Goyo (2024)

Goyo is an Argentinian film directed by Marcos Carnevale, and is a person with Asperger's who is brought to life by Nicolás Furtado.

He is a guide at the Museum of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires and, as a fan of Van Gogh, he is a great connoisseur of the arts, as we already know that people with Asperger's can be true geniuses when they are interested in a particular subject.

In this case, the characteristic traits are extreme organisation and routine, as well as possessing great intelligence and difficulties in socialising and understanding double meanings or jokes.

Perhaps he is a very marked and stereotyped character, but everything will change when he meets his love (Nancy Dupláa), in the face of the scepticism of his sister (Soledad Villamil) and the support of his brother (Pablo Rago).

On the other hand, although it is a story that has already been told before, it is new in some aspects, as in that not only the handicap is in person with autism vs. person without autism, but in educated person vs. uneducated person and in the great difference in age between them, so that a priori the approach between these two characters is shocking and you want to see how they approach each other and how they overcome the obstacles.

They both do it very well. Nicolás Furtado is believable (although I can't give him his due since I don't know anything about the autistic spectrum).

The comic moments are delightful. The conversation about sex that Goyo has with his brother in the bar is ten out of ten. Both Pablo Rago and Soledad Villamil embroider their respective roles, with Rago being perhaps more successful than Villamil.

Goyo is a nice, endearing film with a lot of heart, a romantic, singular and very moving story. The story is simple, but very well developed, the central conflict offers us another way of seeing and understanding adults with Asperger's Syndrome.

The art direction is exquisite, from the paintings, Goyo's house which looks splendid, hairstyles and costumes, especially Goyo's sister who is shown to be more elegant, justly being a character of public importance.

The camerawork is also very correct, highlighting the expressions of the main character, trying to show his every reaction with very detailed main shots, which helps to better understand his condition.

The music is a point that occupies a small place in the film, which is very correct and transports Goyo to a better place.

Ahhhh now I have to see this. I’ve been on the mild end of the Autism spectrum but it’s always good to see that people don’t shy say from including these things in movies anymore
