interesting connection: all the victims have an X on their body made by their killer. With no apparent relationship between the victims, the case gets more and more twisted in a film of less than two hours that knows how to perfectly tell a story full of suspense as only Japanese cinema knows how to do.
SPOILER FROM HERE: I always try to talk about movies without spoilers, but I feel that with Cure everything is a spoiler, because it is not a big drama or with plot twists like the American serial killer movies, but something more direct: the occult. This "science" that is shown in the film under hypnosis seems to me something interesting, something that made me wonder, how true is the power of hypnosis in people? A person can force you to kill another? How many killers have killed in the name of mythology?
The fact that Cure plays with the perception of the protagonist and at the same time with the viewer was mind-blowing to me, almost literally. While some films I've seen do that to turn the film into something completely different and take it to a terrain as unreal as strange (which I also like), Kurosawa in Cure does it only once or twice so we can understand the mind of the protagonist and how everything is so disturbing from the second half of the film, something that seems to me that only a great director could be able to do.
To tell the truth, I can partly say that I loved the movie because I really like the serial killer, cat and mouse and especially the occult, but I can't stop talking about this movie because for great moments Cure stops being a movie about killers and starts being a horror movie that genuinely gets to be disturbing despite its iconic slow pace. Because that's another thing I loved about Cure, that Kurosawa stops the camera in one shot and each of its sequences becomes a "short" horror film that builds tension with every minute, making it a stressful work to watch but one that you can't look away from.

Hace unos años vi por primera vez la primera temporada de True Detective. Una serie que realmente la primera vez que la vi no comprendí la increíble obra que estaba observando, era muy pequeño; por eso, hace poco volví a verla con mi padre y me di cuenta de que no es solo una de las mejores primeras temporadas de una serie sino también una historia de ocultismo como pocas veces se han contado en el cine y la televisión. He leído que algo así está pasando con Longlegs, pero justo ahora no vengo a hablar ni de Longlegs ni de True Detective, sino de una película que es imperdible para cualquier fan del thriller y del suspenso, de películas sobre asesinos seriales y películas asiáticas.
Cure es una película japonesa dirigida por Kiyoshi Kurosawa y estrenada en 1997, sobre un policía que está investigando asesinatos sin motivo aparente pero con una conexión interesante: todas las víctimas tienen una X en el cuerpo realizadas por su asesino. Sin una relación aparente entre las víctimas, el caso cada vez se revuelve más en una película de menos de dos horas que sabe contar a la perfección una historia llena de suspenso cómo solo el cine japonés lo sabe hacer.
SPOILER A PARTIR DE AQUÍ: y es que siempre trato de hablar de películas sin hacer mucho spoiler, pero siento que con Cure ya poco a poco todo es un spoiler, porque no es un drama grandísimo o con giros de guion cómo lo podrían tener las películas de asesinos seriales americanas, sino algo más directo: el ocultismo. Esta “ciencia” que en la película se muestra bajo la hipnosis me parece algo interesante, algo que me hizo preguntarme, ¿qué tan cierto es el poder de la hipnosis en las personas? ¿Una persona puede obligarte a matar a otra? ¿Cuántos asesinos han matado en nombre de la mitología?
El hecho de que Cure juegue con la percepción del protagonista y al mismo tiempo con el espectador me pareció alucinante, casi de forma literal. Mientras que algunas películas que he visto hacen eso para convertir la película en algo completamente diferente y llevarla a un terreno tan irreal cómo extraño (cosa que también me gusta), Kurosawa en Cure lo hace solo una o dos veces para que así podamos comprender la mente del protagonista y cómo todo es tan inquietante a partir de la segunda mitad de la película, algo que me parece que solo un gran director podría ser capaz de hacer.
La verdad, en parte puedo decir que la película me encantó porque me gusta mucho el tópico de asesino serial, gato y ratón y sobre todo el ocultismo, pero no puedo dejar de hablar de esta película porque por grandes momentos Cure deja de ser una película sobre asesinos y empieza a ser una película de horror que genuinamente llega a inquietar a pesar de su tan icónico pausado ritmo. Porque eso es otra cosa que me encantó de Cure, que Kurosawa para la cámara en un plano y cada una de sus secuencias se convierte en un “corto” de terror que aumenta la tensión con cada minuto siendo así un trabajo estresante de ver pero del que no puedes apartar la mirada
