The devil's bath (2024)

The devil's bath is an Austrian film based on a historian's thesis about life in the confessional states of Upper Austria in the second half of the 18th century.
The subject of this work is the cases of suicide in this region of Europe that are carried out through a proxy, which in English could be called as substitutes. In other words, an indirect suicide.
In fact, the film begins with a shocking scene in which a woman carries out this surrogate action. She then surrenders herself to the authorities of this rural town and is executed.
While the viewer recovers from this initial shock, the film begins to show different actions of daily life in a community of peasants living in a wooded area.

The protagonist Agnes (Anja Plaschg) marries Wolf (David Scheid). On the day of the celebration, the husband shows his wife a house he has bought for them to live in the forest, close to his family.
The house, for the possibilities of the time, seems quite spacious, but Agnes is not convinced.
This is the first sign of disagreement or conflict that is introduced in this couple. Then, the problem becomes another one. The way to make the marriage concrete is to have children.
However, Wolf is not willing to maintain the necessary relationships to achieve this goal. In addition, the boy's mother Ganglin (Maria Hofstätter) interferes in the couple's life and complicates her daughter-in-law's life on a daily basis.
Meanwhile, the film depicts with great skill and visual beauty the life of this community. Everyone fishes in a nearby river. In addition, the women wash clothes in a stream. When necessary, agricultural work is done.
All of this is shown realistically, but also with a certain artistic flair. In fact, there are some shots that are pictorial.
Behind this peasant life are the small marks of power, which is never fully revealed. The woman executed at the beginning is shown on a kind of altar so that the message endures while the flesh decomposes.
Her slaughtered head is placed in a cage next to the body. It is an image that works as a synthesis of what the film proposes: heads inside cages.
For this and other reasons, such as the atmosphere created to narrate, the film is inscribed in the horror genre. However, Des teufels bad is much more than a horror film.
